Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Miles Morales, a high-school student, is bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Spider-Man. Around the same time, Kingpin uses a super-collider which merges different dimensions and as a result a number of Spider-people (including Peter Parker) from different worlds suddenly find themselves in Miles's dimension. Now they must work together to save the world and return to their homes.

Not that it hasn't been obvious for years, but "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is concrete proof that animated features aren't kiddie fare anymore. This is a wonderful, heartfelt, and original movie that will appeal to everyone across the entire age spectrum.
It's not just a family film, it's a film about family: Miles's relationships with his father and uncle, Peter's marital troubles, the "family" of Spider-people consoling one of their own for his loss. Even the villain's motivation is all about family. Spider-Man's popularity was always in big part due to the fact that he was an ordinary guy out of his suit, and "Spider-Verse" takes that concept one step further.
Worth mentioning is also the animation. It's less polished than what we are used to the last decade or so, but it's still unique, colorful, and pleasant to the eye. Each Spider-person's style is distinct and there are some nice surprises when it comes to the villains.

Regarding the voice acting, filmmakers went for a mostly unknown cast, which however matches their characters' looks and personalities perfectly. Nic Cage as Spider-Man Noir and Liev Schreiber as Kingpin were my personal favorites.

In a banner year for comic book adaptations, "Spider-Verse" comes to plant its flag near the top of the competition. This is a movie that can stand next to the best of Pixar and Disney's classics. These festive days, I can't think of a nicer gift a movie-lover can give to himself than the chance to see in a theater this delightful piece of cinematic art.
And try not to choke up too much when the Stan Lee cameo comes up.
