the plot of this movie:
- the spice girls ride around in a bus and do spice girl stuff before they have a major concert
- some producers want to make a movie about the spice girls and one of their movie ideas includes mel b committing acts of terrorism
- the spice girls get canceled
- the spice girls get hit on by aliens in the woods
- alan cumming follows the spice girls around with a video crew so he can make a documentary about them but the spice girls are seemingly unaware this is happening
- the spice girls are almost responsible for the drowning of two children
- the spice girls take dance lessons and then go to military boot camp
- the spice girls break up but also not really
- the spice girls go to the club
- the spice girls have a pregnant friend who goes into labor at the club and then they have to drive her to the hospital in their double decker tour bus with a huge union jack flag on the side
- the spice girls get stopped by the police for “flying a bus without a license” and “scaring the pigeons”
- there is maybe also a bomb involved?
- the spice girls do their concert
the godfather trilogy is simply not this consistent

]]>the brutalist inverts the american dream — talent can not win you success, success can not win you happiness. lászló and ezrsébet have lost everything to war and persecution and are forced to reinvent themselves completely. they have to constantly prove themselves to the WASPy social circle they have found themselves in. to them, lászló is talented but wasting his potential and his stark differences from the american ideal (opposed to his much more assimilated and catholic convert cousin or the van buren’s jewish lawyer) makes him an easy target of subjection, while ezrsébet has to lower herself to a job she is well overqualified for. their acceptance into a higher society is merely a ruse, one that is (appropriately) brutally deconstructed over the film’s second half.
then comes the film’s relationship with zionism. which i would be remiss not to acknowledge. as its something that, even after giving this some thought, i feel conflicted about. lászló’s first endeavors into the world of american business are narrated by a radio announcement declaring israel officially a nation for the jewish people to forge their own path, a direct contrast to lászló, a hungarian-jew now forging his own way in the united states. later in the film, zsófia (lászló’s niece) announces that she’s moving to israel, encouraging lászló and ezrsébet to join her and her husband there, as is essentially their obligation. this causes tension, as lászló and ezrsébet feel that their jewishness is not tied to israel. in the last act of the film, the couple reach a breaking point with life in america, vowing to move to jerusalem — though it seems of note that in the epilogue it’s made clear lászló continues his architecture work in america.
the epilogue brings gives these moments some clarity, lászló’s architecture work is riddled with references to his time during the holocaust, including the project we see being made for the majority of the film’s runtime. though lászló is no longer able to speak and voice his own experiences, zsófia (a now proud israeli citizen) muses publicly about her uncle’s work — effectively co-opting his story. and while it’s my belief that this film’s messaging is that the idea that zionism is the antithesis to antisemitism is a myth, it doesn’t necessarily do much to dispel this idea — rather, it relies on the viewers own understanding and context of the situation to draw this conclusion. and it’s presented in such a way to show how and why this line of propaganda can be effective.
i can appreciate this on one hand. on the other, it’s not going to surprise me in the least if this film is extremely divisive — as i think its messaging could be very very easily interpreted in the complete opposite direction — that this is zionist drivel showing us exactly why israel must be the safe haven for the jewish people. and a part of me is saying “well, if your messaging could be so easily misinterpreted, is it even effective?” a part of me is wondering even if i’m completely wrong and it is the other way around. or is this just all part of the point?
still, despite my complicated feelings about it, i think it is one of the best movies of the year. it’s stunning, completely colossal and adrien brody gives an all time performance. if nothing else, i will give this film that it genuinely made me have to sit and really consider it’s perspective in a lot of depth and i really could say so much more about it, but i’ll leave it here — i would not want to close the year any other way.
