ME: i would watch literally anything that stars Jessie Buckley
HBO: even a miniseries about Chernobyl that’s probably just six hours of people’s skin melting off in front of their loved ones as you despair about the worst horrors of all humankind?
ME: …does she sing in it?
(some janky storytelling along the way, but the movie has the right destination in mind, and Jessie Buckley should win 400 Oscars for her performance, give or take)
A winsome crossover between the social-realism of Ken Loach and the country spirit of Kacey Musgraves, Tom Harper’s “Wild Rose” might follow the familiar melodies of a fish-out-of-water crowdpleaser, but this story of a delinquent Glasgow woman who dreams of singing at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry still manages to sound unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Credit for that belongs to the ridiculous talent of Jessie Buckley, whose unbridled lead performance builds on her work in “Beast” and “Chernobyl” to confirm the young Irish star as one of the most exciting people you could ever hope to see on a movie screen.
There may be an off-the-rack quality to the film around her, as Nicole Taylor’s script doesn’t quite thread…
If you asked me now what my dream job was, I couldn’t even begin to answer you. 21 years into my life and I still don’t know what it exactly is I want to do. The passion I am defined by - film - probably won’t lead me anywhere: a combination of a competitive industry, ‘wrong place, wrong time’ and, frankly, not being good enough to peruse a genuine career. It’s been a cause of real sadness and embarrassment and discomfort for so long now. It feels like life is passing me by as I’ve watched friends begin careers, go into further education, generally thrive — and I feel stuck in a rutt, as indecisive as I am confused; hopeless and…
Get a woman that looks at you the way Sophie Okonedo looks at Jessie Buckley
i am absolutely OBSESSED with wild rose! wow. it's always so refreshing to see my home country scotland portrayed on screen because it's so rarely used in films, let alone the director and writer making it a key part in the story. jessie buckley is fucking phenomenal as rose-lynn and she is exactly the type of female character i love seeing: no fucks given, 100% real, and unapologetically emotional. there is so much truth, depth, and rawness to these characters and i completely fell in love with all of them. julie walters was fantastic also as usual! the scene near the end where rose-lynn is singing glasgow (no place like home) pulled on my heart strings so hard and it really hit close to home because of how close to there i used to live. i can't wait to revisit this someday soon because it was sooo so good. loved everything about it.
“That’s basic.”
This movie could be a twin to Olivier Assayas’ film, Clean; both are about women trying to make careers in music while trying to find out where their children fit into their life.
Actress Jessie Buckley gives one of the most high energy performances I’ve seen since Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky. Buckley’s character, Rose Lynn, is a wannabe country music singer (not country & western as she clarifies throughout the film).
Despite her talent and gusto, she is not put together enough to come up with a solid plan. While the movie doesn’t go in a traditional direction, it’s still pretty solid.
Note:
There’s a Nashville segment. I spent a total of 10 years there. The further out you…
