- Harry Potter: "But there aren't wild dragons in Britain?"
- Ron Weasley: "Of course there are. Common Welsh Green and Hebridean Blacks. The Ministry of Magic has a job hushing them up, I can tell you. Our lot have to keep putting spells on Muggles who’ve spotted them, to make them forget."
- — Dragons indigenous to Great Britain[src]
The Common Welsh Green, or just Welsh Green, was a dragon native to Wales. It nested in the higher mountain regions, where a reservation had been set up for it. It was a green dragon with a distinctive, musical roar.[1]
Traits[]
This dragon was a relatively subdued breed (except for the rare exception of the Ilfracombe Incident). It preferred to prey mainly on sheep and other small mammals and to avoid human contact altogether. The Welsh Green's roar was rather distinctive and somewhat melodious, and it issued its fire in narrow jets. The eggs of the Common Welsh Green were earthy brown, flecked with green.[1]
History[]
1666[]
It is possible that a young Common Welsh Green may have been the actual cause of the Great Fire of London.[3]
20th century[]
The Ilfracombe Incident occurred in 1932, when a rogue Common Welsh Green dragon attacked a group of sunbathers at Ilfracombe, in Devon, England. The attack was thwarted by the Toke wizarding family, who proceeded to cast the largest group of Memory Charms seen in the twentieth century. The Toke family were subsequently awarded the Order of Merlin First Class, for their heroism and quick thinking.[1]
There existed a Common Welsh Green at the Magical Creatures Reserve during the 1980s. Jacob's sibling and Penny Haywood bonded with it and collected dragon dung for fertiliser.[4] A Common Welsh Green attacked several Muggles in Kenilworth in Southwest England during the 1990–1991 school year. Jacob's sibling investigated this case with the Ministry, and the dragon was eventually captured and sent to its new home.[5]
Fleur Delacour faced this breed of dragon for the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament in 1994. She enchanted the creature into a magical slumber to retrieve her golden egg. The spell was only partly successful and the dragon attacked, setting Fleur's skirt on fire.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, the Welsh Green is the second dragon seen. It blocks your way by knocking its tail towards the ground. You have to play music on a xylophone in the order that the dragon sings to make it fall asleep.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (video game), it is a Welsh Green that is used to guard the Lestrange Vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank instead of an Ukrainian Ironbelly as specified in the film. Instead of metallic grey as the Ironbelly is, the Welsh Green has become pale because of no sunlight, as it is originally green.
- Unlike the other dragons from the First Task which are shown in the 'modern' wyvern design, the Common Welsh Green selected by Fleur is depicted in the classic dragon design with four legs.
- In the German translation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander says that the Common Welsh Green has brown and green eyes instead of eggs.
- Ironically the real Welsh Dragon (the Y Ddraig Goch, literally translated as the Red Dragon), which is the national animal of Wales and is universally depicted on all of their flags, is traditionally depicted as red.
