Toyota formally introduced the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid to the Canadian market mid-January, spilling details on the model previously known as the “Prius Prime.” The new naming structure also applies to the RAV4, with the old RAV4 Prime henceforth renamed the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Starting at $40,050 (a $500 jump from the 2024 model year) the plug-in hybrid offers an all-electric driving range of up to 72 kilometres; increased safety technologies; and refined interior options across three trim levels.

The updated name clearly indicates Toyota’s ongoing investments in its electrification strategy. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid includes a new “PHEV” rear badge, distinguishing it from Toyota’s electrified vehicles, which span hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electrics, and hydrogen fuel cells.

Toyota Canada has made the Prius Plug-in Hybrid available in three trims:

  • SE: Priced at $40,050, this entry-level trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, heated fabric seats, and wireless smartphone integration;
  • XSE: Starting at $44,785, it upgrades to a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Softex upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a glass roof; and
  • XSE Premium: At $48,535, it features premium additions such as an eight-speaker JBL audio system, panoramic view monitor, and Advanced Park system.

The vehicle is powered by a 2.0-litre gasoline engine paired with an electric motor-generator system. This combination delivers 220 system horsepower, routed through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). With an estimated fuel efficiency of 1.8 Le/100 km, or about 4.5 L/100 km for the base SE model, it is among the most fuel-efficient mass-production vehicles for sale today.

A large 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery enables the Prius Plug-in Hybrid to operate in electric-only mode for up to 72 km (45 miles). The battery can be fully recharged in as little as four hours, providing flexibility for drivers with access to home or public charging. The vehicle seamlessly transitions to a gas-electric hybrid system when charging is unavailable to eliminate range concerns.

Aerodynamically designed with a 0.27 coefficient of drag, the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid features a low and wide body that enhances both efficiency and aesthetics. Inside, the vehicle provides room for up to five passengers and is equipped with advanced technology. All models come standard with Toyota Multimedia, a system offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; as well as Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the brand’s comprehensive suite of active safety features.

The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is now available at Toyota dealerships nationwide.
