Training for Program Leaders

In accordance with the university Policy on Health and Safety in Education Abroad, International Safety and Security provides training for faculty and staff program leaders each semester.

Purpose: All Illinois short-term program leaders are required to attend one workshop a year. Depending on your level of experience you will take one of the three trainings below. If you do not know when you last took the training, please ask your study abroad office contact or email [email protected].

For faculty traveling with only graduate students please see Level 4 below.

LEVEL 1: INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY AND SECURITY ABROAD FOR FIRST-TIME PROGRAM LEADERS


Content: Introduction to safety and security practices with the Program Leader Emergency Protocol and an overview of the International Insurance.

Target Audience: Illinois faculty and staff who are first time leaders with Illinois, have not taken a Level 1 training in more than two years, or those who have never taken the International Safety and Security training even if they have led before. All graduate student leaders must take Level 1 training, even if they have led before.

Offered: Four times a semester, two in-person and two Zoom options. One and a half hours long.


LEVEL 2- ANALYSIS AND REFLECTION OF SAFETY AND SECURITY ABROAD FOR EXPERIENCED PROGRAM LEADERS


Content: Thorough examination of advanced case studies and reflections of experienced leaders. Review of the International Insurance.

Target Audience: Illinois faculty and staff that have taken Level 1 in the past two years. If you are a first-time leader or graduate student leader you are welcome to join Level 2, but you must also attend Level 1.

Offered: Four times a semester, two in-person and two Zoom options. One hour long.


LEVEL 3- ADVANCED WORKSHOP FROM A GUEST SPEAKER


Content: Varies dependent upon the speaker for that semester.

Target Audience: Same as Level 2. Illinois faculty and staff that have taken Level 1 in the past two years. If you are a first-time leader or graduate student leader you are welcome to join the Level 3, but you must also attend the Level 1. We encourage leaders to take both Level 2 and Level 3 workshops if possible.

Offered: Once a semester, in-person only. Up to one and a half hours long.


LEVEL 4- FACULTY TRAVELING WITH GRADUATE STUDENTS


Content: Brief review of safety procedures and International Insurance.

Target Audience: Faculty traveling with only graduate students for educational purposes, e.g. academic conference, research, site visit, etc.

Offered: On demand by emailing [email protected]. 30 minutes long.

Students can review information concerning benefits and assistance in the International Insurance Student Guide (PDF). Students should be encouraged to download the mobile guide (PDF) to their smartphone, tablet, or other device before travel. After reviewing the guide, students with remaining questions can contact International Safety and Security.
