Pushing Mask
Summons a large oni mask in front of it before pushing it forward to deal 100% ATK as Anemo DMG.
Exploding Mask
Summons a large oni mask at the player's position that swirls uncontrollably before exploding, dealing 100% ATK as Cryo DMG.
Dash
Performs up to 5 short dashes, creating afterimages behind itself to approach the player.
Taunt
The Maguu Kenki will clench and raise its fist to taunt its opponent if they are far away from it after an attack. It is vulnerable to attacks while in this state.

Above 71% HP[]

Ichimonji

At 71% HP or Lower[]

After reaching 71% of Max HP, Maguu Kenki will immediately perform Dual Sword Burst, signifying a phase transition. During the phase transition attack, it cannot be damaged past 70% of its Max HP. Afterwards, Maguu Kenki will start utilizing the following enhanced attacks:

Dual Sword Burst
Description
Summons an additional sword, charging up before slamming the ground for a wide AoE, dealing 80% ATK as both Anemo DMG and Cryo DMG.

Strategy
Dash i-frame as soon as Maguu Kenki enters downward motion, or use skills that elevate the player off the ground to avoid DMG.

Blustering Blade
Performs a slash, sending a wind blade towards the player's current location, dealing 50% ATK as Anemo DMG. The single-slash version of this attack is only used to follow up Iai: Shadowrush or Shadowsword: Ichimonji when certain conditions are met.
Iai: Shadowrush (Enhanced)
Enters Iai stance and rushes toward the player while drawing its sword, dealing 60% ATK as Anemo DMG.
  • If the player is 7 m or farther from the Maguu Kenki after the initial attack, follows up with Blustering Blade.
  • If the player is less than 7 m from the Maguu Kenki after the initial attack, follows up with the Cryo version of Shadowsword: Ichimonji and Pushing Mask.
Shadowsword: Ichimonji
Maguu Kenki and a Shadowsword each performs up to 3 consecutive sword slashes at the player. With each slash, the Maguu Kenki deals 50% ATK as Anemo DMG while the Shadowsword deals 30% ATK as Anemo DMG or Cryo DMG.
  • If the player runs 7 m or farther away from the Maguu Kenki, performs 2 consecutive slashes and a follow-up attack.
    • If the Shadowsword is Anemo, Maguu Kenki may follow up with Blustering Blade.
    • If the Shadowsword is Cryo, Maguu Kenki may follow up with Iai: Shadowrush.
    • If Shadowsword: Ichimonji is used as a follow up to Iai: Shadowrush, follows up with Pushing Mask.
  • If the Shadowsword is Anemo and the player runs 7 m or farther away before the 2nd slash, also follows up with Iai: Shadowrush.
Shadowsword: Pseudo Tengu Sweeper
  • Variant 1: Enters Iai stance and charges, dragging the player into its area of effect, before quickly slashing around itself, dealing 100% ATK as Anemo DMG. The Shadowsword then appears from Maguu Kenki and slashes over a larger ring-shaped area, dealing 100% ATK as Cryo DMG.
  • Variant 2: Teleports and leaves a Cryo Shadowsword in its original location. Maguu Kenki and the Shadowsword charge simultaneously before quickly slashing around themselves. Maguu Kenki will also draw nearby players into its area of effect. Then, both will slash simultaneously around themselves. Maguu Kenki itself will deal 100% ATK as Anemo DMG while the Shadowsword deals 60% ATK as Cryo DMG over a much larger area. This attack will only be used if the Maguu Kenki is hit while not performing an attack.
Shadowsword: Blustering Blade
Teleports and leaves an Anemo Shadowsword in its original location. The Shadowsword performs a single Blustering Blade slash before Maguu Kenki performs 3 or 4 Blustering Blade slashes in quick succession at the player.

AI Logic[]

    • The ability is not on cooldown
    • The target is within the range and angle required by the ability
    • The ability has the highest priority out of all that meet the previous 2 conditions
      • A lower priority number indicates a higher priority.
      • If multiple abilities share the highest priority, one will be chosen at random.

Dual Sword Burst
Summons an additional sword, charging up before slamming the ground for a wide AoE, dealing 80% ATK as both Anemo DMG and Cryo DMG. This attack is only used in Pro difficulty.
Pseudo Tengu Sweeper
Maguu Kengou has a Fury meter that fills by 1 point when hit by the player's attacks.
  • The Fury meter's maximum will change depending on the difficulty:
    • Normal: 8 points
    • Hard: 12 points
    • Pro: 20 points
  • In Pro difficulty only, if the player stops hitting Maguu Kengou for 5 seconds, the Fury meter will deplete by 3 points every 3s.

If the Fury meter reaches its maximum, enters Iai stance and charges, dragging the player into its area of effect, before quickly slashing around itself, dealing 100% ATK as Anemo DMG. The Shadowsword appears close to Maguu Kengou and slashes over a larger area, dealing 100% ATK as Cryo DMG.

Stunned
After being hit by a blade wave from the player's Honed Technique "Ferocious Combo Lashes", becomes stunned for 8 seconds.

Strategy[]

While Maguu Kenki's high mobility in its 2nd phase may hinder the player's ability to deal DMG, the following methods can be used to restrict it:

  • The 2nd variant of the Shadowsword: Pseudo Tengu Sweeper attack, which teleports Maguu Kenki away from the player, is only triggered if the player attacks it while it is idle. The player can avoid this attack entirely by only attacking Maguu Kenki while it is already performing an attack. Additionally, deployed objects such as Guoba and Frostflake Seki no To also will not trigger this attack.
  • Domain barriers in the Spiral Abyss as well as Geo barriers created by Geo Traveler's Elemental Burst can be used to block Maguu Kenki's path and reduce its teleport distance.
  • Shadowsword: Pseudo Tengu Sweeper can also be used to control the direction of Maguu Kenki's teleportation in the player's favor, such as forcing it to teleport towards an obstacle, as this attack will always teleport Maguu Kenki away from the player.
  • Shadowsword: Blustering Blade is sometimes used as an emergency return-to-spawn-point measure if Maguu Kenki is too far from its starting location. Avoid roaming too far from the boss's spawn point to reduce the likelihood of this attack, or anticipate Maguu Kenki's teleport direction when it occurs as it will always teleport back to its spawn point.

Trivia[]

  • The Maguu Kenki in the Golden Apple Archipelago's title is Humanoid Automaton of Unknown Origin.
  • Maguu Kenki is the "General" mentioned in the Conch Retrospection series "My Hero", from the Echoing Tales event. During Dodo-King of the Sea: Lying in Wait, it is suggested that it may have defended the inhabitants of the islands from hilichurls.[1]
  • True to its name, Maguu Kenki appears to have puppet strings attached to various parts of its body.
  • The Maguu Kenki on the Golden Apple Archipelago was stolen by Ako Domeki's crew, who had it with them when they got shipwrecked on the Golden Apple Archipelago 500 years ago.
  • Despite being released in Version 1.6, Maguu Kenki did not appear in the "Living Beings" section of the Archive until Version 2.0 when Inazuma was released. The boss could not be reviewed even if the player had defeated it before in the Golden Apple Archipelago, until the player found and defeated it in Inazuma.
  • Maguu Kenki's sword arts, and model, are based off Iwakura Michihiro's, which would essentially make them "practitioners" of the Iwakura Clan.
  • The Maguu Kenki is the only Automaton boss that drops gems corresponding to its elements.
  • In Version 2.4, the floating blue particles usually seen in Wuwang Hill are no longer present inside the area where the Maguu Kenki resides.

Notes[]

  1. This version of Shadowsword: Blustering Blade only triggers when far from spawn location and will always teleport the Maguu Kenki towards spawn. It is likely a measure put in place to prevent the Maguu Kenki from moving out of its arena and resetting aggro.
  2. Only triggers upon being hit.
