“TOO MUCH SAUCE?”
I can only describe the main character in the terms COOL AS FUCK. I was expecting a tense dark revenge story akin to Saulnier’s previous work but this was a wonderful surprise. Combating the corruption with non lethal badassery is extremely satisfying
Give this shit a watch
-
Non-lethal Reacher, extremely tasty, probably my favorite Saulnier.
-
“he’s on the wikipedia” is going to make its way into my everyday vernacular
-
“So I was thinkin’, what if we just walk away?”
“Well, now you’re starting to talk some—“
“But then I was like, nahhhh.”
I know that was one of the lines in the trailer, but hot DAMN that shit is badass, and Aaron Pierre mutters it (growls it?) like a seasoned pro.
Jeremy Saulnier’s latest violently cynical action/thriller romp may essentially just be non-lethal Rambo meets small-town Serpico, but that’s fine and dandy with me cause this thing steadily oozes tension like a brand new bottomless tube of toothpaste. Something reeks in Nowheresville, USA, and by golly, our plays-by-the-rules one-man wrecking crew is gonna figure out what dirty secrets are hidden inside those rural government establishments.
The (unsurprisingly) wicked smart…

-This movie understands the appeal of First Blood better than any of the actual First Blood sequels.
-This should be a megastar-making performance for Aaron Pierre. Can a performance in a Netflix thriller make you a megastar? I hope so.
-I’m not opposed to an action movie with lots of carnage when the material calls for it. In Rebel Ridge Pierre’s character is an extremely intelligent ex-Marine up against a corrupt police force; it doesn’t make sense for this character to start mowing down his enemies. Instead, he’s trying not to kill people. Which is not that easy to do under the circumstances! In the middle of fights, he’s constantly disarming opponents, emptying their weapons, kicking aside pistols. (To be…

The feel good film of the year
-
Sad that I’m not fully on the Rebel Ridge train, not only because I love the non-lethal approach as a unique way to expose police practices that default to violence as hypocritical and almost juvenile, but because Aaron Pierre is so damn good. I think I just find Jeremy Saulnier’s direction kinda boring!
-
Aaron Pierre has got the fuckin goods
-
Unsure. Part intellectual action-thriller constructed around one man's quest for true justice that makes excellent use of its quieter, more restrained moments to build up to the inevitable final explosion, but part (the final third) almost feels like it undermines the anti-establishment ideas that took so long to conjure in the first place. Aaron Pierre, however, is really great.

2024
Fucking loved this, particularly in how it takes Terry’s martial arts philosophy to its logical conclusion: a practice of self-discipline and de-escalation. The system is poisoned all over. Terry isn’t saved by it. He’s simply saving his own soul.
It’s an ongoing fascination of mine how we valorize military in film when their opponents are cops. Both are ostensibly arms of the same system. I find it so interesting that the cops immediately despise Terry more once it’s revealed he never deployed. I think Aaron Pierre plays the weight of that + the weight of being a pawn in the institution so well.
I agree somewhat that too many movies like this in America are afraid to show…
