Jasmine Crockett and Jane Hamilton were the top two finishers in the Democratic Party primary election for Texas' 30th Congressional District on March 1, 2022. Crockett received 48.5% of the vote, followed by Hamilton with 17% of the vote. No other candidate received more than 10% of the vote. Because no candidate won 50% of the vote, Crockett and Hamilton advanced to a runoff election on May 24.

Incumbent Eddie Bernice Johnson (D) , who was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992, did not seek re-election. The Cook Political Report and other outlets rated the 30th district Solid Democratic. Media attention focused on Crockett, Hamilton, and Jessica Mason.[2][3][4]

Crockett represented Texas House District 100 since January 2021 and was among the Texas House members who left the state in protest of SB1, which made a series of changes to Texas' election administration laws. “There’s a number of people who will most likely enter this race. There are none that I believe will enter this race that have been battle tested like I have this session," Crockett said.[5] She said she supported "Economic recovery that includes all, fair district maps, expanding healthcare and access to the ballot box, lowering property taxes, and reforming the criminal justice and policing systems."[6] Johnson and a number of Texas state representatives endorsed Crockett.

Hamilton served as an adviser on Pres. Joe Biden's (D) Texas campaign in 2020 and worked as an online program manager. She emphasized her local support, saying, "There is no other candidate in this race that has such broad support throughout the district" and the race would be "determined by the candidate who works the hardest and gets out their supporters. And I’m experienced doing just that.”[2] Hamilton said she supported criminal justice reform, expanding access to healthcare, and "Voters Rights legislation which prohibits States from disenfranchising people of color."[7] Hamilton's endorsers included U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey (D), Texas State Rep. Chris Turner (D), State Sen. Beverly Powell (D), and several local officials.

Mason is a Navy veteran and worked as a legislative staffer in the Virginia General Assembly and as a community outreach coordinator. She described herself as "the only progressive, the only democratic socialist in this race," and said "the establishment has purposefully kept economic opportunity away from underserved communities."[3] Mason said she supported universal healthcare and "ending cash bail, legalizing marijuana and expunging past convictions, and ensuring formerly incarcerated individuals have the right to vote and have job opportunities upon release."[8] Former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner (D) and former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson (D) endorsed Mason.

Barbara Mallory Caraway, Arthur Dixon, Vonciel Jones Hill, Keisha Lankford, Abel Mulugheta, and Roy Williams Jr. also ran.

Jasmine Crockett (D), Arthur Dixon (D), Jane Hamilton (D), Keisha Lankford (D), Zachariah Manning (D), and Abel Mulugheta (D) completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. To read those survey responses, click here.

Satellite spending describes political spending not controlled by candidates or their campaigns; that is, any political expenditures made by groups or individuals that are not directly affiliated with a candidate. This includes spending by political party committees, super PACs, trade associations, and 501(c)(4) nonprofit groups.[11][12][13]

If available, links to satellite spending reports by the Federal Election Commission and OpenSecrets.org are linked below. Any satellite spending reported in other resources is displayed in a table. This table may not represent the actual total amount spent by satellite groups in the election. Satellite spending for which specific amounts, dates, or purposes are not reported are marked "N/A." Campaign website

Lankford's campaign website stated the following:

  • Social Justic Reform
New innovations in policing and the monitoring of the justice system will improve police accountability and reduce controversial use-of-force in our community especially amongst communities of color. We need a smarter and tactical approach that recognizes that focusing on our racial differences does not create a safer city. We must, as a community, ensure equity in our law enforcement, judicial system, and society as a whole. We must give an ear to legitimate and widespread concerns about trust in administering due process to those accused. As Texans, more especially Americans, we are responsible to one another. How do we accomplish this notion?
First, revamp our criminal justice system. More police training, mandate body cameras, update data collection, and hold those officers irresponsible to account.
Second, rebuild trust between our community and our police officers. Police should not always reveal themselves during stings. They should be seen not only patrolling our community, but reside with us as well.
Third, when a life in our community ends at the hands of our police, ensure thorough and transparent investigations and prosecutions.
Finally, these improvements in policing, justice, and law enforcement are doable and can be accomplished. However, trust is not only crucial , but paramount.
  • John Lewis Voting Rights Act
No man or woman should be denied the constitutional right to vote because of race or geographical location.
I strongly support The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 which is proposed legislation that would restore and strengthen parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, although certain portions of which were struck down by two United States Supreme Court decisions of Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee. I will work diligently with colleagues in passing the legislation.
  • Pathway to Citizenship
The path to citizenship, I believe, would give immigrants five years of provisional status, after which they could apply for temporary status. Thus, three years later, as they meet the necessary criteria, citizenship.
  • Education Reform & Safety
It is my fervent belief that every single child, no matter their situation, middle-class, low income, or homeless, should have access to a high-quality and nurturing education, from preschool through high school and well beyond.
  • Economic Empowerment
Affordable living is key to sustaining a healthy lifestyle. According to research from MIT, the living wage in the United States was $16.54 per hour, or $68,808 per year in 2019, before taxes for a family of four (two working adults with two children) up from $16.14 in 2018. I will support a wage that is commensurate with this research.
  • Fair & Affordable Housing
Lack of access to affordable housing is a human rights issue. The National Fair Housing Alliance should be invested in our congressional district, as of January 2020, homelessness in Dallas which ranks #1, in the State of Texas. All the more reasons social services and homelessness management over the next five years should be invested in to end it. Upon my election, as your Congresswoman, I will push legislation on Day 1, for an investment in affordable housing to District 30.
  • Equity for all
I am in full support of passing the Equality Act currently known as House Bill 5. Prohibiting discrimination based upon sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and race including within public spaces, public bureaus, and public places embrace everything we stand for as Dallas residents, Texas residents, and American citizens in creating a more perfect union.[14]
