So I’m not a deep musical fan, never really been my thing but as I’ve gone through my journey as a fan of film my issue with them is weirdly fading a bit. It’s not entirely gone, but it’s fading to where I think I might be able to say I don’t have a direct issue with them anymore.
So I liked Wicked and I cannot deny the artistry in it, it’s very well made and well put together, but it’s not my favorite of the year it just never was going to be, had you told me a year or two ago that I would end up going to see a 3 hour musical in theaters and that I wouldn’t want to gouge my eyes out afterwards I genuinely would not have believed you but here we are, that’s a good thing.
Now do I think Wicked is perfect? No, that’s the honest to god truth, I feel like had it not been so well done I would’ve given it a 7/10 but it just had the artistry, the world is beautiful and jumps off the screen, the performances are very great (but still give Mikey Madison the Oscar for best actress), the directing is there. It’s good. I liked the movie a lot more than I thought I was going to. I can definitely see why for some this could be their watch of the year, it’s that well put together.
Now I’d like to circle back to the part where I said, “I liked the movie a lot more than I thought I was going to,” why am I circling back? Well I’d like to take a moment to personally diss the trailer for this movie, this movie’s trailer made it look horrible, and if not for everyone else being like, “fucking Wicked is great,” and me knowing people who actually wanted to see it, I wouldn’t have gone, so the point I’m getting across (even though we all know trailers are unreliable, I still love to call them out), the point is the trailer made this movie look horrible, in a world where marketing can make it break a movie, that is disgusting, I’m happy this movie isn’t a victim of poor marketing (the trailer might’ve sucked but you couldn’t escape Wicked otherwise).
So yeah good, I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t like musicals, or if you’re iffy on most musicals but I liked it despite being a bit iffy so, maybe don’t heed that call? No fucking idea but it wasn’t bad, it was good.
Anora should still get the Oscar.
Mikey Madison should still get the Oscar.
