cillian murphy in this is truly truly phenomenal. the subtlety of his acting has always been one of my favourite things about his craft, but it shines through like nothing else here. every irish person knows a man like this - an older irish man so caught up in his own melancholy that even his own voice seems to pull back and hide within himself - and cillian murphy captures that so well. a lot of the subtlety, and the intensity in what’s not said rather than what is, within the movie is thanks to claire keegan, and something that upon reading the book, i thought was a particularly literary feature, that would not translate well to screen. i love being wrong!! the attention to detail is brilliant, and i’m sure one that i’ll get a lot more out of on second watch. in particular, the end scene where he carries the young girl back to his house over his shoulders like a bag of coal almost took my breathe away. urgently need someone in my life to watch this movie so i have someone to talk to about it !!
