An incredible film about a self-defeating man that is already the "best" as far as talent is concerned, but he's still a loser because he's a deeply flawed human being with no character. He's all ego and doesn't understand what winning is if it doesn't involve the humiliation of his opponent. It's that fact that leaves him vulnerable to smarter opponents and a pathetic mess when they are done with him.

This is one of my favorite films. Paul Newman is hypnotic as Fast Eddie Felson, a character so fully real and rendered that the mechanics of the plot feel utterly inevitable. The entire story turns, honestly and purposefully, on the truth of this man. And it is a story not about pool, but about ambition, talent, addiction, and tragedy.
Eddie has a gift, a natural talent, but a series of character flaws and blind spots hold him back from true greatness. The movie isn't about him achieving that greatness so much as it is about him accepting the truth of himself.

The Hustler is a cruel movie. Piper Laurie is a gaping wound on one bum leg, and Paul Newman is pride run amok... 18K down the drain and nary a lesson learned. George C. Scott is the heart of this film, though, and it’s black and rotten. He takes Piper Laurie to pieces, and it’s not a fair fight.
Bert Gordon is the kind of villain that ruins real lives, but maybe that’s what Fast Eddie needs.

The Hustler is a film about losing. In that sense, it's a film about living. To win usually requires great losses. It is not a film about pool, but a story about people. Hustling is just a profession here, a way to make money. The lead may think it's the centre of his life, but slowly he finds it isn't. He must fulfil himself as a person, not a pool player. In the end his final victory is to surrender, to give up on his dreams and find value elsewhere. He is a man with talent but not character, with skills but not a purpose.
