Beetlejuice: “Spill your guts. Who wants to go first? Alright, I will.”
(opens his shirt and his gut spills out)
“See, I'm willing to do the work!”
Wow, what a fantastic films.
I haven’t laughed that much in the cinema in quite a while.
The sequel for Beetlejuice has been a long time coming. After the success of the first film, Warner Brothers wanted to greenlight a sequel and approached Burton to write a treatment. Burton had no interest in actually creating a sequel at that time.
He had other projects he wished to work on and didn't really have any good ideas for a beetlejuice sequel. So what he did is he created the most terrible script ideal that’s ever been seen so that they would turn it down. He created, Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian, in which he follows Lydia Deets on holiday to Hawaii, follows her around, goes surfing and hijinx ensue.
Warner Brothers passed on the idea and making a sequel. Although they did create a cartoon which did feature some of ideas from the treatment.
But this legacy sequel was certainly the way to go. It works so well and blends well with the original story.
The opening is fantastic, it was great to see the Geffen Pictures logo again at the start.
(Defunct in 1998 after making films like Risky Business, After Hours, The Last Boyscout, Interview with the Vampire. Absorbed by Warner Brothers and David Geffen’s other company DreamWorks)
Then following along the model village with the same font for the credits with the same score to spark nostalgia. (It worked for TopGun Maverick!)
There is so much to love about this film. Monica Belushi repairing herself with a staple gun. The way she sucks out people’s souls. The musical numbers, the Soul Train. The house wearing a shroud.
Selfies! That’s the best ever result for a selfie ever!
I think my two favourite things were;
Bob, it’s amazing how we empathise with this downtrodden character. Justice for Bob!
And every time the Detective gets handed a coffee. 😂
Danny Elfman did a great job with the score. But the music in the delivery room, using the score from Carrie. Fantastic.
Winona Ryder is amazing as is Catherine O’Hara.
Jenna Ortega, sublime as usual. Seriously who else could have played this role. I doubt they would have even considered anyone else.
Can’t wait to see it again.
“I think it was Dostoevsky who said... Later, fucker!”
