The Romanian Dragon Sanctuary was the largest preservation area set aside for the protection and study of dragons. Located in Romania, it was established by Harvey Ridgebit sometime before his death in 1973.
History[]
In the 1989–1990 school year, William Weasley was given an assignment from Gringotts to retrieve a fake dragon egg from this sanctuary. He was joined by a few Hogwarts students, including his younger brother Charlie Weasley.[4] Later in the year, Charlie took Rubeus Hagrid to visit, bringing back cartfulls of dragon dung for Hagrid's pumpkin patch.[5]
During the 1990–1991 school year, Alastor Moody and Jacob's sibling travelled to this sanctuary, once they had learnt that the fugitive Dark wizard Burke was hiding there.
Burke wished to take the claws from a Chinese Fireball in order for 'R' to brew a special potion with. Jacob's sibling waved at the dragon to fly away, which it did before their confrontation. After Jacob's sibling told him not to hurt the dragon, Burke fired a fiery spell at them, and also knocked over Moody with a spell, with Jacob's sibling knocking Burke over with the Banishing Charm. Jacob's sibling then defeated him a duel, before Moody bound him with the Incarcerous Spell and silenced him, before taking him to Azkaban.[6]
In 1991, after graduating from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Charles Weasley travelled to Romania to work and further study dragons at this sanctuary. This sanctuary was the largest of its kind in the world. In 1992, Charlie took the Norwegian Ridgeback Norbert (later renamed Norberta) to the sanctuary as a favour to brother Ron and Rubeus Hagrid, who was keeping the dragon illegally in his hut in the grounds of Hogwarts.[7] In 1994, the sanctuary supplied four dragons for use in the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.[8]
