Okay, I'm gonna say it: This is my new favorite Spider-Man film (sorry Tobey), and possibly my all-time favorite comic book film!!! I also jump on the bandwagon calling it the best 2018 had to offer. It was that freaking good. Sure, there are plenty of beats you can see coming a mile away, but there's just so much love put into all of it. From the story, the music (it makes me want to try more rap as well), and some of the most breathtaking animation I've ever seen. I read about the years it took to get it right, requiring a month for four seconds alone, and it really payed off. This is the comic book-ey film I've seen yet.
It all looked straight out of the pages, even down to the line work and the text boxes. I admit I've only read the first 40 or so issues of the original Spider-Man, but this (and the game Shattered Dimensions) makes me want to give the others a shot in the future. And as much as I would have liked more screen-time for certain characters, I'm glad things didn't get too muddled and the focus stayed with Miles and him coming into his own as a hero. Just the fact Peter isn't the main character again is refreshing as well. Wonderful performances from Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Liev Schreiber, and Kathryn Hahn.
Another small aspect refreshing to me is while Gwen Stacy has a similar arc to several of the women in the MCU, she isn't constantly smack talking everybody. For whatever reason, they seemed to think that automatically makes one a strong character. Yeah, it doesn't. Simply having a stake in the story and being able to stand alone next to the other male characters make you strong (to me that is). At least they finally caught on with Black Panther.
