“So you're telling me you made a porno where the plot is the point?” - Holland March
This awesome 70’s style buddy action comedy is basically a spiritual successor to director Shane Black’s Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. These kind of movie are really where his talent shine the brightest. The Nice Guys is a bit heavier on the action but I think the script, while quite strong, is not “as” brilliant as that of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. I also felt that Ryan Gosling was, at times, trying a little too hard to be funny. And make no mistake, he is very funny here, I just think he overdose it sometimes. Still, his chemistry with Russell Crowe is the heart of the movie and the main reason it works so well.
Just like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang the movie left the door wide open for a sequel. But, just like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang not enough people came to see it and that was that. It’s really unfortunate because further adventure with these two (nice) guys could have been a lot of fun. This one, most certainly is!
