Is David Gordon Green trying to pull off his personal Halloween III: Season of the Witch by being a peculiar movie where everyone will talk about it for decades and expecting a potential cult following? Not sure yet but it’s evidently an abnormal sequel to make, even weirder as a finale of a trilogy.
Laurie Strode first lines of dialogue technically described exactly what kind of film this is going to be; ‘’ Michael Myers is the personification of evil’’ and I guess they ride on that wave for the rest of the movie. It acts more like a possession movie than a slasher movie, which is great because it feels different but it’s pretty hard to understand the motive behind this choice.
I’ll admit something: I’m not mad Michael Myers was on the film for less than 10 minutes (and didn’t even show up for the first hour or so). I’m not mad they decided to focus on Corey Cunningham and put other great characters on the side. I’m ultimately disappointed by the final conflict that lasted no more than 5 minutes. It boggles me that all the marketing campaign was put on this duel and all we got was a small battle in a single room with no more than 4 knives and one fridge.
But how do I feel about Halloween Ends? I think it’s a good film. But not a great sequel to a Halloween film. The biggest flaw is the ending and it’s because I feel the writers didn’t know how to finish it either. A gigantic messy and unsatisfying finale. To be fair, everything regarding Corey's behaviour and spiral down mental state was very interesting. We could have capitalized one more movie with him, that’s what I get from this.
Congrats to David Gordon Green as a Director, it’s very audacious to have a franchise where the three movies feel completely different (from the tonality to the structure) from each other. On the good side, Ends can be watched on a standalone compared to Kills. But I still believe it would have been awesome to have one complete trilogy that happens to be during one long night. No matter the quality, that would have made a cool threequel to watch in one sitting with friends.
But hey, on the bright side, we got the horniest Halloween movie ever and the coolest opening main theme with the pumpkins.
