Benjamin Copelin’s review published on Letterboxd:
Ok, this is going to be a discussion on the Sonic Cinematic Universe, but I've already logged Sonic 3 a bunch of times and plan to do so one more time before the movie comes out once we finally get a publicly released trailer. So I'm going to use another Paint Drying Post. As for the news about this cinematic universe...I AM SO FREAKIN EXCITED!!!
🎵 The possibilities are Neverending 🎵
So I'm going to create my own pitch for how I feel like this cinematic universe is going to play out. I am fully aware that my exact pitch will not align with whatever ends up happening. I can certainly see them doing a lot of the stuff I came up with, but by no means is it going to be one for one with anyone else's vision. This is just a fun little topic about how I would do a Sonic Cinematic Universe. I don't have exact dates or order of release for these potential projects, but I do have a lot of ideas.
1. Shadow the Hedgehog spinoff: Aside from movie 4, this is the most likely thing to happen. If Knuckles gets to have his own spinoff, then Shadow definitely will at some point! Heck, he got his own spinoff game, which was a much bigger deal than Knuckles Chaotix. Granted, Shadow's game was a massive disappointment in terms of story and gameplay, but there are still a lot of cool ideas here! It should also be mentioned that the director of the Sonic movies, Jeff Fowler, also worked on the cinematic cutscenes for that game! So I have no doubt that he has some major, exciting plans for him after the third movie! Heck, I'm still speculating that the post-credits scene is going to involve Shadow waking up after being pressumed dead like in Adventure 2, and meeting up with Black Doom which could be a setup for his own spinoff! How awesome would that be? And BTW, I would make this a series instead of a movie so that we can get more time out of this potential story. And this is where we could see the formation of Team Dark, Shadow, Rouge, and E-103 Omega! However, I'm also speculating that Rouge will not only be a major player in movie 3, but she may even appear at the very end of Knuckles. It has been confirmed that there are going to be some loose ends that will lead into movie 3, and I'm also betting that Krysten Ritter's character will not be a human character named Captain Rockwell, but instead be Rouge the Bat. Afterall, Paramount didn't announce that name, reporters have. They were right about Keanu Reeves as Shadow, but I think they were purposely given the wrong information about Kristen Ritter's role so that it wouldn't spoil the surprise! If she is sadly not in movie 3 despite being an adaption of the game where she made her debut, then she would undoubtedly be introduced in the Shadow spinoff, most likely with a far less revealing outfit akin to Sonic Prime. I just feel like the idea of diving deeper into Shadow's character journey and see him as an anti-hero would be amazing to see, especially if they can take the messy storyline where the middle chunk doesn't matter because of the alternate pathways the player can choose only to have a canon ending that rectifies anything that isn't the hero route, and actually make it good. This could be one of those rare instances where we see an video game adaptation actually improve upon the source material...drastically! Also, get Tony Todd to voice Black Doom!
The Chaotix Show: I don't have much to say on this one. I just think it would be so cool to have comedy mystery show involving a goofy yet tough crocodile, and ninja chameleon, and a hyperactive bee with ADHD! I was initially disappointed that Knuckles was teaming up with Wade and not the Chaotix in his series, but the trailers gave me confidence that it will still turn out great. And since we're getting multiple spinoffs without Sonic being the main character, we could still get a series based on this group of detectives, maybe even with Knuckles, or even Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel! Mania made them popular, so it's possible! Also, use the dang theme song for the intro! No other Sonic song sounds like a perfect TV show intro like Team Chaotix's song from Sonic Heroes!
Sonic Riders: If you saw the leaked list of games that Paramount was able to pull from, you'll notice that Sonic Riders is one of them. Granted, I'm sure that they've updated the list since then because of the launch of this cinematic universe, and it has been confirmed that Sonic movie 3 will pull stuff from Shadow the Hedgehog despite not being one of the games listed. But still, while I don't think we'll get a Sonic Riders movie, I do think that we could either see a one-off series or maybe a special that lasts for 30 minutes to an hour. If you remember from my second review of Sonic 2, I said that the hieroglyphics on the owl statue matched that with the hieroglyphics in Sonic Riders, meaning that we could see the Babylon Rogues at some point: Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross! My casting choices are Steve Buscemi as Jet, Zoe Saldana as Wave, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Storm. Imagine seeing Sonic and the Babylon Rogues racing with hoverboards! That would be awesome!
Sonic Movie 4: OK, I know we're getting Adventure 2's story first with Movie 3, but why not do Adventure 1 next? A couple reasons: (1) Chaos would be an awesome villain! With the high quality CGI used in these movies and the Knuckles show, he would look so cool in one of these movies! And that's not even mentioning Perfect Chaos, where it transforms into a giant leviathan monster that floods an entire city! I know Super Sonic will start to become a cliche at this point, but man, would it be amazing to see a cinematic version of the final boss of Adventure 1, complete with Open Your Heart by Crush 40! (2) Knuckles can get even further development in this movie. As much as I love seeing him be part of the Wachowski family with Sonic and Tails, I also admit that it's kinda weird that he isn't as close to the Master Emerald as he is in the games, and that Angel Island isn't even a thing yet. The temple that originally contained it did kinda resemble Angel Island, but it was really just a temple that so happened to have it. Why not have Knuckles go through a journey where he starts to gain the role of Guardian of the Master Emerald and even meets up with the spirit of Tikal the Echidna? I'd love that! (3) Gamma's story. I know that Jim Carrey isn't likely to return after movie 3, but having other people take over and create these robots would make up for it. Especially if it means seeing Gamma go from an antagonist, to a sympathetic anti-hero struggling with the mistreatment of his fellow brothers, and then making the ultimate sacrifice at the end. That would be so satisfying to see, especially since the cutscenes in Adventure 1 have aged like milk.
And finally, Sonic Movies 5 & 6: I want this to be a two-parter! Keep in mind that it has been confirmed that they want this universe to build up to an Avengers level threat! So it would make sense for them to have their own Infinity War and Endgame! This one, in my opinion, should be like a combination of Sonic 06, Sonic Heroes, and an amalgamation of everything that came before! I say 06 because as bad as that game was, the idea of a telekinetic hedgehog named Silver going back in time to prevent his post-apocalyptic future from happening is something that could potentially work. Despite debuting in such an infamous title, Silver has since proven himself as a fan favorite character largely due to the Archie and IDW comics. And Blaze the Cat should definitely be a major player as well! I don't think she should be from the future like Silver, but rather a princess in her own world like how everything else portrays her. Imagine getting to explore her own world and maybe even seeing Marine the Raccoon! And I say Heroes because I think having Metal Sonic be the final boss would be amazing! But if that were to happen, I would like it if previous movies and shows built up to it. We can see Metal Sonic be his normal doppelganger self at first, but then we can start getting glimpses of him rising up to power, becoming a massive threat to the entire universe! We can even have a cliffhanger ending which would then build the stakes to be even higher in the sixth movie! And finally, during the final battle, all of the heroes established in this universe will join in! As for songs, I think they should use What I'm Made of for the climax of the fifth movie before ending with a cliffhanger, and then for the final battle in the sixth movie, they should use I'm Here from Sonic Frontiers! At that point, it should be at least ten years since Sonic Frontiers was released, so that would be the perfect way to end the climax! Also, Tom Holland should voice Silver, and Emily Blunt should voice Blaze.
So those are my ideas. Comment beow and tell me what you think!
