- "Once believed to be a type of dragon, this bird—reptile hybrid has found its way onto the pages of many a Muggle newspaper."
- — Description[src]
The Snallygaster was a dragon-like magical beast known to exist in the New World. It had been featured in many Muggle newspapers and was so well-known that it competed with the Loch Ness Monster.[1]
Description[]
The part-bird, part-reptile was a distant relative of the Occamy. It could not breathe fire unlike the dragon, but used fangs made of serrated steel to slice through its prey. It was naturally curious and had a bulletproof hide. Snallygaster heartstrings could be used as wand cores.[1]
History[]
Around 1620, Isolt Sayre and the Pukwudgie, William took trips together to observe these creatures and fought a Snallygaster. Snallygaster heartstrings can be used as a wand core, as evidenced by Isolt Sayre and James Steward when they created wands for early Ilvermorny students.[2]
Its natural curiosity, coupled with a bulletproof hide has led it to repeatedly threaten the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. The Snallygaster has appeared in Muggle newspapers so often that it competes with the Loch Ness Monster for the title of 'Most Publicity-Hungry Beast.' Starting in 1949, the Snallygaster Protection League has been stationed in Maryland to Obliviate Muggles who see it.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The snallygaster is a mythical creature believed to exist in the vicinity of Maryland in the United States of America. Its reputation for appearing in Muggle news reports may refer to hoax perpetrated in 1909 by a local newspaper that grew popular enough to elicit responses from the Smithsonian Institution and U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
