About a boy, on the verge of shouldering great responsibility.
This is a work of art, clearly created by people who grew up with Spider-Man as their favourite superhero. They are totally in awe with him and they want the viewer to feel what they have felt their entire lives. It just is made with so much love and care, it is like an old Sony Ericsson phone -- attention to details, even where it probably wouldn't matter.
Despite many things going for it, what makes it truly great is the menacing presence of Kingpin and his motivation to access multiple realities. It feels like Vincent D'Onofrio who made the role his own in Daredevil, is still somehow present. Unlike the tame plot device from Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) (in a sort of a "funny" way), where Spider-Man overcomplicates Dr. Strange's spell to open the multiverse, there is pain and despair in Kingpin's activities which is perfect. The chemistry between the primary three Spiders and some secondary characters makes it a thoroughly fulfilling experience.
It features perhaps my favourite iteration of Spider-Man's leap of faith as a kid who is wearing sneakers let's go for the very first time. The details, the colours and the soundtrack are very inspired, as the creators go all in with their idea of a hybrid between animation and hand-drawn comic techniques. Although some stylistic choices like blur effects don't always work, they are far from a nuisance. Not all versions of Spider-Man are entertaining or great, but they add a sense of authenticity to the parallel worlds -- anybody could be somebody.
A truly mesmerising and enjoyable film. Recommended for anyone in search for a breath of fresh air.
