Early Life[]

The hero... sort of

Originally a high school student from Japan, Kyouya Mitsurugi died under undisclosed circumstances, but upon his death he appeared before the beautiful goddess Aqua who totally charmed him. Believing himself to be the "chosen one" when she tasked him with defeating the Devil King terrorising the Parallel World, Mitsurugi was gifted with the Cursed Sword Gram for his exclusive use, and subsequently got reincarnated into the Parallel World. Quickly rising to become a Swordmaster through the help of his cheat item, by the time Mitsurugi met Kazuma, he had already made a name for himself as a well-regarded hero and adventurer, who led a party that apart from him consisted of Cremea and Fio.[1] Officially ranked the third most powerful adventurer by the Kingdom of Belzerg,[2] Mitsurugi also became familiar with Iris the first princess of the kingdom.[3]

School Days Arc[]

Hoping to find a mage to join his party, Mitsurugi travelled to the Crimson Demon Village where Dodonko caught sight of him,[4] though he was unable to find a suitable candidate from those responding to his recruitment poster at the inn, such as Komekko to whom he gave lots of food. Anyhow having his belief in himself as the chosen hero reincarnated for vanquishing the Devil King reinforced when the chuunibyou villagers cheered his "cool" background story, before he became impressed after Komekko told of Bukkororii and his guerilla force protecting the village from the Devil King's Army,[5] Mitsurugi left the village several days later, though not before receiving a prophecy from Soketto telling him of his duty to protect a priest of the Axis Order who would change the fate of the world.[6]

Journey to Axel Arc[]

Making his way to Arcanletia to seek the priest of the prophecy, Mitsurugi was touring before the main cathedral when he ran into Cecily, who pestered him into feeding and pampering her for life.[6] Initially running away from the demented Priest, he eventually gave in and treated Cecily to meals, though a few days later he left the city.[7]

Irregular of Axel Arc[]

Mitsurugi in hopes of recruiting a mage and a priest later took his party back to the Guild at Axel, where he was soon taunted over his harem by a drunken Dust, though the issue was solved once he accepted Dust's challenge and quickly beat up the delinquent adventurer.[8]

Some weeks later, he and his party took part in the hunting squadron organised by the Guild for defeating a powerful Demon sighted in the nearby forest. Yet as Mitsurugi led the squadron in the vanguard, he was wounded by a surprise attack from Host. The Swordmaster still managed to chop off one of Host's wings and give the rest of the vanguard the opening to escape, before he himself had to be evacuated by Fio and Cremea back to the city, where he spent the next few days recuperating.[9]

Beginner Adventurer Arc[]

One day, Mitsurugi found Dust sexually harassing Cremea and Fio again, at which he stepped forth to scare the unrepentant delinquent away.[10] He afterwards took his party for a quest to eliminate an Ancient Dragon,[11] yet upon their triumphant return to Axel, Mitsurugi witnessed the horrifying sight of Aqua being carted through the city in a cage. Hurriedly snapping open the cage bars to free his beloved goddess, who initially could remember neither him nor his name, he soon learned about how Kazuma Satou had wished to bring her into this world as his cheat item. Following an angry confrontation with Kazuma because he had been mistreating his goddess, the Swordmaster offered to have Aqua as well as Megumin and Darkness join his party instead, only to have the three girls insist on staying in Kazuma's party. Undeterred, Mitsurugi issued a challenge to Kazuma using Aqua as wager while promising to give anything the Adventurer wanted should he win. He was however barely prepared to counter Kazuma's underhanded tactics, before having Gram Stolen out of his hands and getting knocked out.[1]

Waking up to hear from Cremea and Fio how Kazuma had taken Gram, Mitsurugi went asking for information about his fellow reincarnate, and heard from Chris how the scum was notorious for sexually harassing women, especially through stealing their panties. He accordingly took his party to the Guild for confronting Kazuma, only to be punched by Aqua's God Blow and forced to pay her the reparation charges for the broken cage that she got penalised for. Next begging to have Gram returned to him, Mitsurugi discovered to his horror that Kazuma had already sold off the cursed sword, and so frantically ran off to look for it.[1]

While anxiously running around the city, he was approached by Dust and Rin, with the former smugly offering to divulge where the cursed sword was if paid 5 million eris. Too desperate to argue, the rich Swordmaster promptly handed over the money, and was directed to a storage space outside the city, where he did indeed retrieve his sword.[10]

Deep Winter Arc[]

When the Destroyer headed towards Axel, Mitsurugi and his party took part in the Guild meeting discussing the city's defence[12] (though in the anime, during that period he was working alongside his party in a faraway land)[13].

Late Winter Arc[]

After being requested by Sena to testify at Kazuma's treason trial, during which he confirmed the Stealing of Gram but got dismissed before he could clarify how he had picked the fight,[14] Mitsurugi one day heard a rumour around town about Aqua being in danger out in the mountains, prompting him to hurry towards the location alone. On the way, he was approached by a village girl who tearfully begged for him to take out the Orcs terrorising her village. Unable to resist the plea, Mitsurugi went ahead and eliminated all of the Orcs, yet after he left the scene before turning back, the Swordmaster saw Dust and the village girl rummaging around as if they had been working together. Upon confronting the pair who had set him up for explanations, the panicked Dust pulled out the girl's tail to reveal her identity as the Loli Succubus, while the Loli Succubus blurted out that Dust had swindled him earlier on when selling him Gram back in exchange for a fortune. Enraged, the Swordmaster drew his sword for teaching the pair a lesson, only to have them escape when Dust distracted him by lifting the Loli Succubus' skirt and making him shut his eyes. Mitsurugi afterwards rushed back to Axel, and claimed the rewards for the quest against the Orcs before Dust could, though the following night Cremea and Fio got him so drunk he fell into a dreamless sleep.[15]

Early Spring Arc[]

Chancing upon Kazuma and Ran chatting at the Guild one time, Mitsurugi was eagerly approached by the latter who was a fan of him, only to have the jealous Kazuma reiterate the Swordmaster's humiliating defeat at his hands.[16]

Magical Stones Arc[]

While dining with his party at the Guild one night, Mitsurugi overhead Kazuma's party in addition to Chris, who were sitting next to them, loudly discussing a valuable magical stone that they had found as well as how they planned to search for other specimens of it in various dungeons. Hoping to give Aqua a pleasant surprise, the following day he led his party into Keele's Dungeon in hopes of discovering another magical stone. During the search, they ran into Kazuma's party, and despite Aqua and Kazuma both getting his name wrong again, Mitsurugi for the sake of Aqua temporarily parted ways with Cremea and Fio, so that he could accompany his goddess on their quest for the Devil-Sealing Magical Stones.[17]

Following many adventures and battles alongside Kazuma, Mitsurugi joined him in defending Axel from the attack of the Imitation Dragon, where he in the final stages unleashed Rune of Saber under Kazuma's instructions to chop off one of the rampaging monster's heads.[18] Later reuniting with Cremea and Fio, Mitsurugi joined the other adventurers in celebrating their victory at the Guild.[19]

Cursed Relic Arc[]

When following Kazuma's party as well as Chris and Yunyun on a request by Lundberg to investigate an ancient relic discovered at the research facility beneath his mansion, Mitsurugi got caught in its defence response in the form of Level Drain, which reduced them all to Level 1 rookies with no Skills. He managed to escape being buried alive as a result of Megumin's Explosion, and after Kazuma got charged with treason by Sena which forced him to help repair the damaged relic, Mitsurugi tagged along to the meeting with Lundberg for discussing the terms of pardon, where Gram got confiscated as part of Kazuma's bail terms. He subsequently followed Aqua who got dragged outside by Darkness for interrupting Rav, though later returned to hear the researcher explain of how he needed some replacement parts only found in dungeons in order to repair the relic, and volunteered to go scout out the depths of the snowfield forest, since investigations indicated a dungeon containing one of the parts was located there.[20]

Arriving in the area which was lethally frigid due to being overrun by Snow Sprites, Mitsurugi used a Heat Ring obtained during his previous adventurers for warding off the cold, before fighting to level himself back up, while taking care to stay away from the Winter Shogun. He became impatient several weeks later when Kazuma's party didn't show up, and thus having finished his investigations at the forest as well as the nearby villages, Mitsurugi headed into a mountain of ice situated deep in the forest, where he confirmed the existence of the Snow Sprites' boss, which according to Rav had generated inside it an Eternal Ice Crystal required for the relic's repair. Kazuma's party eventually made their way into the ice mountain, so after Mitsurugi rendezvoused with them both sides exchanged tidings. But upon learning to his anger that Kazuma had only bought Aqua an inferior Hot Ring for warding off the cold, Mitsurugi offered to give her his Heat Ring while Kazuma tried to stop him from spoiling her, resulting in a tussle where Aqua slipped and slid deeper into the ice cavern. Subsequent to them finding Aqua and Mitsurugi joining in with the party, he suggested they head back to Axel for preparations.[21]

Upon them returning to the ice mountain where Mitsurugi acted as the guide, Aqua again slipped and slid out of the party to end up further ahead, prompting Mitsurugi to frantically lead the effort for collecting her. After they found the remains of an adventurer, Mitsurugi protested Kazuma's rummaging of the deceased's luggage, though once they discovered how that adventurer's companion who was carrying ice dissolvent had fallen into a crevice, the Swordmaster led the investigations of several crevices in the vicinity, before directing Kazuma to descend and retrieve the ice dissolvent from its owner's remains subsequent to coming across the right one. When the party reached the end of the dungeon only find the way back blocked by a gigantic Big Snow Sprite, he and Kazuma had to drag a delighted Darkness who got squashed under its enormous bulk free, then became impressed when Aqua discovered how the Snow Sprites could be burned out of the Big Snow Sprite by the Salamander Megumin had caught. Mitsurugi proceeded with helping the others defeat the Big Snow Sprite, and after it scattered into regular Snow Sprites picked out the Eternal Ice Crystal Rav had requested so that they could get Lundberg to pardon Kazuma, though not before calling everybody to flee from the wrathful Winter Shogun.[22]

At some point during the period, Mitsurugi was requested by the Guild to mentor rookie adventurers, and became displeased to find Kazuma also working as a lecturer. While Mitsurugi during one session lectured the class at the neighbourhood ruins, he got appalled by Kazuma stringing up a hammock to take a nap. Upon indignantly asking him a question on what to do when running into Beginner's Banes, however, Mitsurugi was surprised by the groggy Kazuma giving the correct answer, which advised the class to find somewhere to hide from confrontation, and grudgingly admitted how the advice uttered when half-asleep had made an impact on the rookie adventurers. Later at the final mentoring session, Mitsurugi stopped Kazuma from shirking and dragged him to the field training at the neighbourhood ruins, where the rookies were instructed to hunt Goblins in pairs, yet to their shock a Veteran's Bane soon appeared. After managing to defeat the monster as well as protect the rookies thanks to Kazuma's help, Mitsurugi temporarily accepted him being the one to stay beside Aqua.[23]

Following many adventures and battles alongside Kazuma, and at some point retrieving Gram after the scuttling of Guardian Sword,[24] Mitsurugi joined him in defending Axel from the attack of a supergiant Wallavy, first task being luring the monster into a trap. Helping to buy some time against Wallavy after battling its final mutation, he assisted with sweeping aside Wallavy's multiple smaller clones so that Kazuma and Aqua could go destroy its core.[25] Several days later, when all the adventurers who had fought in the battle were drinking at the Guild in celebration, Mitsurugi enjoyed the delicious warabi mochi Aqua had cut out from Wallavy.[26]

Late Spring Arc[]

Temporarily parting ways with Cremea and Fio so they could go leveling up at a neighbouring country without him interfering, Mitsurugi stayed behind at Belzerg's royal capital, and passed his days by helping the city's defenders fight off attacks from the Devil King's Army. He became overjoyed one day when catching sight of Aqua as she shopped with Kazuma, though Kazuma's refusal to get his name right nor have a rematch, in addition to Aqua's inability to remember him, made the Swordmaster exasperated. Mitsurugi anyhow took them to a coffee shop, where he started out by gifting Aqua a ring he had bought for her. Yet before he could explain how that ring, which was initially too small for Aqua's finger, can magically resize, Aqua performed a trick to make the ring disappear for good, much to Mitsurugi's dismay. The Swordmaster next warned Kazuma of how the Devil King expressed interest in a party hailing from Axel for their connection with the defeat of Beldia, Vanir, and Sylvia, then advised him to take good care of Aqua, before leaving with a transformable figure of Eris folded from napkins that his goddess had gifted him.[27]

Having distinguished himself in a battle against an attack by the Devil King's Army that night, Mitsurugi on the following day got invited to attend a victory banquet at the royal castle. When running into Iris along with Claire in one of the castle's hallways, he reiterated his duty to protect the kingdom and princess, whose head he gently patted, only to be shocked when an indignant Iris ordered his execution for insolence,[3] before she had him pardoned[28] but also commanded him to scram. The Swordmaster anyhow attended the banquet afterwards, where he once again received praises from crowds of attendees especially the women.[3]

Mitsurugi that night was granted permission to stay at the royal castle as a guest of honour, but got woken hours later by an alarm signaling of intruders. Valiantly joining Claire and Rain alongside a band of knights on the second-highest floor in wait of the unstoppable Silver-Haired Thief Brigade heading for the princess' bedroom at the top floor, the Swordmaster chose to take on the masked man while letting the others deal with the silver-haired boy. Having carried many items on him to minimise the chances of the sheathed Gram being Stolen again ever since his defeat at the hands of Kazuma, Mitsurugi didn't think much of the masked man seemingly attempting the same Thief skill, only to discover that his opponent had actually Frozen Gram into its sheath. Distracted by his inability to readily draw the cursed sword, he couldn't react when the masked man Created Water into his mouth and nose before casting Freeze. Unable to breathe until Rain later thawed the ice, the collapsed Mitsurugi could only flail on the floor as the thieves rushed past.[29]
(In the anime, Mitsurugi cut through the Wire Trap blocking castle reinforcements to confront the thieves, whom the forces led by Claire and Rain were hard pressed against. After challenging the masked man only to have Gram rendered undrawable, the Swordmaster slipped on the Frozen floor right to the masked man's feet, where he had Created Water forced into his mouth until he became waterlogged inside out, requiring Claire and Rain's help before he could rejoin the fight. Mitsurugi soon followed Claire to Iris' bedroom where Darkness was facing off against the thieves, though he later could only watch them make their escape)[30]

Mid Summer Arc[]

Because of Kazuma's party recently failing too many quests, at the behest of the Guild, Mitsurugi became one of the lecturers for their retraining at the seaside, which he at the start had to stop them from shirking before hearing the girls' scathing evaluations of him, though he anyhow bowed to Aqua's pestering and let her run off the play in the sea.[31]

Mitsurugi who was in charge of lecturing combat skills ended up failing to persuade Aqua into stopping her frolicking and returning to the retraining, therefore he had the others perform a jog with him for testing their physical capabilities, all the while ignoring Kazuma's protests over him letting Aqua play in the sea. He next saw Kazuma's running out of breathe within minutes and even losing to Megumin as attempts to shirk retraining, until a look at the Adventurer's dismal stats convinced him otherwise, so Mitsurugi out of sympathy cut the jog short. Proceeding to have Kazuma and Darkness attack him with wooden swords, he agreed to conclude his lecturing if Kazuma was able to land a hit on him. Surprised to see Darkness' surprise attack unable to hit his immobile form, the Swordmaster next easily blocked Kazuma's flurry of attacks, only to hear him talk of Aqua drowning. Frantically turning his attention towards Aqua who was actually happily swimming, he took a surprise hit from Kazuma, then heard him and Darkness point out his weaknesses, which entailed susceptibility to sneak attacks and excessive infatuation with Aqua. Despite still unwilling to accept his loss, the derogatory comments from the spectators eventually forced him to let Kazuma pass the lecture.[32]

After Aqua was caught in the explosion of some overloaded magical stones that Megumin threw into the sea during Yunyun's lecture, Mitsurugi quickly rushed to rescue his goddess.[33] He also prepared to support the party when Wiz had them fight sea monsters, but was surprised to see the shopkeeper's vial attract a huge Kraken. As the monster groped Darkness whom it had captured with its tentacles, Mitsurugi forced Kazuma who thought of leaving into using his bow. The Swordmaster next wielded Gram to chop off the tentacles holding Darkness before offering his coat for covering her naked body, only to be puzzled by her and Kazuma's disappointment. He anyways declared determination to fight alongside the others, before being interrupted by Megumin's uncontrolled Explosion.[34]

Miraculously surviving the catastrophe that eradicated the monsters and left him laying immobile, Mitsurugi lauded Aqua for her efforts and allowed her to go home, then had an argument with Kazuma over his spoiling of the goddess and the other reincarnate repeatedly getting his name wrong. Mitsurugi was next shocked by Aqua trying to fish by Purifying the whole sea, though in his immobility he could do nothing to stop Aqua from ruining the ecosystem.[35]

Late Summer Arc[]

Hearing of a key fort defending the royal capital against the Devil King's Army imperiled by the attacks from a Devil King's General, Mitsurugi and his party headed over to reinforce the defenders. Yet Wolbach's daily hit-and-run tactics utilising Explosions that steadily eroded the fort walls was something even he couldn't tackle, prompting him to have Cremea and Fio retreat to the safety of the royal capital. Mitsurugi was afterwards surprised to see Kazuma and Aqua also arriving as reinforcements, and so showed the clueless pair the crumbling walls as an explanation of Wolbach's capabilities. Following the Dark God's Explosion for that day, he at the struck section explained to the approaching Kazuma's gang how they were too late to counterattack the fled Wolbach.[36] Yet days later he too was awed by the way Aqua miraculously undid the damage on the walls and even began reinforcing them.[37]
