Certification

This is the final stage on the paediatric training pathway. When paediatricians take up a substantive, honorary or fixed-term consultant appointment in the NHS, they must be listed on the Specialist Register at the General Medical Council (GMC).

Certification of Completion of Training (CCT)

CCT is one of several routes to Specialist Register offered by GMC. You need to complete a UK training programme that carries GMC approval. You do not need to have sequential or contiguous years of training, though you must have at least one ARCP outcome plus an outcome 6 ARCP.

Portfolio Pathway (previously called CESR)

The Portfolio Pathway (previously Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) is for doctors who wish to join the GMC Specialist Register whose specialist training, qualifications or experience were partly or completely acquired outside of an approved CCT programme.

Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (combined programme) (CESR CP)

CESR (CP) was for doctors with prior training from outside a GMC approved programme, and who had not obtained the EU minimum time in GMC approved posts before receiving their outcome 6 ARCP.

Sub-specialty recognition

Doctors on the GMC Specialist Register may also apply for their registration to be updated with an approved sub-specialty in paediatrics.

How do we support the transition of senior trainees 'stepping up' into new consultant roles?

Our Stepping up programme supports the year period from RCPCH START (Specialty Trainee 7+) to the end of year three consultancy. We have a regional network of doctors and a range of learning resources.
