Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends

Seems I left the theatre as flummoxed as everyone else did, but I guess my confusion stems more from how this movie isn't what people expected, than how it's such a godawful piece of shit or whatever is being said (I've only seen the star ratings, so I definitely look forward to reading other thoughts; I'm in no way saying "I'm right, you're wrong" or anything). This is a natural conclusion to DGG's story, and I mean, if someone didn't want to hear it, they could stick to Halloween (2018), or better yet, just watch the original. Never understood the poor reception reboots/sequels get when they try something different. Why would anyone want the same thing again and again? I love the RZ Halloweens because buddy had something to say about the way people deify monsters and profit off of victims' suffering (as true today as it ever was—y'all see Dahmer?!?). Similarly, DGG is using his platform to suggest that the real horror is all around us every day, begetting further horror as we alternately ignore it, accept it, and worship it, if not outright engage in it (and is he wrong?). Halloween, the film series, is really just "the Shape," i.e. not something that you can pin down, and to say it's specifically a guy creeping in the laundry with autumnal vibes (perfectly shot, edited, and scored creeping—don't get it twisted) is to inhibit any sort of creativity. Season of the Witch is often extolled for being a deviation, and those reviews generally include an expressed desire for more like it, but the moment someone does something new, we drag it through the dirt. I don't know. As a sequel to Halloween Kills (and hell, Halloween II [2009], for that matter), and a curious (distinctly) American Lady Vengeance adaptation, this is pretty great. Also, can we talk about the molting pumpkins in the opening credits? Fucking stunning.
