Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

there's no putting just how much i love this film into words. into the spider-verse came out at the point when people started to write off superhero films, regarding them as formulaic & generic. then this came out and forced literally everyone to rethink what they thought they knew because it's so ridiculously innovative. not just in it's breathtaking animation but in it's story, characters, soundtrack, and most especially it's detail.

it's completely insane, it's littered everywhere in the movie. right from the beginning you're thrown into a world that looks more like a comic book than it does an animated film, which is just spider-verse's charm. it's literally a comic book! flash cuts, moving eyes on the costume, the text shown on the screen, or image, just like in comic books. in the school, after miles' second encounter with gwen, EVERYONE KNOWS "am i the weird guy now?" "play dumb" who's morales? "not THAT dumb!". showing his thoughts not only through his voice, but in a visual style as well, that manages to make sense in a comic universe due to the yellow backgrounds with the classic font. the comic panels taking over the screen, like when prowler starts his bike, or miles' leap of faith. it progresses through the events. showing miles run away and then replacing each strip with the bike getting ready to transition into the full screen shot of prowler riding away. with the leap of faith, it shows miles steadying himself in the air to fully transition into the dive. on top of looking cool, it's never been done before. the boxes too, like when it places one of a guys mouth next to him, during the scene after miles and gwen meet for the second time. there's no other comic book movie that's ever attempted something like this. scott pilgrim maybe, but it doesn't utilize it nearly as well as the team behind spider-verse do. oh and the amazing moments where it flashes to full artistic mode for split seconds, like this one. they're just stunning, nothing less. i don't think it even needs to be mentioned how much the vibrant, bright colors help exaggerate and bring to life the animation. the reds of peter's mask, the blue, purple, red, yellow all throughout nyc. car lights shining on the road, ect. they missed nothing. the use of those colors is really cool when it comes to dof in which things like colors and text are unaligned when they're out of focus to create depth of field, rather that using blurring. the use of half-toning was also very unique here. like, what genius decided on that?! everything in this film is so full of ambition, life, passion and i'm not exactly sure how to put it into words without having a really long ramble like that one so - the whole animation and artist style behind into the spider-verse is probably the most interesting and unique thing you will ever see. it's never been done before, at least not as this technical level, and it helps to bring so much passion into scenes by combining it's incredible use of comic design with the vibrant colors. i think the best way to state how it could make you feel is that i'm constantly laughing and smiling through this film because seeing that level of detail just makes me feel estatic. i've seen this well over 25 times now and i'm still noticing new things - that's how spectacular it is!!

can't forget the humor either! a lot funnier than most full 'comedy' movies claim to be. almost every scene in the first 20 or so minutes keeps you laughing, then there's the stuff with the og peter & super collider, then it's back to laughing with peter B. parker!!! also can't forget basically any line spider-noir speaks. it's all absolutely hilarious. "this is a pretty hardcore origin story".

the characters are great too. almost everyone is given time to grow, learn and progress. the spider-gang also all have the really cool designed backstories that literally come from comic books that are thrown in a pile and then they're introduced. they all have their own personalities and having say, a nazi fighting detective comfort an anime girl from the future after her father's robot breaks is something that only this movie would be able to pull off. miles' theme is amazing too, and it's really interesting when it's combined with other themes throughout the film based on the current situation he's in.

not only is this my favorite film, but it'll most likely be that for a long long long time. it's genuinely not possible to put just how much i love this, or why i think it's completely flawless, into words without starting to not make much sense because i'll always end up rambling (because i'm just not good at writing reviews, but this is my favorite film and i wanted to say why. everything i've mentioned makes me love this movie - it's style. that's what i really wanted to write) also this should explain some things lmao. not only a redefinition of superhero films but a redefinition of animated ones as well. so if you've actually manged to read through all of my incomprehensible manic ramblings than thank you!
