| “ | Don't take the loss too hard. You never belonged here anyway. | „ |
| ~ Johnny to Mike before the final round of the Scare Games. |
| “ | You can't escape who you are, so just embrace it. | „ |
| ~ Johnny's sinister catchphrase to Tylor Tuskmon. |
| “ | The other power companies may tinker with new ideas, but you can't reliably power homes with good intentions. While laugh power has its merits, it's not who we are. It's a monster's nature to be scary. Fear, it's our tradition, but it's also human children's. We may rely on their screams to power our city, but human children need us to be terrifying. They tell stories about us at sleepovers and around campfires. We have a responsibility to keep kids scared, and I take that responsibility very seriously, as did my father before me. Fear Co. will continue that proud tradition, because fear is power. Let fear power you. | „ |
| ~ Johnny's speech during a press conference, foreshadowing his true nature. |
| “ | Tylor: That's a laugh canister from Monsters, Inc. Johnny: Yes, it is. And it's time my vice president learned the whole truth. You see, I've got somebody on the inside. (The mysterious figure slithers out of the door, then reveals itself to be none other than Randall, now with a scar on his right eye) Tylor: (gasps) Randall? Johnny: Boggs. Randall: (laughs evilly) Hahaha! Mission accomplished, boss. |
„ |

Jonathan James "Johnny" Worthington III, also known as The Jaw or simply Johnny Worthington III, is the secondary antagonist of Pixar's Monsters, Inc. franchise.
He started off as the leader of the Roar Omega Roar (RΩR) fraternity during his time at Monsters University. Years later, he had taken on a seemly neutral role inheriting Fear Co. from his father, Johnny Worthington II. However, Johnny's role was actually dark, malicious, and selfish, as he had been keeping watch on Tylor Tuskmon from the moment that he found out that Laugh Power is more efficient than Scream Power. And then, he plotted to turn him against Monsters Inc, and sink his rival company to ensure Fear Co's reign and Laugh Power's disapproval and scorn. He is also Randall Boggs' former schoolmate and second boss, as well as the ex-husband of Claire Wheeler, the estranged father of Lorelei and JJ Worthington, and the arch-nemesis of Mike Wazowski, James P. Sullivan, the five members of Oozma Kappa, and Tylor Tuskmon.
Johnny was voiced by Nathan Fillion, who also played Sterling Dunn in Cars 3, Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gao the Lesser in Jade Empire, Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, the Monstrous Inmate in Guardians of the Galaxy, Preston Northwest in Gravity Falls, Cornvelious Daniel in Rick and Morty, The Detachable Kid in The Suicide Squad, Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Headpool in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Personality[]
| “ | Oh, sorry, killer. But, you might want to hang out with someone a little more your speed. (points to Oozma Kappa) They look fun. Go crazy. | „ |
| ~ Johnny to Mike after he asked to join RΩR. |
As the president of RΩR, the premier campus fraternity, Johnny is very selfish and only interested in having the "most elite" Scarers in his fraternity. He invited James P. Sullivan to join because he comes from a family of successful Scarers, but mockingly denies Mike Wazowski and suggests that he join a fraternity that is "his speed".
Johnny clearly cares more about his fraternity's reputation (both grades and academics) when he threatens to kick Sulley out of RΩR if he doesn't beat Mike in the final exam. When Mike and Sulley are both kicked out of the Scaring Program by Dean Hardscrabble, Johnny and his friends leave without saying a word to Sulley.
His rivalry with Mike escalates when, just before the Scare Simulator, Johnny arrogantly tells Mike not to take losing so hard and that "[he] never belonged [in the Scaring Program] anyway." Mike wins the Scare Games due to Sulley's manipulation of the setup, making RΩR humiliated and surprised by his defeat. However, an opportunistic Johnny finds the audacity to invite Sulley back to RΩR, only to be turned down. He didn't have the decency or humility to admit defeat to Mikey and congratulate him, proving that his arrogant attitude remains completely intact.
During the events of Monsters at Work, when he becomes CEO of Fear Co., he's more malicious and villainous, teaming up with Randall Boggs to frame M.I. for the loss of the energy. Despite this, he has a family of his own which he seemingly cared for, as in one scenario, Worthington had the decency to bring them along for Fear Co.'s baseball match with Monsters, Inc. for quality time bonding. But despite all of this, Johnny doesn't seem to care about the well-being of his own workers nor about the Monstropolis's citizens. For he failed to realize that mixing laugh energy with scare energy could lead to a corporate impact. Which would eventually cause a chain reaction that would affect all of Monstropolis.
He was impressed by Tylor's powerful roar that he revealed his focus on power and other talents that he uses to filter out which monsters he hires to work on Fear Co. According to his wife, Claire Wheeler, he will even hire former members of Monsters Inc. like Rosie Levin, Harley Gerson and Pete Ward who he believed they weren't meant to be jokesters in Monsters Inc.
Sometimes, Johnny wasn't too happy and impressed by some of the monsters that he hires. As demonstrated with Sulley and Randall, he will make good on kicking out members of his team if they prove detrimental or fail at a key point.
Appearance[]
He's a large and muscular humanoid monster with purple skin, pink eyes, a spiky tail, long devilish horns, and two bottom fangs. He wears a red and black business suit.
In his college years, he wore a jacket that represents his fraternity's name, Roar Omega Roar (RΩR in short).

Well, yeah, I don't know about that. Johnny: Hey, don't be so modest. You know, you remind me a lot of myself when I was your age. Tylor: I do? Johnny: After I graduated Monsters U, my father wanted me to join the family company. I said, "Join FearCo? Ugh". "Dad, that's your thing". But he said, "Scaring is our thing". Tylor: Thank you. I'm... That's enough. Johnny: My father always said, "You can't escape who you are, so just embrace it". Tylor: Just embrace it. Johnny: And to this day, I carry a memento around to remember that. Tylor: Whoa! Your dad's rookie card? That's... that's worth a fortune. Johnny: That's why I always keep it right here. It reminds me where I came from. You know, we're a Feartune 500 company now, But I guess I still see FearCo as a little family business. Tylor? Tylor: Oh, uh, family business. We have a hardware store. Johnny: Uh-huh. Do you wanna work in a hardware store, Tylor? Or do you want to be a top Scarer at FearCo? That's why I invited you to dinner. I wanna offer you a job. |

| “ | Tylor, welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. | „ |
| ~ Johnny. |
| “ | Johnny: Thank you. Thank you all for coming. We've all seen the news and how our friends at Monsters, Incorporated have had their issues, so we are expediting the unveiling of our Fear Co. scream amplifier that makes screams more powerful than laughs. We'll soon have more power than we know what to do with. And I am very excited to announce that we even have the former scarer turned jokester turned scarer again, Tylor "The Terrible" Tuskmon, joining the Fear Co. family. Look at him over there, huh? Isn't he something, folks? He's great. In fact, I'm promoting him to Vice President of Scaring. Tylor : What? Johnny: Number one on his first day. I haven't seen talent like that since... Well, me. |
„ |
| ~ Johnny. |
| “ | Johnny: WHY are you RUINING this? I told you, you can't escape who you are! Tylor: I'm not. I'm embracing it. And you should embrace who you are: a fraud. Johnny: A fraud? You ungrateful little- I gave you everything. If I'm a fraud, then what does that make you? Huh? HUH?? You're not funny enough to be a jokester, you're too afraid to be a scarer - the only thing you're good for is being a pawn! Fritz: He might be a pawn, but he's our pawn. You mess with him, you mess with all of us. Jack: Well, well, well, told you, Jill. Batting a thousand. Johnny: (gets surrounded by M.E.R.C.) Whoa, whoa, whoa. What is all this? Jill: M.E.R.C.? What are they doing here? Roz: Well, hello, everyone. Johnny: What? Officer 1: You're coming with us. Johnny: Hang on a second, you can't do this to me! Fritz: (hands M.E.R.C. a taped up Randall) Oh, hey, here's some trash for you. Officer 2: Thanks. Johnny: I'm a hero of this community! Roz: Your fraudulent Scream Amplifier scheme says otherwise. We've had someone on the inside too. (Chet reveals himself to be an agent of M.E.R.C. to Johnny) Johnny: Chet?!? Chet: Well, you should really treat your assistants better. Roz: You forgot one thing, Worthington, we're ALWAYS watching. Johnny: This is preposterous! You'll hear from my lawyers- eh- this- OW! That pinches! You're pushing, you're pushing-! Tylor: Sorry, Johnny. Looks like Laugh Power IS the future. Johnny: A city full of monsters will never get on board! You can't make kids laugh! You're a joke! You're a JOKE!! |

Trivia[]
- When Johnny was the main antagonist of Monsters University, he was more of a jerk in that film as he was causing grief and trouble for Mike and Sulley. But when he appeared in season 2 of Monsters At Work, he became a full-time villain, due to his scheme of sabotaging Monsters, Inc. to satisfy his belief of using scream power over laugh power.
- Despite his arrogance, the sets art director, Robert Kondo, explains that Johnny has something to lose, is afraid of failure, and has a tradition to live up to, implying that it's a front to mask his insecurities.
- A major plot hole in the episode, "Powerless", is the fact that Johnny was able to save Randall from the trailer, even though the door that he was banished through was destroyed in the first film. However, it might've been possible that Johnny may have an exact replicate of the door at Fear Co. that may have allowed him to enter the trailer and rescue Randall. This may also explain how he has the door that leads to Ben's room.
- Johnny is a foil to Henry J. Waternoose III:
- They are both chairmans that were in charge of companies that dealt with extracting scream power which had been in their families for generations. However, their companies were suffering due to circumstances, so they resorted to illegal schemes to keep from going under, all with the help of Randall Boggs. However, their reasons for wanting to do so differentiate.
- Monsters, Inc. was struggling to get more screams because children were not getting scared, so Waternoose tasked Randall to find a solution to save Monstropolis from the energy crisis. Randall created the scream extractor, a device meant to forcefully extract screams from children, but Waternoose only went along with using it because he thought there was no other choice.
- On the other hand, Johnny wanted to preserve his family legacy after the revelation that children laughs produce energy 10 times as powerful as screams. He also brought Randall onboard to help save Fear Co. saving him after he was banished by Mike and Sulley. He would have Randall sabotage Monsters, Inc. by stealing their laugh canisters, framing Tylor, and causing a city wide blackout, in an attempt to ruin their reputation and save Fear Co. from being shut down.
- They are both the thirds with their names in their respective families.
- They both have family members that they cared for:
- Waternoose has a son named Henry J. Waternoose IV, who broke ties with his father after learning of the latter's crimes. He even changes his name to Roger Rogers to avoid the scrutiny of being the son of a monster businessman who tried to kidnap children. Roger even confronted his father on the phone to see if the latter was involved with the vandalism at Monsters, Inc., only to learn at the end that Randall is responsible for it, and that Waternoose had nothing to do with it.
- Johnny married Claire Wheeler and had two children with her, showing a sense a faithfulness and duty for his wife and children. However, it remains unknown if Claire knew about Johnny's scheme or not. It's also unknown what happened to her and her children, following Johnny's arrest. Yet, Claire and her kids are pardoned for their involvement, due to their lack of interest and Claire not wanting her kids to become like their father, as they are aware of Johnny's scheme. However, it might be explained in Season 3.
- Surprisingly, not even Joy supports Johnny anymore, due to what he has done, as she quit her abusive nature and betrayed Fear Co., and joined Monsters Inc for a better life, while being fully aware that the jig is up.
- They both became mentor-like figures to one of their employees. They also betray their respective protégés by revealing their true colors.
- Waternoose was a mentor to Sullivan, but when Sullivan interfered with his plan to kidnap children and extract their screams by rescuing Boo, Waternoose reluctantly had both him and Mike Wazowski banished to the Himalayas.
- Johnny became a mentor to Tylor when he joined Fear Co. after he was accused of sabotaging Monsters, Inc., but then revealed that he purposely had Randall frame him in order to recruit him, which shocked Tylor.
- They were both exposed for their crimes, and they were both arrested. Coincidentally, they also ended up being life-sentenced cellmates), and as they were arrested, they attempted to demoralize the person who exposed them, only to be proven wrong later on.
- After Waternoose was exposed by Sullivan, he blamed Sullivan for destroying Monsters Inc. and that the power crisis will continue to get worse because of him, but Sullivan was able to save the company by switching from scream power to laugh power.
- After Worthington was exposed by Tylor, he told Tylor that the city will never be on board with relying on laugh power and that Tylor will never be a good jokester and that he himself is a joke, but Tylor was able to revitalize his career by forming a duo with Val.
- Comparing the two moral-wise, they are both on a very similar level, as Waternoose resorted to kidnapping children and extracting their screams with the scream extractor, (though to be fair he only did it out of desperation to solve the energy crisis of the time), plus he has shown remorse for betraying Sulley and Mike to cover his tracks, which might make him the less evil of the two villains. Whilst Johnny, on the other hand, was willing to sabotage Monsters, Inc. and steal their power of laughter before mixing it with the power of screams, not only to protect his family's legacy, but also to uphold the tradition of monsters scaring children. Also, it never occurred to Johnny that mixing the power of laughter and screaming would be disastrous (as Tylor pointed out), which would have caused a great catastrophe affecting the world of monsters (although, to be fair, he didn't know that either).
- Johnny also serves as a dark parallel of the following characters:
- James P. Sullivan: They were both Roar Omega Roar members who are well-established Scarers, to which they felt proud of what they were as fraternity members. However, once Sulley got transferred from his original fraternity to Oozma Kappa, he gradually starts to humble himself down, where he even befriended fellow OK member, Mike Wazowski and the others as well. On the other hand, Johnny never knew when to slow down his pride even while he's still part of RΩR, to the point where he dismissed RΩR newcomer Randall Boggs out of humiliation. If Sulley hadn't understood the value of humility as a former Scarer himself, he would've ended up acting like Johnny.
- Tylor Tuskmon: Besides going to the same college, they both worked at Fear Co. But even though Tylor initially wanted to be a scarer, he was quick to discover the harmful nature of the job after having done so to his human friend, Ben, making him immediately regret it. Johnny, on the other hand, thought that fear was power, and that scaring kids could keep the city's power on. Johnny serves an example of what Tylor would've become if he continued to let his scarer ego consume him and prevent him from realizing the harmful effects of scaring children.
- Since Johnny was seen in his teens years during the events of Monsters University, this would technically make him the second Pixar main antagonist to not be an adult (though he is one in Monsters at Work), after Sid Phillips from Toy Story (who is later seen as an adult in Toy Story 3), and is followed by Ercole Visconti from Luca. As a bonus, Johnny is the only non-adult Pixar villain who isn't a human.
