Enrollment and Fees
Enrolling in international insurance for university-related travel varies by program type and status with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The four most common scenarios are listed below (students, RSOs, faculty and staff leading programs, and faculty and staff on other travel).
The University of Illinois System pays the premium for university-related international travel for faculty and staff.
Insurance Fee for Undergrad and Graduate Students
The Safety and Security Admin Fee covers enrollment in international insurance, as well as the services provided through International Safety and Security, including 24/7 response team in the event of overseas emergencies, pre-departure training and orientation, international travel registry, and other services.
Fees are determined by the number of days spent abroad, also referred to as travel or program dates. Students should verify that their travel or program dates are the same as the insurance coverage dates, as listed in the Verification Letter you receive in the email from the international insurance provider.
The SSAF will increase for all travel beginning on or after December 26, 2024. This increase will cover premium increases for the 2024-2025 policy year.
Length of program or trip | Fee (in U.S. Dollars) | New Fee (Starting 12/26/2024) |
---|---|---|
Up to 2 weeks (1-16 days) | $90 | $92 |

Personal travel before, or after, your program is not eligible for coverage by international insurance. Refer to the Leisure Travel Insurance section of the Other Insurance Products page for other insurance options.
Students
All undergraduate and graduate students participating in university-related travel are required to enroll in international insurance.
Most undergraduate students participating in pre-approved semester-length, year-long, or faculty-led education abroad programs will be automatically enrolled. If you are unsure that you will be automatically enrolled in the International Insurance, check with the study abroad office sponsoring your program. The university strongly urges students to purchase international leisure travel insurance for any personal travel before or after the dates of your program.
Graduate students must register using the student application as well. Units may pay for student's international insurance by entering CFOP information in the billing questionnaire. Travelers should have the CFOP before starting their enrollment.

Registered Student Organizations
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are required to report international travel to International Safety and Security. RSOs should fill out the RSO International Travel Reporting Form. Participants are expected to enroll themselves in the insurance.
Faculty & Staff
Faculty and staff traveling abroad for all university-associated reasons. This includes, but is not limited to, business trips, conferences, Faculty exchanges, Faculty-led study abroad programs, teaching, research, service, or sabbaticals. University-related travel is not dependent on receiving University funding. There is no charge for faculty and staff.
