ABrungardt’s review published on Letterboxd:
Quick recap of my Interstellar past. I saw this in 2014 on opening weekend. I love Christopher Nolan, and after The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, & The Prestige, I was prepared to be blown away. Now going into it, I knew I wasn’t the biggest Matthew McConaughey fan, but a time bending sci-fi thriller from one of my favorite directors would certainly be enough to overlook that. Well, I’ll just say that if I had Letterboxd back in 2014, I might’ve given this 3 stars. It wasn’t that I didn’t like… I thought it was fine. It seemed long and bloated and McConaughey didn’t do it for me as I expected. I also thought the ending was drawn out in an ineffective way. Those was no question about the technical merits, but the story and performances just underwhelmed me.
So in the ensuing years, many people who’s opinions I valued told me I was wrong about this one, and I continued to really like the Nolan films that followed, so I had to decide if I was gonna give it another shot or just have it be one of those well regarded films that didn’t click for me.
Well about 2 years ago, I decided that I would try again, but it never seemed to line up, and then I heard it would be rereleased for its 10th anniversary, and knew I had to wait for that. As a film known so much for its scope and scale, if I was gonna rewatch it, I was gonna give it every shot to prove me wrong.
And tonight…
I was proven so fucking wrong, so fucking wrong indeed. Now the ending could still be trimmed by a bit and tightened up a little, but there’s honestly not a single other thing I’d criticize. And since I already spent way too long on why I didn’t like this one in the past, I’ll just let my rating speak for itself and gladly admit I was way off on this one.
