Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

So I watched Both Beetlejuice movies so I can give a proper review for this new entry into the franchise. And you know what? Even though it’s not as incredible as the first movie, This is still a worthy sequel that was a lot of fun.

Even though his isn’t as energetic as before, Michael Keaton is still incredible as the titular character. He still brings his A game to every scene he’s in and still proves why he’s one of my favorite actors of all time. It was great to see Winona Ryder as Lydia and Catherine O’Hara as Delia again. They bring a fresh twist on their danamic compared to the first film that still fits well. Lydia acting more like a stressed out mother and Delia being a pretentious artist that views highly of herself. Jenna Ortega did a great job as the rebellious Astrid. Even though her character was a bit annoying at the start, I started warming up to her character by the end. I would also like to shout out the newcomers of William Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
The effects are still as visually appealing and creative as classic Tim Burton films. The use of practical effects, stop motion, and CGI all work well and this is one of the first Tib Burton films in a long while to actually feel like a Tim Burton film. One thing that I can also tell apart from Burton's more “Hollywood” films is just how much control he was given to make this feel like his earlier works. You can tell by what’s on screen that everyone must have had the time of their lives making this film which is something I love to see. You don’t know how happy I was to hear Danny Elfman's original score back after all these years. I’ll admit, as a fan of the original movie ever since I was a child, I got a bit emotional at times throughout the movie.
Side Note. I know the reasoning why they didn’t want to bring back Jeffrey Jones as Charles, so the way they worked around not having him back while still giving a nice send off to his character was pretty funny. His over the top death cracked me up the first time I saw it. That’s another thing I love that they extended on with this film. Some of the people we see in the Afterlife are all timers. Personally Favorites being the gas mask guy and the cobra guy.
However, the thing holding this movie back from being an all time classic is that this film has too many different plots that don’t always get resolved the best. We have Lydia getting married to Beetlejuice, Lydia getting married to Roy, Astrid getting tricked by Jeremy, Delores searching for Beetlejuice, Lydia and Astrid reuniting with their dead Husband/Father respectively, Jackson doing his own thing, and Astrid reconciling with Lydia after learning what she’s been saying was all true. It just too much and some things could have been dropped from the final script all together.
Also less of a criticism, but it was kind of sad that Adam and Barbara weren’t in this film. I can understand why they didn’t want to bring back Alec Baldwin and the fact that both actors are a bit older now which would make little sense in universe given their ghosts. But still, it would've been cool to have at least gotten a little cameo.
But aside from those issues, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is still a great film that gave me a lot of joy. And frankly, that’s all I really wanted in a sequel to one of my favorite movies of all time. If you haven’t seen this one yet and you’re a fan of old school Tim Burton, definitely give this one a watch. I’ll be sure to revisit both films soon.

PS: Would’ve Loved To Have Seen The Original Planned Sequel From Back In The Day.
BEETLEJUICE GOES HAWAIIAN!

RIP BOB.
If I Had A Nickel Every Time Tim Burton Killed Of A Lovable Henchman Named Bob, I’d Have 2 Nickels…
