Listen to Pet Sounds. If you've never done so before, listen with headphones. If you think of the Beach Boys as a band about surfing and California, listen to Pet Sounds. If you think of them as the band from Full House, listen to Pet Sounds. If you're alive right now, listen to Pet Sounds. I am not generally at home to the Baby Boomer canon of rock music, but one place they got it right is Pet Sounds. This is the music of the human soul.

i’d almost forgotten that biopics could be this soulful, probing, and empathetic. (feels a touch reductive to use the b-word). if only Oren Moverman had time for all of the great musicians. poor RAY, ya know? he really got shafted. Dano is brilliant as "past" Brian Wilson, and John Cusack is... well, he's definitely alive. and, as "future" Brian Wilson, better than he's been in anything since High Fidelity.
I didn’t know a single thing about Brian Wilson or The Beach Boys before watching this so this was all new and EXTREMELY interesting to me. Paul Dano is fuckin awesome

Unlike anything I've ever seen, as it simultaneously condenses and expands on the tropes of the "sub-genre" (biopic) that it's been unfortunately squeezed into. Todd Haynes crafted 6 different versions of Bob Dylan in I'm Not There., but Bill Pohlad was wise in sticking with the dual-structure, especially because the conclusion rhymes in a way that works towards its yearning, symmetrical fashion. Separate sections of a complete whole have never felt so brilliant in their various contradictions, and like the good old days of vinyl, Love and Mercy enthralls like a perfect A-Side/B-Side record.

this morning i woke up and thought to myself “today is the day i’m supposed to watch paul dano sing some beach boys songs” and then i did it!! as frances halladay says, “sometimes it’s good to do what you’re supposed to do when you’re supposed to do it”
do not underestimate the power of hearing paul dano sing songs by the beach boys!! or the power of paul dano running around a recording studio in a plastic fireman hat! i’ve watched this three times now & my only complaint is that each time i have had to come to terms with the fact that i will be singing god only knows for a week straight. a small price to pay for a perfect performance!
