Amongst all the buddy cop action comedies that have been released in the last decade, The Nice Guys must surely be one of the best and the funniest, owing to a typically sharp script from Shane Black and an absolutely inspired lead pairing. Like with Black's previous buddy cop duo of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, the pairing of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe is just amazing since they have so much chemistry and the banter between them is sublime. It's not just them either, since so many of the other performances (especially from Angourie Rice) are wonderful while Black is just on top form here as both writer and director. As he did with Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Black just has a knack for writing excellent buddy cop scripts and his direction here is also top-quality, making the film such a blast and so consistent in its humour and wit as it runs the gamut of great gags, strong plotting, and even a few genuinely emotional moments. Those are the things that make The Nice Guys a first-rate action comedy and one of the finest examples of a buddy cop film as it matches a terrific lead duo (and even at times trio) with a director at the top of his game. Such a shame that this didn't get a whole bunch of sequels like Lethal Weapon as this film is so great.
