The magical world of Oz offers emotionally charged joy in this successful traditional style musical. We’re dropped right into Oz after the death of the Wicked Witch of the West and then are transported back to her origin story.. Color palettes are remarkably intense and bright which takes quite a while to get used to the digitally indulgent CGI appearance. The performances by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are strong and by the middle of the film ..swell into extraordinary. “Gah-Linda” absolutely loves herself, and her infectious bubbly energy is sure to win you over at some point despite her wicked behavior. Elphaba has always had to stand up for herself against racism and mistreatment while holding back the incredible power at her gnarly fingertips. There’s a moment where the power of friendship overwhelms the viewer and never lets go. Leading into the next scene, and the famous musical number POPULAR, is where the movie is at its peak. Suddenly whisked away to a magical adventure, our leads face a new danger that can change their lives forever. Many emotionally connecting messages are focused on including favoritism, jealousy, friendship, bullying, political unrest, and even love. There’s no doubt that the music, at times, only elevates the effectiveness. At other times they are overly indulgent and too visually expressive. Cynthia Erivo’s exceptional voice is still exploding inside my memories as I write this, and it is already clear I’ll be seeing this again very soon.
