— Jesse Faden during A Captive Audience |
The X-Ray Light Box (OOP18-PE), also known as the Astral Conduit,[1] is an Object of Power contained by the Federal Bureau of Control in the Oldest House. When Jesse Faden binds the OoP in the side mission A Captive Audience, it grants her the ability Seize.
Description[]
The object is a medical lightbox used to examine x-ray images. The X-Ray Light Box contains brain and skull x-ray images of an unspecified patient named Cage M.; these images cannot be removed from the box.
When bound, the object allows parautilitarians to forcefully seize an individual's mind and bring them under the parautilitarian's control. The individual will persist in this state for a varying, but limited, amount of time before they are naturally released. Once released, whether naturally or prematurely, the seized individuals will die as a result of psychic trauma from their possession.[2]
Containment Procedure[]
The X-Ray Light Box has no unique containment procedures as specified in its documentation.
- No unique procedures needed.
History[]
Discovery[]
The Bureau discovered the object in September 2003, when a janitor working at St. Anne's Hospital in an unspecified region bound the item and used it to take control of all occupants of the building. A Bureau team sent to contain the situation successfully recovered the object, but a high number of fatalities occurred, presumably mostly amongst hospital occupants who could not recover from the psychic trauma of possession.[2]
Bureau Usage[]
After the X-Ray Light Box was brought to the Oldest House, it was contained in the Hypnosis Lab for study.
Making physical contact with the X-Ray Light Box, much like with other Objects of Power, sends individuals to the Astral Plane. In this way, the X-Ray Light Box is the centerpiece of the Bureau's Astral research program, and is where the object gained its alternate name as the Astral Conduit. The Bureau sends specially trained agents called Astralnauts to explore and document the Astral Plane via the X-Ray Light Box in the Hypnosis Lab.[3]
Events of Control[]
When the Hiss invasion of the Oldest House began, the X-Ray Light Box remained contained in the Hypnosis Lab and was not corrupted by the Hiss. However, the Object had become unbound, which allowed it to manifest its ability and "seize" a number of Bureau personnel. Jesse Faden can optionally investigate the Hypnosis Lab and bind the Light Box, allowing her to gain the Seize ability. However, the personnel enthralled by the Object are killed.[4]
Parautilitarians[]
The following are known parautilitarians who have bound this object to themselves at some point:
- St. Anne's Hospital janitor
- Jesse Faden (optional)
Achievements and trophies[]
The following achievement and trophy is gained when the Box is cleansed and bound, and Jesse Faden has returned from the Astral Plane.
