Jon M. Chu was the right man for the job his deep admiration and care for the material shine through every frame, crafting a love letter to Wicked and the generational legacy of Oz.
Bringing Wicked from stage to screen elevates this beloved story in every way. The heartbreak lands deeper through intimate, watery eyed close-ups, the vibrant land of Oz feels like a whimsical playground, and the added empathy for Dr. Dillamond and our furry friends leaves a lasting impression.
The musical numbers are allowed to breathe with the extended runtime, letting their emotional impact and energy shine. Cynthia Erivo is the sturdy anchor here, quietly carrying so much emotional weight without needing to go big or theatrical. And Ariana Grande? She surprised me in the best way. Her comedic timing is sharp, she’s fully present in every moment, and she moves through her choreography like she was born to float as Glinda. Consider me officially on board with her future in acting.
A Wicked film adaptation has been in development limbo for over a decade, but this finished product was well worth the wait and arguably the best-case scenario. In a wide-open year, I’m betting on seeing Wicked soar into the Best Picture race as a serious contender.
