I was born in San Francisco and my parents—a union nurse and a Vietnam War veteran—raised me in the Central Valley. After high school, I attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga and earned a J.D. and LL.M. from the McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. I have devoted my career to public service, first as a prosecutor in Contra Costa County, and later as a senior legislative aide to my two predecessors on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. After serving as San Francisco County Clerk, I was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and I won election in 2018 and reelection in 2022. As Supervisor, I have fought alongside community leaders for public safety, better parks and schools, more affordable housing, government accountability and transparency, and real solutions to San Francisco’s homelessness and addiction crises. I have lived in San Francisco for over two decades, and I am raising my children, Dominic and Gianna, here with my husband, Chris. I have also led San Francisco’s chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, served on the board of directors of the Homeless Prenatal Program, and competed in several triathlons to raise money to fight leukemia.
- Residents of San Francisco and San Mateo County are concerned about keeping their families and neighborhoods safe and deserve a champion in Sacramento. During my time on the Board of Supervisors, I’ve passed legislation implementing red flag laws, banned ghost guns, ensured civil counsel for domestic violence survivors, and made sure those suffering from addiction have access to the recovery services they need. Public safety – for everyone – is our primary responsibility and will be my top priority in the Assembly.
- This district also deserves a leader on housing, especially as the Bay Area grapples with sky-high housing costs and homelessness. One of the best ways to alleviate homelessness, combat climate change, and provide good, union jobs is to make sure that we create homes where the demand for housing is greatest and ensure people can stay and thrive in our community.
- I will always focus on ways to increase access to quality care for those who need it most, as well as policies that will help us attract and support the best and brightest healthcare workers in California. I understand the significance of California as a sanctuary for abortion access and vow to protect and preserve access to life-saving reproductive care.
Fighting for equal pay and the elimination of violence against women has always been a top priority for me before and throughout my time in office. Women are under attack across the country, whether from right-wing judges who believe domestic abusers should have easy access to guns or from ultraconservative politicians determined to take away our daughters’ rights.
For too long, gun violence has disproportionately impacted women, Black & Brown communities, and the LGBTQ+ community, through acts of hate and domestic, family, and sexual violence. Throughout my career, I have been a leader on gun violence prevention and will continue to lead on this work in the Assembly.
Through my upbringing in the Central Valley, to my decades of work across the Bay Area, countless experiences have shaped the values I hold dearly and the principles that I look for in my fellow elected officials. I have always believed in the importance of listening to all sides of an argument and finding ways to work with those you disagree with. A willingness to be open to new ideas and opinions is critical for any politician and essential to meaningfully representing a diverse constituency. I also believe there are basic values that we should uphold and fight for as elected officials. These include equity and safe conditions for workers – a principle ingrained in me at a young age by my mother, a nurse who worked in several different practices; the right for victims to be heard and for residents to feel safe in their homes; the right to housing that is affordable and accessible; the right to healthcare, especially for those suffering with mental health or substance abuse issues; the belief that my daughter and all women have control over every decision they make whether it be medically or personally; The belief that anyone should be able to love who they love and identify however they choose; and the belief that our government should be working to better the lives of working people and small business owners. These values have guided me throughout my career, and they will follow me and continue to guide me in the Assembly.
My deep policy experience, decades of community advocacy, collaborative approach, and fearless tenacity have earned me recognition and respect. I’m ready on day one to hit the ground running in the Assembly, working for families in our district.
