Not to be confused with Reigo Island Massacre.
Are you prepared to handle the spoilers ahead?

The Reigo Island Seventeen-Victim Massacre (囹圄島の17人虐殺 , Reigo-jima no Jū-nana-nin Gyakusatsu?) was the ultimate outcome of the Reigo Island Massacre, which led detective Yukito Ayatsuji to be labeled as a Special A-Grade Dangerous Skill User by the government.

Summary[]

Ayatsuji at Reigo Island (Gaiden manga)

Ayatsuji at Reigo Island.

The massacre occurred five years ago after Ayatsuji arrived on Reigo Island and solved the mass murder being secretly committed by its 17 inhabitants and their leader. As a result, all 17 suspects died through accidents as fulfilled by Ayatsuji's ability.[1] Military police inspector Asukai also happened to be present at the time and witnessed the "horrifying things" left at the massacre scene, which he described to be "burned in his eyes forever."[2]

The 18th murderer and mastermind of the incident was not found. He was not killed by Another because he was away from the island when Ayatsuji arrived. Nonetheless, he was referred to by the police as the Engineer based on his profession on the island and that he was a male missing the tip of his left ring finger.[1] Five years later, an individual fitting this description is discovered by Ayatsuji, Mizuki Tsujimura, and Asukai and his team after being caught on camera, apparently responsible for an elevator crash in the Ministry of Justice building.[3]

Tsujimura's mother as a Reigo Island murderer (Gaiden manga)

Tsujimura's mother as a "murderer" in Reigo Island.

In addition, among the suspects in the massacre is Tsujimura's mother. After the latter's death, Tsujimura seemingly inherited her ability and is recruited into the Special Division for Unusual Powers, where she eventually becomes Ayatsuji's monitor.[3] In truth, however, Tsujimura's mother—the Special Division's assistant director—sought Ayatsuji's help to fake her death in exchange for sparing his life, so Ayatsuji made it look like she was among the 17 murderers and therefore among the massacre's casualties.

Aftermath[]

Since Ayatsuji's ability killed 17 people, a kill count higher than the Reigo Island Massacre's number of deaths itself, the government marked the detective as a Special A-Grade threat and consequently placed him under the Special Division's monitoring.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The incident bears some nods to the real-life Yukito Ayatsuji's debut novel, The Decagon House Murders:
    • Like the massacre in Reigo Island, the novel's murders are also set on an island, where the Decagon House is located.
    • The 17 victims were considered as prime suspects who committed murders. The novel's central characters are also suspected to committing murder, in such a way that they think they are being killed off by someone among them.
    • The 18th Reigo Island murderer survived and evaded Ayatsuji's ability after escaping Reigo Island, while the novel's primary suspect among the group also survived and left the island in the end.
