Naomi Tanizaki ( (たに) (ざき) ナオミ, Tanizaki Naomi?) is an office staff at the Armed Detective Agency and the adoptive younger sister of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki[1].

Appearance

Naomi is a high school-age girl with hip-length black hair that is styled in a side-swept hime cut and dark grey eyes. She also has a beauty mark underneath her left eye. In general, her appearance does not resemble her brother, given her charismatic allure compared to Tanizaki's timid disposition.[3]

She wears a standard seifuku that consists of a white long-sleeved blouse attached with a red sailor-style collar and a black pleated skirt that comes above her knees. She also dons black socks that reach the middle of her calves and a pair of brown loafers.

During the aftermath celebration of cannibalism events, Naomi wears her hair in a high bun. She also wears a sky blue dress with white top over it. She also wears heels.[4]

Naomi is a bold and strong-willed young girl, who never shies away from involving herself in a case—more specifically, ones that involve her older brother's well-being. Despite not being an ability user, she is often embroiled in the Agency's conflict,[5][6] but when told to leave, she mostly refuses.[7]

As an Agency clerk, Naomi is rather intelligent and quick-thinking, even amidst perilous circumstances. She is also shown to be mentally resilient because, in spite of being a near-frequent victim to kidnappings and ability users, she takes it quite well and is outwardly unaffected.[7][5][6] Moreover, she appears to be courteous towards Agency clients, as shown when she professionally served Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald some tea, though she retained some subtle hostility towards their adversary similar to the President at the time.[7]

Tanizaki's name and ability and Naomi's introduction

Naomi's figurative and literal closeness with her brother.

Probably one of Naomi's most prominent characteristics is her deep-seated love for her elder brother, whom she is always with. When with her brother, she can be both childish and provocative.[8][9][10] Her feelings seem to go beyond that of ordinary sisterly love and can be seen as romantic in nature due to a number of questionable circumstances and suggestive remarks, to the point that the Agency keeps silent on their relationship "for fear that their hunch was right".[3]

Naomi shields Tanizaki from the gunshots

Naomi protects Tanizaki from a rain of bullets.

However, be it romantic or platonic, Naomi remains unwavering in her devotion and belief towards her brother[5] and does what she can to protect him from harm's way, even shielding him with her own body from Ichiyō Higuchi's gunshots.[10]

Besides her brother, Naomi is also kind and caring towards the other members of the Agency. She visibly shows concern when the others were contemplating abandoning Atsushi Nakajima during his kidnapping[11] and easily forgives him when he falls victim to Dogra Magra that caused him to lash out on her and Kirako Haruno with his powers.[12]

Skills

  • Intelligence: Naomi is quite intelligent as an Agency clerk, being once taught basic strategy by Osamu Dazai. He told her that, if one's enemy holds the same amount of information as them, they must outwit their enemy to win; and that one loses by default when their enemy has more information than them. Naomi utilized this strategy to outmaneuver John Steinbeck and Howard Phillips Lovecraft by misleading them, which successfully worked momentarily.
    • Deduction Skills: Naomi also has satisfactory deduction skills, in which Haruno even mentioned that Naomi would make a better detective than her own brother if she had an ability. Naomi was once able to accurately deduce that the Port Mafia lured in Steinbeck and Lovecraft to her and Haruno as baits, seeing this as the optimal method that would benefit the Mafia over the Guild. She also even correctly noticed that the Mafia would have timed the Guild's arrival in order to let the Agency arrive on time.[5]
  • Dexterity: In conjunction with her quick thinking, Naomi was once able to swipe car keys from a maid in their lodging upon their arrival.[5]
  • Endurance: Despite not being an ability user, Naomi has immense endurance for a normal human being, able to survive near-death major injuries from Higuchi's firearm assault after once shielding her brother using her own body.[10]

Background

Though not much is said about their past or where their parents are, before joining the Armed Detective Agency, her older brother Tanizaki was a student.[13] At present, Naomi lives alone with him,[14] and she works part time at the Agency when not in school.[3]

Etymology

  • The name Naomi comes from the titular antagonist of the real-life Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's novel Naomi, also entitled A Fool's Love (痴人の愛, Chijiin no Ai?). The in-series Naomi's romantically active and rather promiscuous attitude may be based off the novel's Naomi, as well as other female characters in Tanizaki's works.[15]
    • This makes her one of the only characters not named after an author but rather named after a character from an author's work, Elise being another one.
  • Naomi's surname Tanizaki means "valley" (谷) (tani) and "cape, peninsula" (崎) (saki/zaki).

Trivia

  • The unit number of the Tanizaki siblings' residence is 203.[14]
