Whether or not Facilier resides here, or merely uses the place as his basis for black magic, is unknown. However, it is made clear that his friends of the other side reside there.
What becomes of the Voodoo Emporium after Facilier's demise at the climax remains unknown.
Layout[]
Hidden in a dark, shady alley of the French Quarters of New Orleans, the building is filled with caskets, voodoo dolls and masks, African drums, and various other items and material linking to voodoo rituals. The exact size varies, as it would appear to be rather large when Facilier concocts one of his spells, as seen when he turns Prince Naveen into a frog. The front door is wooden with Voodoo symbols drawn on the door in different colors.
Trivia[]
The walls of the alley in which the Emporium is located, primarily around and on its door, are decorated with various symbols called veves, which are used to invoke or represent loa (voodoo spirits). Each loa has their own specific veve.
The veves seen in the film are either obscure or appear to be wholly original, not symbols used in the real world.
In a corner next to the Emporium's entrance is a nkondi, a statuette embedded with many nails originating from the Kongo people of Africa. Nkondi are a variety of spirit-possessed objects that are considered aggressive, and function to house spirits that will witness deals, attack the owner's enemies, and protect certain locations.
Ironically, they were traditionally used to defend against witches and evildoers.
The concept of poking "voodoo dolls" with needles to cause harm (which Facilier is shown to do) is thought to have been erroneously associated with African traditions (such as voodoo) due to a misunderstanding of the nkondi's function.
