Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The greatest on-screen depiction of a comic book ever made.

The art, the vibrance the beauty… Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gets significantly better on every rewatch. This is now my third time watching and while the first two were not under ideal viewing circumstances, it finally hit me how stunning this movie is. The comic book feel has never been performed better. This is probably the best animation I have ever seen. The quotes and sound effects spelled out on the screen feels somewhat like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World which I enjoy. The soundtrack pushes this movie to the next level. So many moments throughout the film are heightened by these great songs. On top of the style behind this film, it is also just an intelligent story. The meta commentary on superhero tales is a lot of fun. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is extremely deserving of its Best Animated Feature Academy Award.

This film is also perfectly cast. Shameik Moore is a great Miles and the character’s design with the black costume and Jordan’s is fantastic. Jake Johnson is my favorite character of the film. He basically just does Nick Miller dressed up as Spider-Man and I love it. Johnson is a phenomenal homeless dude/shitbag with roles like this, New Girl, Tag, and Let’s Be Cops. I’m a big fan of the Peter B. Parker sweatpants costume too. Hailee Steinfeld, Chris Pine, and Nic Cage are other cast favorites of mine but they are all great from top to bottom.

My favorite thing to do while watching this film is to look for all of the countless Spider-Man references. The Peter Parker opener is chock full of them with things such as the upside down kiss from Spider-Man, stopping the bus from Spider-Man 2, and the dance sequence from Spider-Man 3. The ‘Scared of the Dark’ funeral montage gives me chills. Then we get the classic sequence of Spider-Man learning his powers. The swinging in the woods is a lot of fun. The ‘What’s Up Danger’ montage is the best moment of the film. His new costume and the leap of faith off of the building, rising into the city streets is iconic. Goosebumps every time. The ending action is also exciting. I’m so pumped for Across the Spider-Verse
