  • Fences

    Fences

    ★★★½

Denzel and Viola acted their butts off in this flick. I hope they at least get nominated.

Overall, Fences is a well made drama that unfortunately reminded me of Death of a Salesman, a play/movie that I hate to my core. Fences is a better version of that dungheap.

On a side note, I found out about Carrie Fisher when I got out of this. Sad stuff.

  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

    ★★★★

Return of the Blue Milk: A Star Wars Story

The last 2/3 of this movie are truly captivating, but the first 1/3 is rocky. Which can be traced back to Saw Gerrera, who added literally nothing to the movie. It was clear to me in retrospect that he was only in there because of the tv show. I find that nauseating.

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

    ★★★★½

MY FAVORITE FRANCHISE IS BACK, FAM.

It was such a treat to be allowed to come back to the Wizarding World.

Homegirl Rowling has delivered yet again on characters you can fall in love with and imagination up the wazoo.

Special shoutout to David Yates for nailing the tone and making me feel like a day hadn't passed since I last experienced the magic.

    Fuck I'm so happy.

  • Doctor Strange

    Doctor Strange

    ★★½

Call me old-fashioned, but I have a big problem with movies that rush through story to get to set pieces.

Doctor Strange is everything you've come to expect from the MCU. A hollow, tone deaf set up for a payoff feels like it may never come.

I do give the movie credit for mentioning Bono and a couple of cool visual scenes but, and I've said this before, special effects don't make a movie great.

Also, it was really nice of Scott Derrickson to tribute Vine during the final act. Classy guy.

  • Moana

    Moana

    ★★★★

Disney Animation gets their bat on the ball, but it's not quite a home run.

  • Inferno

    Inferno

    ★★★½

I will not feel guilty for liking these movies.

  • The Accountant

    The Accountant

    ★★★★

Are movies allowed to be good now?

After a schlock-filled last few months, rising star Gavin O'Connor has gifted us with one of the most engaging thrillers of the last few years.

  • The Girl on the Train

    The Girl on the Train

    ★★½

White People Crying Close To The Camera: The Movie

Average mystery film. Biiiig let down for me.

  • The Edge of Seventeen

    The Edge of Seventeen

    ★★★★

With time, this will be considered among the best teen comedies of the decade, if it isn't already.

  • Snowden

    Snowden

    ★★★★

Well made and with a lot on its mind, Snowden is one of the year's most thought-provoking films that deserves to be discussed.

  • Deepwater Horizon

    Deepwater Horizon

    ★★★½

A by-the-numbers disaster movie held afloat by probably the most emotionally raw scene cinema has seen all year.

  • The Magnificent Seven

    The Magnificent Seven

    ★★★½

I hope someone looking at my letterboxd right now is getting genuinely triggered that my 800th entry is The Magnificent Seven.

Anyways, Seven is an average movie, above-average western. An overall entertaining time at the movies.
