Fisker Overview

If you want the coolest designs, it makes sense to check out an automaker founded by an iconic automotive designer like Henrik Fisker. Fisker is the man behind some of the coolest-looking cars of all time, including the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Fisker went on to start his own automaker called Fisker Automotive, back in 2007, and set about making the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid with some loans from the U.S. government. In 2011 it made and sold between 2,000 and 2,500 Fisker Karmas, but financial issues led Fisker Automotive to declare bankruptcy in 2013 and sell off its assets to a Chinese auto parts conglomerate that eventually renamed the holding company Karma Automotive.

Henrik Fisker wasn’t done though as he held the Fisker trademarks and brand, so he went on to found another company bearing his name, this time known as Fisker Inc. Established in 2016, it's led by Henrik’s wife, Geeta Gupta-Fisker as president and CFO.

Fisker Inc has two electric vehicles in development. The Fisker Ocean is expected to launch in 2023 and will be built by Magna in Austria. It’s expected to use a significant amount of recycled materials to minimize its carbon footprint and appeal to environmentally-minded shoppers. It is expected to pack an 80 kWh battery, either using lithium-ion technology or a new nickel manganese cobalt makeup. That’s supposed to be enough for a maximum of 563 kilometres of range depending on the configuration. Fisker will offer 275 hp front-wheel-drive and 540 hp all-wheel-drive models and will appeal to techies with a large 17.1-inch touchscreen that can rotate from a portrait to landscape format to make it ideal for watching media while stopping for a recharge. It starts at $43,999 for the FWD model, making it eligible for the $5,000 EV rebate from the federal government and potentially other provincial incentives. Shoppers can also opt for the AWD Ocean Ultra model, which costs $63,999. While the exact timing is yet to be announced, the automaker has boasted that the Ocean has racked up over 63,000 pre-orders globally.

The automaker is also working on a second car known as the Pear, which is an acronym for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution. This is meant to be a smaller and more affordable alternative to the Ocean, with an expected starting price of US$29,900. This little guy will feature a range of about 500 km and will be built by Foxconn in Ohio, at a plant previously owned by General Motors. The automaker is hoping it can crack an output of 250,000 units per year when production starts in late 2024.

If making cars is hard, then starting a brand new car company from scratch is arguably even harder. Still, that hasn’t stopped serial entrepreneur and gearhead Henrik Fisker from doing just that – twice. This time around, the Fisker brand has already expanded to several all-electric models, all at various stages of production readiness. The new Ocean serves as a beachhead into the reasonably sized EV crossover segment.

What’s new with the Fisker Ocean for 2024?

Well, everything really. Seeking to take some lunch money from the Tesla Model Y and its ilk, the Fisker Ocean is built by Canadian company Magna in Austria, packing a stylish body from the pen of Henrik Fisker himself plus a high-tech cabin that’s sure to please customers shopping for the latest and greatest in this segment.

As an example of the latter, a traditional fixed panoramic roof is fitted to the least expensive trim but tonier models have a power sliding glass panel – the most expensive of which has integrated photovoltaic solar panels and special UV protection. Other fun but useful features include a so-called taco trays which pop forth from the centre console, ready to be unfolded and bear the weight of a laptop or – you guessed it – a feed of tacos.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Performance

Sport trims have an electric motor on just one axle, good for 282 horsepower and a run to highway speeds in just over 7 seconds. Not bad for a so-called ‘base’ model. Stepping up and into the Ultra brings an extra electric motor for all-wheel drive and a healthy 564 horses. Depending on drive mode, 100 km/h can be yours in less than four seconds. Another trim, the Extreme, offers the same performance stats as the Ultra – despite its aggro moniker.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Efficiency

It is important to remember that adding large wheels and tires to an EV generally saps the distance it can drive on a fully charged battery. Case in point: the Ocean Sport is rated at 372 kilometres with 20-inch wheels but only 312 km with 22-inch dubs. Vanity, thy name is electric driving range. Meanwhile, the Extreme trim is rated by NRCan at 579 kilometres and the Ultra at checks in at 563 clicks.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Safety

The all-electric Ocean crossover has met the applicable US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, while also meeting New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards for a five-star rating in Europe. This is another way of saying the car meets North American safety standards for any new mass-produced vehicle, but it hasn't yet to endure actual crash testing carried out by crash test dummies on this side of the pond. These checkmarks all but assure the Ocean EV will receive a five-star rating here if government entities decides to test the thing.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Reliability

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Consumer Reports has yet to strap their testing gear onto a Fisker Ocean, such is the newness of this EV. However, they do correctly opine that it looks something like a cousin to the Range Rover Evoque, albeit one with all-electric power. Absent measured testing, we can report the Ocean will offer a standard active driving assistance system called Fisker Intelligent Pilot, a suite of tools which includes basics like automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning plus other advanced systems to smooth the daily commute.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Interior

Seating for five is part of this EV’s mission statement, to say nothing of the exacting standards set out by design boss (and namesake) Henrik Fisker. One of the interior’s party pieces is an optional revolving feature on its 17.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, giving it the power to swivel from portrait Control mode to landscape to Hollywood mode; the latter can then deploy movies in 16:9 widescreen format, complete with 360-degree sound.

Designed to be one of the most so-called ‘sustainable’ SUVs on the market, the Fisker Ocean features a carefully crafted interior featuring the likes of ethically sourced and upcycled materials. High-grade upholstery, carpets, and interior details are made from recycled bottles and other plastics. Fisker is making a big deal out of these efforts, promoting it as a way to help lower the carbon footprint of manufacturing these fabrics – and the car itself. The cargo area features 566 litres of space (about 20 cubic feet), expandable to 1,274 litres with the rear seats folded.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Dimensions

Overall length of this vehicle is 4,775 millimetres (188.0 inches), putting it in league with vehicles like the Tesla Model Y. Width is 2,122 mm (84.0”) and height is 1,629 mm (64.1 inches). Ground clearance is only 140 mm (5.5”) for the Extreme and Ultra trims – a touch less for the Sport – so be sure to judge that snowbank accordingly.

    2024 Fisker Ocean Canadian Pricing

In this country, the Ocean EV starts at $45,999 for an entry-level Sport trim, the one with a single electric motor and less than 400 kilometres of driving range on a full charge of its 88.0 kilowatt-hour battery. Price for a mid-range Ultra $67,999 while the Extreme checks in at $79,799 if you really want to impress the neighbours.
