Campaign themes

2014

Fancher stated the following as his campaign priorities on his website:[3]

Common Core
Common Core is on my radar. Our current school board has been implementing this curriculum for almost 4 years now. Its unfortunate that many school districts are not choosing to compete nationally, and the proponents of common core say that this curriculum will make sure schools that are behind will catch up, but there are still many unanswered questions regarding the standardized testing, the data collection these new standards are implementing, and the textbooks that are being selected. I want our local school board to set standards that are high and select textbooks that match our conservative ideals and not a federal bureaucracy.

School Choice
I am in favor of school choice. I think our current system is failing those that need the most help. We need voices on our school board to communicate to our leaders in Nashville and to D.C. that parental choice is only meaningful when there is a diversity of options from which to choose.

Schools must have the autonomy to specialize - selecting their own methods, curriculum, testing, staff, and delivery systems. In other words, classical education should stay classical education. Schools that teach Christian principles should be allowed to continue to teach those ideals. We should allow ALL PARENTS to decide where, what, and how their kids learn. The truth is we already have school choice, but the question is can you afford it?

Fiscally Fit Schools that Value Good Teachers
I, like you, own a house in Rutherford County and therefore pay property taxes, of which over half go to our public schools. Public schools are a worthwhile expenditure, but we want to make sure that we are getting our money’s worth. From the information I have gathered, many are not. New schools are being built, while older schools are not maintained effectively. Furthermore we continue to see cutbacks in staff, and teachers are forced to do more paperwork and less teaching.

Many teachers are suffering from burnout and I have heard many are thinking of leaving our school system to find employment elsewhere. [4]
