The Carpenter/Russell Quintet.
Do not fuck with it.
The OG of the gig economy.
This movie has Kris Kristofferson right when he was hitting. He provides most of the music for the soundtrack and it's pretty damn great. It's like if a drug dealer was a blue collar job.
Feels like a Bob Rafelson movie.
]]>Damn its fun.
And its clear everyone is having fun.
Huge cast too...most of them before they "hit" along with other classic actos like Woody Strode and Pat Hingle.
Great stuff. I actually think this would be stronger with a buddy cop element.
]]>Is it the best western?
Yes.
Is it the most fun western?
Also yes.
Kicks. Ass.
]]>Weird to see PSH in the romantic lead position.
Most of this is just people delivering Mamet dialogue in staccato style.

]]>This has been in my queue a long time.
Honestly I am not a big Altman fan although there are a few of his films I dig. (MASH, THE PLAYER)
I cannot for the life of me understand why this is rated so highly. The level of verbal scat here is borderline annoying.
The plot is a mess. Sterling Hayden (whom I LOVE) is unwatchable here. It seems Altman tapped into some real life mental health demons that Hayden stuggled with late in life.
I mean honestly Hayden and Gould talking about men's faces sitting on the beach is sorta nuts (and reads as just stupid).
I don't often refer to art as stupid but this movie and its out of control slap dash dialogue reads as stupid.
Also 5000 bills had been discontinued for over 4 years when the movie was made...
I could go on.
Its just an indulgent mess.
And it sure as fuck isn't a noir. I don't care if Marlowe is a character or not.
This is not noir.
I understand that the giant meta idea of this movie is artists making art and wanting control over something they have no control over.
Honestly it's kind of up its own ass.
But damn it's a pretty beautiful ass.
I miss the time when movies looked like this.
I miss good Barry Levinson films too.
Has anyone considered yet that the crossover between John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness and The Substance is right there?
I mean it's the same damn green goo. Just make the green goo Prince of Darkness goo the same goo as the substance goo and you got yourself a goo goo movie
]]>I really can't believe that such a big John Carpenter fan how I haven't seen this film already. Long time blind spot movie.
Its not Top Tier Carpenter. I think it's got some good ideas but I'm not sure that it completely comes together as a movie.
It isn't Top Gun on wheels like people claim. The narrative arc isn't even close to being the same.
Its fine. Better if you are drunk. Duvall is probably the best thing here except when he is talking to cars. Cruise seems completely lost here and is just mugging scene to scene. Was waiting for Reilly to say "Shake and bake" but that's wishful drunk thinking.
Mmmm....whatcha say.
I say its pretty damn funny.

]]>Saw this on repeat on HBO back in the day.
To think Pee Wee was just an iteration of a prop comic....
Half this movie was Caan in a hospital.
Not the Peckinpah I expected.
Great action film.
Well paced. Beautiful landscapes. Amazing score.
Best thing Liam Neeson has done in years.

]]>Tamest of the erotic thriller genre.
]]>This film might exist in the same universe as Streets of Fire but it is definitely down a darker alley in a much grungier city.
Fun watch.
Much like SoF it seems to lose its way deep into the 2nd act but it is always beautiful to look at, albiet with an extra coat of grime.
And Divine is absolutely the best thing here. WOW.
]]>One of the best rock musicals of all time.
One of the best neo-noir films of all time.
Genre busting in the best way.
]]>Great film...as long as you can view it through a lens of cultural historocity.
No idea how Lange won over Teri Garr...or Glenn Close for Garp honestly.
]]>Long time blind spot.
I haven't missed much apparently except for overwraught Boomer tears and a bunch of cringe scenes.
I like a lot of these actors but this movie is easily one of the most disappointing blind spots I have explored.
]]>Dated? Yes.
But this is a GREAT Hitchcockian thriller that remains terribly underseen. Can you imagine this with Glenn Powell and Florence Pugh? With Hugh Grant as the Dudley Moore role?
Book it.
]]>Yeah I watched it again. F*** off.
]]>So the Evil Genius in this is Elon Musk, right?
]]>Fuck Wicked.
This is the musical America deserves.
As a Peckinpah fan I didnt really get this. It is a juxtaposition of platitudes in bunkers and lots of explosions. It never comes together.
]]>A few of my thoughts during the screening:
Cuck Tales! oo woo oo
Every day they're out there making
Cuck Tales! oo woo oo
"Bring out your dead!" [clang]
So Corpse Bride II?
....Burton and Eggers should do a thing.
Also climbing the charts on most scene movie. Definitely most seen movie while high
]]>Quickly Rising on the list of most watched films ever for me
]]>My only note on this rewatch was that the music seems very TV movie-of-the-week in its almost over the top orchestration. It has a very melodrama vibe.
]]>No wonder so much debate over this film being QT's best.
I never get tired of watching it.
]]>At least 10 too many racial, rape and gay jokes.
The plot makes 0 sense. It might be the worst "assassin plot" movie I ever watched.
Good climbing shots though. And George Kennedy is awesome.
]]>Watched on Tuesday December 24, 2024.
]]>Harder Kills.
Goofier Plot.
Yes also a Christmas movie.
Probably the weakest of the trilogy.
(That's right. I said what I said)
Yes. Christmas movie.
]]>Anyone saying this isn't a Christmas movie can FUCK OFF.
Then keep fucking off.
Fuck off until you find a gate with a sign that says "You Can't Fuck off Past Here"
Climb the gate.
Dream the impossible dream.
And Fuck off Forever.
I don't need that energy in my life.
Also sainthood campaign for John McClane.
]]>We need more coutroom case films.
Good mid-tier Eastwood.
Came here for the Goofy Christmas action movie. Stayed for the John Leguizamo over the top villain performance along with really bad dad jokes. Definitely going on my what to watch when high at Christmas list
]]>This film was another long time blind spot for me. I think even decades later it's reputation had prevented me from ever seeing it.
And that is unfortunate because I may have discovered what is one of my favorite westerns of all time. I look forward to watching it again and again. I honestly have no idea why this film has the critical reputation that it does. If people don't like this movie they don't like movies.
Part Once Upon a Time in the West and part Doctor Zhivago it might be the most romantic Western I've seen in recent years but it's juxtapositioned up against some harrowing violence. And considering it it's a tale of immigrants in their relationship to their country it's kind of resonant right now. And if you've never seen this film I would invite you to check it out especially in light of current American circumstances.
]]>AIN'T NO HOLE IN THE WASHTUB
When I was a kid this was on repeat on HBO and I probably watched it 30 times.
I hadn't watched it in nearly 40 years.
Still holds up.
]]>Hadn't watched this in years...and wanted to give it a try again.
It sucks.
Murray as annoying but likeable guy works.
Murray as an asshole does not. Yes I include Groundhog Day.
]]>Watched on Sunday December 22, 2024.
]]>Watched on Thursday December 19, 2024.
]]>It's fine for an afternoon watch or folding the laundry.
I wanted the hero to be more heroic maybe?
The one big action sequence of a car racing and crashing on the highway is so digital awful the movie lost a half star.
Probably cause they suck.
