Toto is Dorothy Gale's pet dog in Return to Oz. He is based on the one of the same name in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Appearances[]
Return to Oz[]
In Return to Oz, Toto was with Dorothy on her first trip to Oz, but when she's taken to the hospital, he barks at her as though he knows something is going to happen.
In the end, he manages to track her down after Ozma uses the ruby slippers to send her home to Kansas. After witnessing Ozma in Dorothy's mirror, he joins her to go outside and play.
Timon & Pumbaa[]
Toto makes a cameo appearance with Dorothy in the episode "Broadway Bound & Gagged".
Teacher's Pet: The Movie[]
Toto and Dorothy also made a cameo appearance in the song "A Whole Bunch of World", specifically in the part about Kansas when they were picked up by the twister.
Appearances in other media[]
The Muppets' Wizard of Oz[]
In The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, instead of being a dog, Toto is a king prawn, rescued from Aunt Em's Diner by Dorothy since Aunt Em won't allow her to have a dog. He is one of her few friends in Kansas, and she rushes back into the trailer to rescue him during the tornado.
Once transported to Oz, however, Toto, having broken out of his tank, has enlarged, is nude, and speaks with a Spanish accent. Dorothy supplies him with costuming, and he (portrayed by Pepe the King Prawn) tries to become her agent in return.
Once Upon a Time[]
Toto makes two appearances in the ABC fantasy series' fifth season, as the dog to Dorothy Gale. He first appears in the episode "Our Decay" , where it is revealed that Toto was given to Dorothy by Aunt Em, as she was the only one who believed her story about visiting Oz. However, Todo was given to Dorothy just before her aunt passed away.
Years later, shown in "Ruby Slippers", while in Oz, Toto senses who Dorothy believes is a witch because of his previous reaction to Zelena. Upon meeting Red Riding Hood and Mulan, Dorothy is informed that Toto only ran off because he sensed the smell of Ruby, who tells Dorothy she is part dog. However, as Ruby/Red attempts to pet Toto, he runs off, much to Dorothy's annoyance, who tries to follow him and find her dog. Red offers to help, but Dorothy denies, blaming her for the dog disappearing, until Red reveals she can smell Toto because of being a werewolf. Seeing this as useful, Dorothy allows Red to help her find her dog.
Toto is later revealed to have been captured and put in a cage, but is able to escape by unknown means, but Dorothy has been put under a sleeping curse by Zelena, and Mulan and some munchkins have found Dorothy's body. Toto is seen lying near his sleeping owner as he senses somebody coming and barks. Toto continues to bark as Mulan asks him what is wrong and Ruby materializes seconds later. Toto lies as he watches Ruby give Dorothy a kiss of true love, which awakens her and frees her from the sleeping curse, as the munchkins, Mulan, and Snow White watch in awe. Toto lets out a happy bark upon seeing his owner awaken.
Trivia[]
