Lexus Overview

The upscale Lexus brand was introduced in 1989 as a competitor to established luxury marques like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. In short order, it grabbed a chunk of market share and forced its competitors to up their game in terms of quality and value to remain competitive with this new Japanese brand. These days, Lexus is well entrenched and high on the shopping lists of anyone looking for a sumptuous vehicle with acres of brand appeal.

Some of the most popular Lexus vehicles are built right here in Canada, with the RX and RX Hybrid assembled in Cambridge, Ontario. A plant in Kentucky churns out copies of the midsize ES sedan but all other models are built in the brand’s home country of Japan. There, four facilities – Yoshiwara, Motomachi, Tahara, and Kyushu – make vehicles for several markets.

Cars

The compact IS four-door is a foil to sporty Mercedes or BMW sedans, packing rear-wheel drive and an available V8 engine. More sedate options are on tap. The ES is a tweener midsize sedan with either front- or all-wheel drive plus the option of a hybrid powertrain. F Sport design cues are new this year on the hybrid.

Finally, the big-daddy LS is a luxury tour-de-force, serving as the brand flagship and transporting its occupants in a cocoon of hushed luxury. Choose from a zoomy twin-turbo V6 or efficient hybrid powertrain; it’s unlikely back seat riders will ever hear either one.

A brace of coupes add spice to the line. All-wheel drive is standard on the RC, paired to a 3.5L V6 making either 260hp or 311hp depending on tune. An F trim adds that 5.0L V8 from the IS, good for 472 horsepower. The LC is a six-figure personal coupe, available as a bespoke build in your choice of V8 hardtop or convertible – or a V6 hybrid electric if you must.

Crossovers and SUVs

At the entry-level rung is the UX crossover, a pint-sized machine perfect for city dwellers, offered only with a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive in this country. A series of F Sport packages sharpen its styling but do not increase horsepower. The NX model is available in a dizzying 15 different models across four powertrains – gassers, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. The latter, called NX 450h+, can travel up to 58 kilometres solely on electricity.

The made-in-Canada RX will have four engine choices for 2023 including a gasoline-powered unit, two different hybrids, and a plug-in hybrid packing an 18.1-kWh battery. Trims run the gamut from Executive to F Sport Performance, all pairing well with the RX’s new styling and entertaining paint choices. All-wheel drive is standard across the range in Canada. An all-electric RZ is planned for the near future.

Rounding out the Lexus showroom are two jumbo SUVs, the sizeable GX and the truly gargantuan LX. The GX has a V8 engine good for 301 horsepower funneled to earth through a full-time four-wheel drive system. The newly revamped six-figure LX utilizes a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 producing 409 ponies, riding atop a traditional body-on-frame construction and wielding enough road presence to clear out the left lane during rush hour.

    2025 Lexus NX 450h+ Performance

This car features a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain combining the best of electric vehicle and hybrid-electric vehicle operation. 2025 Lexus NX 450h+ Reliability

As with many other models from a brand which sits atop the Consumer Reports heap in terms of overall reliability, the NX’s mechanicals are very well regarded by the CR boffins. However, the NX as a whole suffers in rating thanks to what was historically deemed fussy infotainment controls; the system was been overhauled last year but the model is saddled with poor marks for the old infotainment since Consumer Reports aggregates its scores based on years of accumulated data.

Executive trims adds 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, wireless charging dock, and panoramic view monitor in addition to other gear. Towing capacity maxes out at 2,000 pounds and cargo capacity is capped at 46.9 cubic feet.

While the NX is small(er) in stature, it isn’t very small in price. An opening bid is all of $63,330 including fees but not taxes, the Executive trim is an $80,485 proposition, while the F Sport and its jazzy colour selections will trade for $80,605. For all the success Lexus has with vehicles like the LS and RX, the latter of which literally invented a segment and continues to dominate today, it hasn’t really been able to create a smaller sedan which can keep the Germans up at night.

    2025 Lexus IS Competitors

This is a car conceived to take on the mighty BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C Class range, and Audi A4 (or S4 depending on engine choice). Contemporary foes can also be found in a Genesis G70 and Cadillac CT4, at least until the latter gives up on making gasoline-powered cars.

What’s new with the Lexus IS for 2025?

This is a nameplate which is rapidly approaching its 25th year on the market. To mark the occasion, a limited production IS 500 Special Appearance Package available. There are also new BBS wheel designs for the IS 350 F Sport and IS 500 trims. As well, the IS 300 F Sport and IS 350 F Sport add standard features like power-folding/heated/auto-dimming exterior mirrors.

    2025 Lexus IS Performance

The IS 300 AWD grades feature a 3.5L V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, tuned to produce 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of twist. Meanwhile the IS 350 has the same 3.5L V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission but is tuned to produce 311 ponies and 280 torques. It, too, has all-wheel drive. Finally, the brawny IS 500 packs a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 and eight-speed automatic transmission. This rear-wheel-drive model delivers 472 horses and 394 lb-ft of torque. It can fling the car from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

    2025 Lexus IS Efficiency

Starting with the IS 300 AWD, we find an economy rating of 12.2 L/100km urban, 9.0 highway, and 10.8 combined. This changes to, well, 12.2/9.0/10.8 in the IS 350 AWD – which is no change at all, of course. Makes one wonder why they’d consider the less powerful model other than on price. As for our favourite, the V8-equipped IS 500 RWD, don’t expect to get much more than 14.1/9.3/11.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city/highway/combined.

    2025 Lexus IS Safety

All models are fitted with Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 which is a portfolio of active safety tech including full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and a pre-collision system that watches out for pedestrians and cyclists. Other standard safety systems include a blind spot monitor system with rear cross traffic alert, 10 airbags, and the Euro-style inclusion of an on-board first aid kit.

    2025 Lexus IS Reliability

Consumer Reports slings the IS squarely into the middle of its pack, ranking it 6th out of 11 luxury compact cars with which it feels the model competes. However, true to form, this Lexus scores a 4-of-5 rating on predicted reliability, above just about everything else in class save the Audi A4; ditto on predicted owner satisfaction, if you’re wondering.

    2025 Lexus IS Interior

Thanks to economies of scale, every IS from the entry model to top dog V8 gets heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in NuLuxe upholstery. A heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control are also standard across the board, as they should be at these prices. Be sure to get the 10.3-inch infotainment screen, optional on the IS 300 but standard on the IS 350 and IS 500. A ten-speaker sound system is standard but the top two models can get a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.

    2025 Lexus IS Dimensions

Sizing is identical across all three powertrains, save for overall length. Why? Because the V8 chooses to wear an extra-aggressive appearance. The two V6 models are 4,710 millimetres (185.4 inches) long while the V8 iterant is 4,758 mm (187.3”) long. Width for all three checks in at 1,839 mm (72.4”) and height is 1,440 mm (56.7”). Ground clearance is 140 millimetres or 5.5 inches on all trims.

    2025 Lexus IS Canadian Pricing

Sticker prices of the 2025 Lexus IS are nearly so broad as the factory in which they are built. The range starts with a $48,258 IS 300 AWD Premium, though spending an extra $1,500 on the F Sport Design package for its aesthetics is a no-brainer. The middle-child IS 350 AWD is $58,398 for an F Sport 2 trim (add five grand when walking to the F Sport 3). As for the V8 variant, that’ll set you back $76,290 plus fees unless you want this year’s special appearance package which knocks on a stunning 80 grand.

Capping the range in terms of power is a direct injection 3.5L V6 good for 302 horses.

    2025 Lexus ES Efficiency

The ES 250 AWD model is rated by the feds at 9.6 L/100km city, 7.0 highway, and 8.4 combined. Popping for the hybrid, known as the ES 300h, improves those numbers significantly to 5.5, 5.2, and 5.3 respectively. Finally, the ES 350 slurps fuel to the tune of 10.7 city, 7.3 highway, and 9.2 combined. Adding an F Sport package to that dings performance by a couple of tenths.

    2025 Lexus ES Safety

All models are fitted with Lexus Safety System + 2.5 which is a portfolio of active safety technologies to support the driver’s awareness and decision-making under a range of traffic conditions. Other standard safety systems include the blind spot monitor system with rear cross traffic alert, and an on-board first aid kit. The ES 350, which stood as the test vehicle for all trims in crash testing, earned a Top Safety Pick.

    2025 Lexus ES Reliability

Consumer Reports gives this sedan a towering 75-of-100 score for predicted reliability, thanks in no small part to the raft of positive data flowing from other models in the Lexus line. Predicted owner satisfaction is also quite high, with CR saying this four-door cruiser is a rewarding choice for road trips.

    2025 Lexus ES Interior

Some grades, like the top tier editions of the hybrid model, feature technology upgrades such as a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio system, and a 10” head-up display. To be frank, those are the trims you want in a luxury sedan.

    2025 Lexus ES Dimensions

No matter the chosen powertrain, all Lexus ES models are the same size, measuring 4,974 millimetres (195.8 inches) long from bumper to bumper. Width is 1,865 mm (73.4 inches) and height is 1,445 mm (56.9 inches) which are comparable measurements to other sedans but may feel foreign to anyone trading out of a crossover – especially with ground clearance at just 150 mm (5.9 inches).

    2025 Lexus ES Canadian Pricing

An even dozen of trims are bookended by an entry-level $49,685 ES 250 AWD Signature and a top-rung $66,219 ES 300h Ultra Luxury. In between we find models such as a $53,364 ES 350 Premium and a $57,251 ES 300h F Sport Design. The new ES 350 Black Line has a starting price of $64,541 if you’re so inclined.
