Having loved the source novel, this fillum had a lot to live up to - and thanks to Murphy's tortured soulface, it did...
...the sound design, framing and the use of focus in Mielants' adaptation is masterful; the devil really is in the detail as we feel each event & confliction adding further weight to the burden Furlong is carrying on his shoulders - literally fuel for the fire…
...the scene between Furlong and Emily Watson's terrifying Mother Superior is so chilling I don't think I exhaled throughout its duration; unaware of quite how absorbed I was, I then found a tear or two escaping as Furlong left the barber's chair, having made up his mind...
...the references to David Copperfield & A Christmas Carol add to the Dickensian feel of the piece - even though it's set in the nineteen 80s (I know, right!) - and, like many great stories, when the ending comes the title takes on further significance - this is quiet, profound and powerful cinema.
