Nothing says Christmas like hundreds of naked elves running as a herd on the frozen tundra in subzero weather!
A unique, quirky, wickedly delicious Finnish film that has won its way into my heart and on my Big Screen every Christmas Holiday!
For cinephiles like myself whom demand more from their Christmas fare than the typical mainstream offerings!
Watched this for the first time last year and loved it. Glad my second watch was with Joe Bob
Watched The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs: Joe Bob’s Christmas Carnage
Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is surprisingly a fun, entertaining film with a twist on the usual Christmas fare. The film stands out for its unique and imaginative take on Christmas mythology, blending horror, dark fantasy, and dark comedy that makes the atmosphere feel both warm and sinister—due to the undertones of folklore. It’s visually striking, the practical effects are impressively done, and its atmosphere will give you a unique cinematic experience.
My mainly issue is probably the pacing. The film started off really slow for a 83 minutes. I don’t mind at all if they make it longer for character development.
Generally, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is hella bizzare but it’s actually a perfect christmas family film (except for the naked old elves part). I can see myself or people watch this with their kids and have a great time with it.
Rare Exports is a spin on the classic Christmas Santa Claus story....veering more towards the Krampus legend. The film begins with a discovery under a mountain; apparently the actual Santa Claus. The credit sequence shows us that this is not the Coca Cola Santa...but something much darker that was put under a mountain for a reason. It's a great premise! But then the film starts proper and the pacing issues begin to surface. It takes an eternity over establishing things that are blatantly obvious, before moving onto scenes that are odd and don't make sense and eventually it settles on a climax that does not give good payoff to everything that went before it. It never really gets going properly!…
It’s no wonder why director Jalmari Hollander is transitioning into bigger Hollywood films like the RAMBO prequel considering RARE EXPORTS and his other films have that studio action gloss and scope.
(And clearly DIE HARD is a favorite film of his).
Part of the charm of RARE is that it wears the costume of Blockbuster quite well while keeping its characters, a bunch of reindeer farmers, to a minimum.
And…so much dong.
To be fair, it makes a lot of sense considering where its coming from
Some of the VFX hasn’t aged well but that’s to be expected for a film almost 15 years old and otherwise looks great.
Very cool play on the Santa Claus mythos.
As screened on Joe Bob Briggs’ The Last Drive In on Shudder.
On The Road: Water The Forests Of Finland
I learned last year when attempting to compile a list of Christmas movies that they are pretty scarce, so this year I decided not to make one. However, apparently the key is to look beyond Hollywood to other countries, as you may come across some fun, if not a hidden gem as is to some extent the case with this fantasy horror flick about a group of individuals who stumble upon some sort of cursed excavation involving none other than Santa Claus.
While the horror and humor are not on the same level as a movie like Krampus, you are still treated to some very effective jump scares. Still, the plot twists…
This is absolutely the weirdest Christmas Chiller I have ever seen, but I’m like a magnet for all things weird so yeah I enjoyed it. I actually saw this when it first came out and it was one of those deals where me and my friends were the only ones in the theater so we talked to each other the whole time. Because of that, I thought this sucked. However, I’m glad I gave it another chance because, on this rewatch, I found it really quite good!
The story is about a group of excavators who uncover the long buried “real” Santa Claus. As local children begin to disappear, they realize that he’s not the jolly fellow they thought. This…
Most Festive horror films tend to be shitty Psycho Santa Slashers in the vein of Silent Night, Deadly Night, or some kind of Krampus movie. Maybe that’s why Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale feels so refreshing. A brilliant and engrossing dark fantasy film with some creepy horror elements and some great comedic moments thrown in for good measure, Rare Exports is a nice, dark spin on the Santa Claus mythology.

I actually had a decent time with this freaky Finnish fairytale horror fantasy. The central relationship between father and son really works and the film holds some fun creepy imagery. The cinematography and performances are quite good. It doesn't overstay it's welcome and how it concludes is actually hilarious.
If I'm being honest, I'd much prefer to rewatch this evil Santa tale over Krampus. I wouldn't desperately seek it out but it's worth your time if you are in the mood.
The first film in the Joe Bob's Last Drive-In special, Christmas Carnage. Joe Bob gives you all the Finnish Christmas history trivia you could EVER ask for. This was amazing, the breadth and novel of information he gives you. I believe I have been watching this film since like 2012 or so. Admittedly, I'm a bit burn out on the film. But as part of the Last Drive-In, it was fun. Darcy looks great in her white outfit but JB had her wearing this wreath with black candles to represent St. Lucia, until she was over it (she later nonchalantly says, she's so corrupted unlike the saint she was momentarily cosplaying). Their drive-in set was nicely Christmassy...complete with a singing toy deer head.
