Cadillac

Cadillac Overview

The premier division of General Motors may be considered the pinnacle of American luxury today, but its origins emerged from the ashes of a competitor.

In 1902, Henry Ford’s second attempt at founding an automotive company, the Henry Ford Company, dissolved amid disagreements between Ford and his investors. Henry M. Leland, principal of the machine shop Leland & Faulconer, was asked to appraise the company’s manufacturing facilities and equipment to prepare for liquidation. Leland convinced the financial backers orchestrating the liquidation to continue building automobiles at the facility, this time using Leland-designed engines. Thus, the Cadillac Automobile Company was founded: it was named after Antoine de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, the French explorer who established the city of Detroit, and its logo was styled after his coat of arms. This company and Leland’s machine shop merged in 1905 to become the Cadillac Motor Company. Leland sold Cadillac to General Motors in 1909 and stayed on as an executive, but he later left amid a dispute with GM founder William C. Durant over whether to build military equipment during World War I. In 1917, Leland founded the Lincoln Motor Company, which today remains Cadillac’s principal American competitor.

From the beginning, precision craftsmanship was a Cadillac selling point and the marque quickly earned a reputation for reliability and innovation. It became the first automaker to mass-produce a fully enclosed car, the first to sell a car with an electric starter instead of a manual crank starter, and the first to use interchangeable parts in manufacturing. In 1909, Cadillac was purchased by General Motors, and the brand has been the company’s luxury torchbearer ever since.

Early innovations included the first V16 engine, shatterproof glass, the first all-steel roof, and joining Oldsmobile as being among the first marques to offer a fully automatic transmission.

Cadillac enjoyed several decades of heyday from the 1940s through to the ‘70s, when iconic tail fins and emphatically long hoods gave way to downsizing brought on by the 1970s energy crisis. Tougher times ensued in the 1980s and ‘90s, when vehicles like the failed Cimarron compact car left outsiders wondering whether Cadillac had lost its way. With the launch of the Cadillac Escalade large SUV in 1999, the brand caught the attention of the American entertainment industry’s high rollers and slowly entered a renaissance.

Today, the brand’s line-up is highlighted by performance sedans, a full array of SUVS, and the flagship Lyriq EV that is ushering in a new era of electrification for General Motors. While current models are built in either the U.S. or China, Cadillac vehicles were assembled by General Motors of Canada as far back as the 1920s, and the now-discontinued Cadillac XTS was one of the final GM vehicles to roll down the line at Oshawa Assembly before it was closed and retooled to produce Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Competitors

Rivals will be found in vehicles like the Lexus UX, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. A case can also be made for the Lincoln Corsair since both hail from Detroit and likely appeal to the same type of customer.

What’s new with the Cadillac XT4 for 2025?

Not much, since GM is pulling the plug on it. Trim levels have been axed, meaning Premium Luxury is now the starting point. A so-called Active Safety Package with gear like adaptive cruise control and a surround view camera is now standard on the Premium Luxury and Sport trims.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Performance

Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are part of the deal, helping the XT4 accelerate to highway speeds in about 7.5 seconds. This is not overly fleet-of-foot compared to its direct competitors.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Efficiency

Fuel economy isn’t anything to write home about, particularly when viewed against other models in its class. Economy in the city is rated by the feds at 10.4 L/100km, 8.3 on the highway, and 9.5 overall.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Safety

All models now come with an Active Safety Package including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and helpful high-def surround vision camera system. Rear pedestrian alert and enhanced automatic emergency braking plus reverse automatic braking and also help ward off calamity.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Reliability

Consumer Reports predicts a 2-of-5 score for reliability with this model, citing potential issues with various systems. However, the bulk of that prediction is predicated on data collected by CR for other Cadillac models where the brand itself sits near the bottom (21 of 22 competitive brands) for the newest three model years from the latest CR member survey.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Interior

This model is wider than many of its competitors, making good use of its footprint and creating a better sense of space than its subcompact dimensions might suggest. Last year’s overhaul brought Escalade-like infotainment screens measuring a vast 33 inches, excellent digital real estate, and touches like an illuminated Cadillac badge on the back of the gauge cluster which shows off the brand whilst approaching the car at night. Yes, this stuff matters.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Dimensions

Overall length is 180.9 inches or 4,595 millimetres on a body width of 76.7 inches or 1,948 mm. The latter measure of roughly 2 metres genuinely helps the feel of interior spaciousness. Total height is 64.1 inches (1,628 mm) though there is just 6.8 inches of ground clearance.

    2025 Cadillac XT4 Canadian Pricing

With an impending date with the Grim Reaper not far away, there are only two trims from which to choose in the 2025 XT4 – both of which are exactly the same price. Customers will be looking at $48,899 for the Equinox Plus XT4 though GM’s hefty freight charges instantly push that over 50 grand. Checking every option box can push the price to ridiculous levels – beyond $60,000 in fact – for a subcompact four-banger Caddy. We recommend restraint and watching for deep discounts now the model is on death’s door.

    2025 Cadillac CT4 Safety

Neither the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has cracked up a CT4 in crash testing. Standard driver-assist technologies include emergency front braking, high-definition rear camera, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safety seat alert, teen driver settings, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and rear park assist. Upper trims can add OnStar and Connected Services plans, front and rear parking assist, emergency reverse braking, and available panoramic camera. Super Cruise hands-free driving assist is available on specific trims.

Consumer Reports gave the 2024 Cadillac CT4 a “Recommended” badge, along with a predicted reliability rating of 45/100, saying it expects it to have “about average reliability when compared to other new cars.” The CT4 didn’t win an individual award in the J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which looks at three-year-old vehicles, but Cadillac ranked twelfth among all automakers, one step below the industry average.

    2025 Cadillac CT4 Interior

Standard features on the 2025 Cadillac CT4 include dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charger. Available features, depending on the trim, can include a Bose 14-speaker sound system, navigation, 12-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, head-up display, leather upholstery, and ventilated and massaging seats.

    2025 Cadillac CT4 Canadian Pricing

The 2025 Cadillac CT4 starts at $43,733 in Luxury trim and RWD. The Premium Luxury and Sport are both priced at $47,633; and across all three, it’s an additional $2,000 to add AWD.

Setting up as one of the few four-door luxury sedans left in a market increasingly swamped by crossovers and SUVs, the infuriatingly named Cadillac CT5 offers a large, three-box luxury atmosphere that a tall wagon can struggle to match.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Competitors

Competition in this sector generally springs from hot Germans with the letters M or AMG appended to their names, such as similarly sized BMW sedans and Mercedes-Benz four-doors machines. The (relative) newcomer Genesis G70 is also worthy of inclusion. Japan is in the game with the Lexus IS sedan.

What’s new with the Cadillac CT5 for 2025?

For the CT5, some big news shows up in the form of Super Cruise as now standard on the Premium Luxury and Sport trims. Those same cars now also get an AKG 15-speaker audio system and dual pane sunroof as standard gear, as well. The enormous 33-inch advanced colour LED display also has new tech.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Performance

Standard CT5 cars have a 2.0L twin-turbo mill under the hood, making 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This can be had with rear- or all-wheel drive.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Efficiency

Base models with the 2.0L four-banger are rated by the feds at 10.4 L/100km city, 7.3 highway, and 9.0 combined. Opting for all-wheel drive adds about 0.6 L/100km to each of those figures.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Safety

Steering assist to prevent blind spot calamity is now standard fare, along with helpers which are expected in this class such as HD surround vision (save for the base 2.0L) and rear cross-traffic braking. Super Cruise is now standard on trims in which it was previously not available, bringing this excellent anti-fatigue tool to a wider audience.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Reliability

Consumer Reports estimates a three-of-five score for predicted reliability based on real-world feedback and data points for other cars in the brand. Predicted owner satisfaction is in the same ballpark. Its ratings have steadily improved over the last four model years. Concern is often hove at things like misaligned trim pieces – but that’s hardly the stuff which will leave one stranded roadside.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Interior

A digital screen of massive proportions dominates the interior and drags it all into the 21st century and in line with most everything else in a Cadillac showroom. The newly-standard 15-speaker sound system brings the goods to audiophiles and Super Cruise makes a great road trip companion. Front seats can heat, massage, and ventilate whilst being upholstered in buttery leather and the optional high-performance buckets could make an M engineer weep. Carbon fibre front seat backs can be replaced with suede seat backs if you like the people stuffed into the back seat.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Dimensions

Rear-drive entry models top the scales at just shy of 3,600 lbs (1,635 kg). Overall length is right around 195 inches (4,950 mm), partially explaining the stretch-‘em-out space, though ground clearance isn’t much more than 4 inches. Height is a very non-SUVish 57.4 inches or 1,453 millimetres.

    2025 Cadillac CT5 Canadian Pricing

Prices start at $52,899 for a four-cylinder variant with rear-drive and no extra options (though the car is already well equipped and hardly a stripper). Adding all-wheel drive costs $2,200 across the board.
