Buick Overview

With origins that predate the 20th century, Buick is among the oldest automotive marques in the world and is one of the oldest American automakers still operating today.

The Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company was established in 1899 by David Dunbar Buick to develop internal combustion engines. Later, the Buick Motor Company was founded in 1903. Buick’s engineering acumen produced the overhead-valve engine, a technology that was revolutionary at the time. His business skills, though, weren’t quite as sharp, and Buick’s endeavours went through various financial hardships until their management was handed over to others. One of those early figureheads was William C. Durant, who later merged the Buick brand into General Motors operations in 1908. During this same era, Louis Chevrolet raced competitively for the Buick marque and made Durant’s acquaintance, a connection that was instrumental in that brand’s founding in 1911.

Meanwhile in Canada, in 1907 the McLaughlin Motor Car Company—established by Southern Ontario-born Robert McLaughlin and his sons, Sam and George—began producing Canadian-built cars with Buick drivetrains in Oshawa, Ont., the city where General Motors of Canada still operates its headquarters and an assembly facility to this day. The McLaughlin Motor Car Company and the Chevrolet Motor Car Co. of Canada were merged in 1918 to form General Motors of Canada, with Sam and George named the new company’s first president and vice-president, respectively. The McLaughlin-Buick name endured on Canadian-built cars until 1942. The post-World War II era saw Buick’s renaissance, highlighted by nameplates such as the Buick Roadmaster, Skylark, and Riviera. Buicks were built in Canada into the late 1970s at GM’s Ste-Thérèse Assembly based outside of Montreal, which has since been decommissioned and demolished.

Today, Buick is positioned as mid-premium and is slotted between Chevrolet and Cadillac on the luxury hierarchy of General Motors brands. The marque’s line-up has been pared down in recent years: Buick sedans were dropped entirely in North America in favour of a lineup comprised entirely of SUVs. The final car nameplates to be axed were the Buick Regal, Buick LaCrosse, and Buick Verano, all of which continue to be sold in China. The Chinese market is by far Buick’s largest, accounting for some 80 per cent of the brand’s sales with North America being responsible for the remainder.

Buick’s larger SUVs, the Envision compact SUV and Enclave three-row mid-size SUV, can be purchased under the brand’s Avenir line. The word avenir directly translates from French to mean “the future,” and the line is Buick’s equivalent to GMC’s Denali grades, indicating the top-of-the-line and most luxurious offerings available on those nameplates.

The Encore GX is Buick’s best seller in North American and was the first vehicle to adopt the brand’s new tri-shield logo and signature front-end styling — it is not difficult to see shades of the Wildcat EV concept in the front-end. The five-seater is offered with front- and all-wheel-drive options and in Preferred, Sport Touring and upscale Avenir models.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Competitors

The competitors are manifold and include the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross. However, the Avenir has more upscale aspirations, so the likes of the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 might also be considered competition.

What’s new with the 2025 Buick Encore GX?

The Buick Encore GX received a design refresh last year that included updated lighting, wheel designs and bumpers. It also ushered in the top-line Avenir. It has unique exterior styling cues, 19-inch wheels and an upgraded interior with leather seats and heated steering wheel. For 2025, Encore GX remains unchanged.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Performance

The Encore GX comes with a 1.3L turbo-three as standard. It produces 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. The base front-drive Preferred works with a continuously variable transmission, which tends to blunt the performance. The Sport Touring and Avenir have all-wheel-drive (AWD) as standard, and use a better a nine-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to the use of Buick’s QuietTuning technology the turbo-three does not sound like there’s a bag of hammers under the hood. Likewise, it has decent performance. No, it won’t wow, but there’s enough to pass a slower vehicle with confidence — the nine-speed transmission shifts gears quickly and lets the engine run to redline. However, it is a lightweight tow vehicle — 453-kg is the max.

The AWD setup sends drive torque to the rear wheels whenever the Encore launches, which minimizes unwanted wheelspin. Once moving the system reverts to a front-drive format. It will re-engage AWD whenever slippage is detected. The ride and handling is surprisingly perky for a Buick — the brand tends to waft rather than feel like a driver’s crossover. Here, however, the roll control is good, the steering is responsive and it handles a fast off-ramp with poise.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Efficiency

The Buick Encore GX Preferred front-drive is rated at 8.0 L/100 km in the city, 7.5 L/100 km on the highway and an average consumption of 7.8 L/100 km. The annual fuel cost is $2,418. The AWD models consume 9.1, 8.4 and 8.8 L/100 km, respectively, and have an annual fuel cost of $2,728.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Encore GX Good scores in the small front overlap, moderate front overlap and original side impact tests. It has the top Superior rating for forward crash prevention thanks to things like auto-emergency braking and forward collision alert with pedestrian detection. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane keep assist are also standard features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) give it an overall rating of Five Stars.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Reliability

Consumer Reports gives the Buick Encore GX a score of 47 out of 100. It says, “We expect the 2024 Encore GX will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on the 2021, 2022, and 2023 models, plus the Buick brand scores.”

    2025 Buick Encore GX Interior

The 2025 Encore GX has a nicely appointed cabin. The highlight is Buick’s new Virtual Cockpit System. It puts an 8-inch instrument cluster and 11-inch infotainment touchscreen under a single pane of glass that’s canted toward the driver. The infotainment side is quick to respond and it’s intuitive. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a Wi-Fi hotspot. You’ll also find available wireless phone charging.

    2025 Buick Encore GX Dimensions

The Encore GX is 4,347-mm long, 1,813-mm wide and it ride on a 2,595-mm wheelbase. For a compact crossover it has lots of rear seat space (915-mm) and headroom (965-mm). The cargo space measures 665L behind the rear seat and 1,421L with it folded flat.

2025 Buick Encore GX Canadian Pricing

The front-drive Encore GX Preferred has an MSRP of $30,049; all-wheel-drive adds $2,000. The mid-range Sport Touring is $33,699 and the top Avenir comes in at $36,929. Freight and PDI is $2,000 in all cases.

Seeking to grab a piece of the subcompact near-luxury pie, Buick introduced the Envista just a few short months ago as a replacement for the dumpling-like Encore. Plaudits were hove at the car for its roominess given a compact footprint and decent level of standard equipment; its styling choices are also pleasantly upscale.

What’s new with the Buick Envista for 2025?

Revealed last year for the 2024 model year, the Envista only has mild changes for this annum. A new Aquamarine Blue Metallic replaces the Sunrise Red Metallic, while a couple of other colours move about the chart at different trim levels.

    2025 Buick Envista Competitors

Buick will want us to look for competition in the form of a Lexus UX or Volvo XC40 but, given pricing and brand image, there’s a case to be made for the Mazda CX-30 or VW Taos as acceptable foils to this car.

    2025 Buick Envista Performance

A little 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder engine lives under that hood, making an GM-estimated 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. This is hooked to a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, tools appropriate for this class – even in a car whose name sounds like a fledgling search engine from the 1990s.

    2025 Buick Envista Efficiency

Fuel economy is good but not overly great, considering the diminutive displacement of its engine. City mileage is rated at 8.4 L/100km, highway efficiency at 7.4, and combined checks in at 7.9 L/100km. Fuel capacity is just 50 litres and regular gasoline works fine.

    2025 Buick Envista Safety

Standard active safety tools on all trims of the 2025 Envista include automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist with departure warning, and automatic high beams. Crash testing results are on par with its peers.

    2025 Buick Envista Reliability

Much data has yet to be collected about the Envista by boffins at Consumer Reports, thanks in no small part to the fact it has been on sale for only one year. Still, they’ve enough data points for this powertrain in other GM vehicles and for the Buick brand itself to estimate a predicted reliability score in the three-of-five ballpark.

    2025 Buick Envista Interior

An 11.0-inch touchscreen does duty as an infotainment screen, including audio streaming for two devices and wireless smartphone mirroring. There are a raft of USB ports, six audio speakers, heated front seats, and heated flat-bottom steering wheel though the climate controls are single-zone no matter how much you spend on an Envista. Note that headroom takes a good two-inch (50 mm) shave when a moonroof is opted, so choose wisely if you are of NBA stature. Wireless charging is not available on Preferred trims.

    2025 Buick Envista Dimensions

The Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir trims are all the same size – as one would expect from such a mass market car. Overall length is 4,638 millimetres (182.6 inches) on a 2,700 mm (106.0-inch) wheelbase. Height taps out at 1,554 mm (61.2 inches) while width is 4,638 mm or 71.5 inches on the beam. Cargo space behind the rear seat mazes at 586 litres or just over 20 cubic feet.

    2025 Buick Envista Canadian Pricing

Solely a front-wheel drive proposition, the Envista starts at a hair under $27,000 for the Preferred trim, plus fees. That sum rises to $28,299 for the Sport Touring and tops out at $31,899 for a loaded Avenir. As with most GM products, mid-range trims offer the layering of options packages and standalone extras, all waiting to pad out the bill.
