I am a retired doctor who grew up on the Dakota prairie and worked and raised my family in Minnesota. I devoted my life working to improve the lives of the people around me through my work as a doctor, fighting for healthcare affordability and access, and as an advocate for my community. I’ve started and worked in free clinics, worked to expand affordable childcare, and for investment in regenerative agriculture that builds resiliency for our family farmers in the face of our increasingly extreme weather. I believe that in my wealthy state, everyone should have dignity and security for their families, by earning living wages and being able to afford healthcare, childcare and housing. I have faith that what can unite us is our shared desire to invest in what makes our local communities stronger, whether it is our public schools, the infrastructure we all rely on, keeping our Main Streets alive and thriving, and to ensure all our caregivers earn an adequate wage. My goal as a legislator is to prioritize making sure everyone’s basic needs are met because in doing so, we are creating a secure and safe community for everyone.

  • Healthcare costs and access burden most people across Minnesota, but especially the self-employed, small business owners, and farmers. The need for affordable insurance holds people back from pursuing their dreams. It is the major source of debt, contributing to a crisis for our rural healthcare infrastructure. I want to partner with legislators who proposed a public insurance option that would improve affordability for all workers. I support a Prescription Drug Affordability Board to control drug costs for the most essential medications, creating affordable access to life-saving medications. Finally we must increase wages for caregivers- homecare, disability, and nursing home care- to ensure people will continue to do the work they love.
  • The quality of public schools in Minnesota has been a backbone of our economic success, a source of pride for communities, and a draw for businesses seeking an educated workforce. Yet, the state’s investment in education has not kept even with inflation, shifting the responsibility to fund federal mandates to local taxpayers who face increasing property taxes. In addition, Minnesota has not honored its obligation to fund our state institutions of higher education, making it increasing difficult for all students to get the education they seek. This shortsighted focus makes Minnesota less competitive for business innovators who create high paying jobs and whose employees seek quality communities. I will push to fully fund public education.
  • Minnesota’s healthy landscapes and abundant natural resources are an asset that draws people to our state and holds them here. It is our heritage and one of our most valuable assets, whether it is the rich soil of our working farmlands or the forests and waters that provide recreation. We must protect these. I am committed to working to keep family farmers on the land and to adopt farming practices that build resilience in the face of extreme weather events. I believe we must put the long-term health of our shared natural resources ahead of short-term profits and, in particular, protect the health of our waters. We can create high paying union jobs in clean energy and transit that protects the health of workers and our communities.

1. Reforming healthcare financing to ensure equitable and affordable access to all our residents, regardless of employment or zip code.
2. Ensuring all those who provide care-giving, whether in the home, a group setting, or institution, receive a wage that honors the challenging work they do, and ensures that we have a workforce ready to care for our aging population.
3. Fully funding our public education system to ensure that every child receives the quality education they deserve and that our educators have the adequate support staff, such as paraprofessionals, mental health experts, and counselors, needed.
4. Protecting our environment by taking advantage of the green energy opportunities available in my district to electrify our transportation systems while creating new employment.
5. Keeping family farmers on the land by investing the resources needed to support the adoption of farming practices that build resilience as well as investing in the infrastructure such as food processing and farm to school that allows them to grow food for our communities.
6. Investing in our early childhood education system to make sure that all kids have an opportunity to get a quality education in the critical first three years and all families can afford to both work and access this resource.
7. Protecting the right of workers to collectively bargain to secure safe working conditions and to receive the compensation and benefits that honors the labor they contribute.
