Captain Killian Jones (better known as Hook) is a character who appears in ABC's fantasy series Once Upon a Time. He is one of the main characters in the series and the son of Brennan Jones and the younger brother to Liam Jones. He is also the husband to protagonist Emma Swan, and the father to both Henry Mills (stepfather to the latter) and Hope.
Background[]
Captain Hook appears in the ABC fantasy/drama and is portrayed by Colin O'Donoghue. Before becoming Captain Hook, he was known as Killian Jones. Originally a guest, Hook soon became one of the show's primary characters, becoming Emma Swan's main love interest. Colin O'Donoghue portrayed Hook from Season 2-7. In Season 7, he portrayed the Wish Realm version of Hook and his cursed counterpart, Rogers.
Killian Jones and his brother were born in the 19th century[1] to Brennan Jones, who abandoned his sons by selling them to trade.

- Magic of the Dark One: After his fight with King Arthur in Camelot, Hook's neck gets a minor cut from Excalibur, which can never be fully healed, causing Hook to begin to eventually die. Unwilling to let this happen, Emma uses her dark magic to tether Hook to the sword instead of Merlin. The Darkness inside Merlin flies out of him and Hook is teleported away and emerged from the Vault of the Dark One as its new host. As the Dark One, Hook was given dark magical powers by the knowledge of the Holy Grail and the Darkness itself, so he don't need to learn the magical arts as other practitioners of magic do.

- Dark One's Dagger: Anyone who owns his dagger will be able to kill Hook, causing him to lose its status as the Dark One and the chance to rise again. In addition, anyone who owns the dagger also has full control over the his actions, who is unable to disobey orders if not for a very short time.
- Laws of Magic: Like any magician or sorcerer, Hook was subject to the laws of magic, as a result he was unable to raise the dead, create love and time travel.
- Squid Ink: Like all magical beings, Hook could be immobilized with squid ink.

Killian and Liam learnt to fend for themselves and worked on a ship, where Liam wanted to earn a navy comision, while Killian spent a lot of time struggling with work and drank on the job. When Killian was unconcious from alcholisum, Liam sacrificed a navy commission for his brother and quickly learnt that their captain was guiding them head first into a dangerous storm. When Liam took over after the captain was too determined to look for the Eye of the Storm, Killian was tasked with tieing up the crew when Liam, unknowlist to Killian, was visited by Hades, the god of the Underworld, who offered him the gem and survival in exchange for the grew members' lives. While Killian was knocked out, Liam accepted this deal and the brothers managed to make it to shore, where they were greeted by other navy officers, who congratulated them on finding the Eye of the Storm, as well as offering them a navy commission on his ship, the Jewel of the Realm.

A number of years into their careers in the navy, Killian and Liam were sent by their king to find a plant known as Dreamshade, which they were told could heal an entire kingdom. They arrived at an island known as Neverland, where they met a teenage boy named Peter Pan who lived there and asked for his help finding the plant. When Liam asked Pan where he and Killian could find it, Pan informed them that their king was not what they believed he was like, as Pan revealed that Dreamshade was actually a deadly plant that could kill someone in an instant. While Killian became worried about this information, Liam did not believe Pan's warnings and believed the young boy was playing games with them, although Killian did believe him. While searching for the plant, they came across a spring and found it. Killian tried to tell Liam about what Peter Pan had told them, trying to convince his brother that they should not get it for the king if what they had been told was true. However, a stubbon Liam used the poison on himself as a way to prove to his brother that the Dreamshade was fine, but quickly started to sucome to his injuries, until Killian begged for Peter Pan to help him save his brother. Pan gave Killian a flask of the spring water that was filled with magic that could heal any injury, although it came with a price: once someone would drink the spring water, they would never be able to leave Neverland, but Killian gave it to Liam anyway and ignored the warnings. Once Liam had been restored back to full health, he started to collapse once more as the ship had left the waters of Neverland, and he died in his brother's arms, but not before apologizing to Killian. Killian and the crew members buried Liam at sea and Killian became the new captain, whilst renaming their ship the Jolly Roger.

Some time after, Killian seduces away Rumplestiltskin's wife, Milah. Milah, who was tired of the then cowardly Rumple's persona, gladly left both the feeble peasant and her son behind in order to live a life with Jones. After becoming the master of black magic, Rumple confronts Killian and Milah, killing the latter and removing the hand of Jones as revenge. He replaces his hand with a hook, thus receiving his alias as Captain Hook. He once again travels to Neverland, where he finds and takes care of Rumplestiltskin's son, Baelfire, after he is separated from his father Rumplestiltskin. He forms an unlikely friendship with him, until Bae learns that Hook took Milah from his father. He hands Bae over to the Lost Boys, who take him to Peter Pan.

Years into his pirate life, he and William Smee are stealing from the king when they come across a man who was attacked by the queen's guards. Hook saves this man but kills him after he sees Killian kill the guards. Around this time, Hook also steals Ursula's siren call at some point in the past.
Over a century after Liam's death, Hook is tasked by Evil Queen Regina in killing her mother Cora, but wants to see if he is right for the challenge, so tasks him with killing a man in a bar. When Killian enters, he learns the man is his father, Brennan Jones, who abandoned Killian years earlier and somehow is still alive. Killian approaches his father and learns he was put under a sleeping curse before being woken up by a true loves kiss from his nurse who he went onto marry before she died. Killian believes his Brennan has changed for the better and gives him a safe passage to escape as the queen needs to believe Brennan is dead. However the following night, Killian arrives at his father's home and learns he has a new son, also named Liam, which greatly angers Killian as he believes his father is replacing his late brother Liam, although Brennan claims he is honouring him. However, Killian doesn't believe Brennan as he witnessed him saying the same thing to his new son, that he said to Killian the night before he sold him to solitude. Killian kills his father whose final words are that he thinks his son can change.
In the weeks leading up to the dark curse being cast, Snow White and Prince David visit Hook to ask them for safe passage on his ship, and they offer him jewels. Hook sings about wanting his revenge on a crocodile, due to a wish, and Snow and Charming realize that Hook is referring to the Dark One, Rumplestiltskin. They promise Hook to hand the Dark One over to him so he can get his revenge if he agrees to allow them to use his ship. Although Hook agrees, he, Snow and David, along with the rest of the kingdom, end up losing their memories of any of this by the next morning as the spell wears off.
Some time after this, Hook decides to go through with Regina's orders to kill Cora, but he is caught by her guards in Wonderland. She offers to help him get his revenge on Rumplestiltskin and they form an alliance.

When the Dark Curse was activated, Cora protected them both and part of the Enchanted Forest with a barrier spell, frozen in time for 28 years. During these years while Mr.Smee was cursed, the rest of Hook's crew members were at sea, when a storm brewed and Hook was rescued by Captain Nemo who took him aboard his ship. Nemo tried to help Hook. With one of the crew members, Hook and Nemo went to an island for treasure, but Hook was attacked by a krakken before being saved. However, while back on the ship, Hook learnt that the other crew member that saved him was Liam, his half-brother, who wanted to kill Hook for killing their father. Hook wanted to leave and a vengance filled Liam tried to kill him, but Nemo stepped in front and took the stab for Hook.

28 years later, Hook is found by Mary Margret, Aurora, Emma, and Mulan, pretending to be a blacksmith hiding in between the dead bodies of the people that Cora ripped the hearts out of. He reveals himself as Captain Hook when they tie him to a tree. Hook reveals his and Cora's plan to learn about Storybrooke and promises to find a magical bean to get Snow and Emma home. Emma and Hook climb a beanstalk where they learn more about each other. When they reach the top, Hook flirts with Emma but she rebuffs him and leaves him after getting the compass that will help them get home. However, Hook is able to get down and reunite with Cora, who takes him to Lake Nostos where she brings back the magical waters.

After fighting Emma, Hook follows her and Mary Margaret to Storybrooke with Cora, through a magic bean obtained by Hook. When Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) finds a way to leave Storybrooke without losing his memories, Hook shoots his love Belle, causing her to fall across the town's border and lose her memory again. Hook is then hit by a stranger who drives into town, causing Hook to be badly injured with broken bones and is attacked by Gold, before Emma and David stops him. Emma takes Hook to hospital, where he is treated and spends the next few days. Even in his weakened state, Hook is happy he hurt Rumplestitskin's heart, that being Belle. A few days later, Hook is released from hospital with help by David and Mary Margret, who question him about Cora's plans. Hook reveals that Cora is holding Anton the giant hostage, until he is freed and helps the townspeople grow magical beans so they can return to the Enchanted Forest.
Hook later learns that Greg and Tamara plan on blowing up Storybrooke as they believe magic is unholy and should not exist. Hook informs Emma and her family of what is going on, so they decide to stop them, but Hook does not want to join and steals the magical bean from Emma, preventing the town from being saved. However, after the town is saved, Hook has a change of heart and returns to Storybrooke, where he offers to help Emma, Regina, Mary Margret, Mr. Gold and David rescue Henry, who Greg and Tamara took through a portal. The group realise that Henry has been taken to Neverland and Hook offers his ship to take them through a portal to the legendary island, where they learn Henry has been taken.

Upon arrival, Hook acts as the group's tour guide because of his expertise from living here in the past. After Emma encounters Peter Pan, she receives a blank map, which can only be accessed by Emma accepting who she really is. During this time, Emma and Hook spend some time together and he tells her he would like to know who she really is after she is able to accept who she is, but she walks away before answering him. Following Pan's map north, Hook realises that he keeps changing the location of the camp to mess with the heroes, so Hook suggests getting help from Tinker Bell, who Hook crossed paths with years ago, but she refuses to help because she doesn't have fairy dust or her wings, but Mary Margret promises to take her with them when the group leave with Henry. While being ambushed by Lost Boys, Hook is the only one who notices that David has been hit by Dreamshade, which is the deadliest plant on the island and can kill a being overtime. Noticing that David is struggling, Hook tells him that he is aware of his condition and tells him he only has days or weeks at most to live. Hook deduces that David should tell Mary Margret the truth but he keeps it to himself in case he can find a cure. Back at the base, Tink wants to know the escape plan only to learn that they don't have one even though a plan is the only way to get off the island as no one has ever left Neverland without Pan's permission. When David asks Hook how he got off the island, Hook reveals Pan let him go and used special fairy dust that Pan gave him.
Hook explains that Neal spent some time in Neverland and takes the group to where he spent a lot of his time. While in the cave, they find Neal's old starlight that he created and Hook explains that he taught Neal how to be a pirate, which meant navigating the stars but also how to speak in morse code, meaning that only Neal can read the star map. Before Emma exits, Hook expresses sympathy towards her about losing hope since he has experienced it as well, though Emma rejects his attempt at bonding with her and walks out. Disheartened, Hook moves to leave, but David is well aware of Hook's feelings for his daughter, and bluntly tells him she will never like him as he is just a pirate, which greatly offends Hook. When David decides to look for more wood, Hook joins him and again tells him he needs to tell his family about the Dreamshade, as he only has a small amount of time left. They climb up the hill, but David starts to pass out so Hook climbs the rest of the way where he is greeted by Pan. Pan offers Hook to work with him once more in exchange for leaving Neverland with Emma and Henry, although Hook declines as he knows Emma would never leave Henry. David awakens but tries to fight Hook as he believes he is leaving him here to die. Hook is able to stop David and gives him the special water from the spring that he once used on his brother Liam Jones two century's ago, that will get rid of the dreamshade and save David's life. However, before giving it to David, Hook warns him that the water does come with a price in the fact that if drunk, David can't ever leave the island as the connection will be broken. David accepts this and is cured. When Hook and David return to the camp, he praises the pirate for saving his life.

When Emma learns Hook saved her father's life, she kisses him as a thank you, and although she claims it to be only a one time thing, the kiss makes Hook realise he is in love with her. Shortly afterwards, Peter Pan approaches Hook again and informs him that Neal is alive and in Neverland. Hook later shares this with Mary Margret and David, who tell Emma. They learn that Neal is in the Echo cave and Hook reveals in order to save him, everyone must reveal a secret, which leads to David revealing to Mary Margret that he can't leave Neverland because he was hit with Dreamshade and the cure means he will die if he leaves. This revelation causes serious tension between Emma's parents, while Hook reveals to Emma that he has feelings for her and the kiss meant more to him than he thought. Neal is soon rescued and expresses his feelings for Emma, which Hook overhears. Neal realises the can use Pan's shadow to escape the island. Hook, Emma and Neal later travel to a cave where they are attacked by Pan's shadow and the men argue over Emma, who calls them out for their behaviour. Hook tells her that she will have to choose between him and Neal, but she tells them both she chooses Henry. After showing Tinker bell proof of the Shadow as their ticket off the island, she agrees to do her part in taking down Pan.
Regina and Mr. Gold decide to get Pandora's Box with Ariel's help as she swims to Storybrooke to speak to Belle and retrieve the box. Although successful, Pan overpowers Rumple and traps him in the box instead and the family learn from Wendy Darling that Pan is using Henry to retain his youth by tricking him into giving him his heart, which will kill Henry. Upon arriving at Skull Rock, the family witness Henry giving Pan his heart as he believes he is saving magic, which kills Henry and Hook, who stayed behind, feels a powerful wave of magic through Neverland. Hook returns to camp and learns that Henry gave his heart to Pan, from Emma. Emma manages to get some of the Lost Boys to open up about Pan's current location at his "thinking tree" in Pixie Woods after promising to bring them off the island. While Emma, Mary Margaret and Regina go to find Pan, Hook and the rest of their party plan to regroup aboard the Jolly Roger to prepare for departure. Emma, Mary Margret and Regina return to the ship with Henry's heart, which is put back inside him and he is revived. Upon Henry's revival, Hook offers to let him rest in the captain's quarters of the ship, where Henry is aided by Regina. Regina casts a protection spell on her son's heart so no one can ever take it again, but Pan appears and tries to take his shadow while Hook steers the ship out of Neverland, with the shadow allowing the ship to take flight. Henry is saved by Mr. Gold who traps Pan inside Pandora's box, although Pan manages to switch bodies with Henry without anyone being aware.

Once having landed in Storybrooke, Mr. Gold places the box inside a compartment of his shop so that Pan get out, unaware that it is actually Henry inside. Hook decides to back off from Emma to allow Neal to have a fair chance with her so they can be a family with Henry. To distract himself from Emma, Hook offers Tinker Bell a drink, although she is able to see straight through his flirting and declines him. Outside, the Blue Fairy is killed by Pan's shadow although David asks how that is possible as it is supposed to have been trapped on the Jolly Roger. Hook, Neal and Tinker Bell go to fetch the lighter and coconut halves from the ship in case they need to catch the Shadow again. They attempt to enter the vault where Regina took Henry to keep him safe, but the door is locked. Belle, Emma, David, Mary Margaret and Mr. Gold bring back a released Pan, who is actually Henry, since the two switched bodies. When Mr. Gold breaks open the vault, it is discovered Pan took the scroll for the dark curse.
Mr Gold explains that Pan has stolen the curse Regina cast originally and it can be cast with Pan's desires, explaining that one curse can be used more than once. Regina learns she is able to stop the curse, but it comes at a price that she will have to pay. The group plans on switching Henry and pan back to their original bodies and while successful, Pan manages to steal the curse off of Henry and freezes the whole town. Mr. Gold confronts his father and kills the sinister man-child, but at the cost of his own life. With both Pan and Mr. Gold dead, the curse is still coming and Regina figures out she is able to stop it but at the cost of saying goodbye to the thing she loves most: Henry. Regina reveals she has no choice but to send Emma and Henry across the town line with new memories while everyone else, including Hook, is sent back to the Enchanted Forest. Hook privately says goodbye to Emma, telling her he will never stop thinking of her. Emma and Henry then cross the town line as everyone else returns to the Enchanted Forest once more.

Upon arriving back, Hook decided to leave the group, telling Snow and Charming that while the Enchanted Forest was their home, Hook's was the Jolly Roger and planned on finding it once again. Snow expressed her disappointment that Hook was going back to being a pirate now that Emma had gone, and he told her that he was always a pirate before leaving on horseback.
Hook reunited with Smee and the other pirates upon regaining his ship and as a treat for the captain, Smee and the rest of the pirates gained enough money to hire a woman to spend the night with Hook, but he declined her and gave her the money regardless, because he was still in love with Emma.
During this time, Hook was approached by Ariel, who thought he had kidnapped her beloved Prince Eric. However, Hook was innocent and helped her find the culprit, Black Beard, who had stolen the Jolly Roger. In order to get his ship back, Hook betrayed Ariel's trust and chose not to save Eric. At some point, Hook received a message telling him to find Emma in New York after Zelena's curse. He thought Snow White had sent the message, but it was actually Neal.
During the Second Curse[]

One year later, Hook arrives in New York City and finds Emma, who has no memory of the man at her door. Hook tries to jog Emma's memories with true loves kiss, although she rebuffs him and kicks him out despite telling her that her family is in danger, which she does not believe. Hook later turns up at a restruaunt where Emma is having a date with her boyfriend, Walsh, and tries to apologise for kissing her, explaining he was trying to simply jog her memories. Later in a park, Emma finds Killian but has him arrested for harrassing her, but he gives her photos before she does this. Hook then spends 24 hours in jail, before Emma bails him out and demands an explaination, but starts to believe him. Emma decides to drink the potion Killian gives her and her memories are restored, much to Hook's delight. With Emma's memories restored, she breaks up with Walsh (who is revealed to be a flying monkey) and returns to Storybrooke with Henry and Killian, who Emma tells Henry is a client.

Upon arriving in town, Emma is reunited with her parents and learns they are cursed again, but have no idea who cursed them. Hook explains that he remembers what happened within the past year and tells Mary Margret and David that they ended up in the Enchanted Forest and went on their way to the Queen's castle, although he did not join them on their journey there. Hook and the townsfolk try to figure out who cursed them, but later deduce that it is the Wicked Witch of the West after noticing flying monkeys in town and the person escaped Emma and Regina's trap by poofing away in a cloud of green smoke. Emma and Hook later continue their search for the wicked witch, they come across a farmhouse and he asks her if she was considering Walsh's proposal, which Emma confirms, although she got her heartbroken because he wasn't who he said he was. When they arrive at the farmhouse, Emma calls David and he joins them, in which they realise that the wicked witch must have revived Rumplestiltskin as they find his old spinning wheel and gold string attached to it.
Upon this revelation, Hook, Emma and David visit Belle and tell her of this news. David and Emma go and search for him while Hook offers to help Belle. While Hook is with Belle, Neal falls through the door and she and Hook take him to the hospital, where Emma is reunited with Neal, but finds a mark on his hand and has Belle examine it. Hook looks after Neal and reconciles with him over their previous fight over Emma in Neverland, hugging Neal and remembering him as the boy he looked after many decades ago. Hook lets Neal leave, but he is later killed when he asks Emma to separate him and his father. Belle and Hook are later informed of Neal's death and attend his funeral along with the rest of the citizens.

Hook offers to look after Henry while Emma searches for the Wicked Witch, who is later revealed to be Zelena, Mary Margret and David's midwife. Killian takes Henry to a boat and tells him about having known his father, which Henry finds fun. After this, Hook is reunited with Ariel who is looking for her Prince Eric, and Hook and Belle offer to help her find her beloved. Although the locator spell works, Ariel believes Eric to be dead, and Hook reveals that he hasn't been entirely truthful with her, telling her he encountered Eric in the past and Ariel gets Hook to swear on the name of the woman he loves. Hook swears on Emma's name revealing he is still in love with her, but Ariel is revealed to really be Zelena, who curses Hook's lips and blackmails him into kissing Emma, although Hook keeps this a secret from Emma.
Hook later joins Emma, Regina, David and Mary Margret in performing a seance' to communicate with Regina and Zelena's mother, Cora, to learn as to why Cora gave Zelena up and while a portal opens, Cora refuses to speak to Regina and the communication portal closes. However, Cora's ghost later escapes the portal and possesses Mary Margret, to tell her why she was forced to give Zelena up and that she didn't want to. It is revealed that Cora was forced to give up Zelena by Princess Eva, Snow's mother, and that Zelena plans on travelling back in time to kill Eva, which would mean Snow, Emma and Henry would never be born. Some time later, Hook takes Henry to the docks where a flying monkey attacks them and Snow, Regina, Emma and David come to the rescue as Hook fails to kill one of the monkeys. Zelena captures Henry and tells Hook he failed her which worries Emma and Zelena then releases Henry and teleports away. Henry gets his memories back and Regina kisses him with true loves kiss, breaking the curse in the process.
After the Second Curse[]

With the curse now broken, everyone regains their memories and Snow reveals that she and David cast the curse, not Zelena, in hopes of reuniting with Emma. David informs Hook that he and Snow did not send him a memory potion even though he got one (which is revealed to have been sent by Neal). Hook reveals to Emma that Zelena cursed his lips and planned to make him kiss her, so her magic would disappear. Meanwhile, Mary Margret goes into labor and gives birth to her and David's son. Emma is tasked with taking Hook with her to confront Zelena by orders from her father. When Hook and Emma later confront Zelena about the curse, she throws him in a pool, where Hook starts to drown. Emma sacrifices her magic by giving Hook the kiss of life, which saves Hook's life, even though he calls her out for sacrificing her magic for his sake. Zelena is able to steal the newborn from Snow's grip and Hook, David, Emma and Regina confront Zelena, who is almost killed by Mr. Gold, until he is stopped by Regina. The baby is returned to Snow and Hook apologises for making Emma lose her magic, although she says it is okay because she won't need it in New York, which greatly disappoints Killian.
A few days later, Hook informs the family that Emma plans on taking Henry back to New York, despite him knowing Storybrooke is their home and that this is where their family is. Emma leaves and Hook offers to go after her, but not before Henry gives him the Storybrooke to hopefully remind Emma of where she belongs. Hook tries to speak to Emma about staying here, but she refuses as she doesn't feel like she belongs in a world with princes and princesses, until they notice Zelena's time portal having been opened despite her having died. Emma and Hook inspect the portal and he asks her if she has her magic back yet, which she tells him she hasn't. Not wanting to mess with this, Hook tries to get Emma to turn around and head back, but she falls through the portal and Hook follows her.

The two ended up in the Enchanted Forest and realised they had travelled back in time as they had opened Henry's storybooke and it took them back to the time where the events in the book took place. Hook asked Emma how they could get back and realised they were at the point in time where her parents, Snow White and Prince Charming met, after seeing Snow's wanted posters tied to a tree, which ruined the original story and her parents' first meting. Emma suggested they needed Rumplestiltskin's help to get home and were greeted by him outside his castle. Since they were in the past, Rumplestitskin was still determined to kill Hook at this point in time, before Emma managed to stop him. Hook and Emma managed to convince Rumple that they were from the future and learnt they had to put the story back on track. As part of their plan, Hook tried to get Snow White to steal Charming's ring while Emma seduced his past self, much to present-Hook's jealousy. Later on, they attended a ball under the aliases of Prince Charles and Princess Leila. They danced and shared a moment before the Evil Queen, Regina came looking for Snow White and arrested Emma, leaving Hook behind.
The following day, Hook came across Snow White and Prince Charming as he trapped her in a tree for her crimes. Hook asked them to help him rescue "Lelia" from the Queen's castle, which used to belong to Snow White before the queen banished her out. The three travelled to the castle while Emma managed to escape and ran into Hook, who noticed she had rescued Marian from execusion, despite Hook's previous warning about changing the past, as Marian was always meant to die. The group left but Snow White was sentenced to death by the queen and supposibly died. However, Emma was still there despite the belief she should have disappeared from existance if Snow was dead, With this information, Hook and Emma realised Snow would have survived and did so by turning herself into a bug so that the queen thought she had died. Snow White was transformed back to human but didn't recognise Emma, which broke her heart, which brought Hook and Emma closer.
Hook and Emma start a relationship.
After succeeding in restoring the timeline, Emma and Hook returned to the past with Marian (who was actually replaced by Zelena, Regina's half-sister), who Emma didn't know who she was. Upon reuniting with her parents, Emma decided she and Henry belonged in Storybrooke, while Hook stayed outside. Hook was later drinking outside when Emma came to speak to him. During their conversation, Hook explained that everything went back to normal as he would have remembered the kiss his past self shared with Emma, but he didn't. His life went on as normal. When Emma asked how Hook managed to get back to her and bring her back to Storbrooke, he revealed he traded his prised possession, the Jolly Roger. With this reveal, Emma realised how much Killian loved her and they began an official relationship.
During the start of Season 4, Hook's love for Emma would be put to the test after discovering that Gold was still in control of the dagger and has not changed. Killian and David work together to rescue Emma from an ice wall that Elsa accidentally traps them both inside of. Emma and Killian go on their first real date where he is given is hand back from Rumplestitskin, but Killian is worried having his hand back is turning him back into his old ways.
When Hook threatened to tell Belle and later Emma about using the knife, Gold in turn threatened Hook into doing his bidding by vowing to reveal Hook's dark side again, and later on while attempting to save Emma from Gold's plan to strip her of her powers, loses his heart to Gold, making Hook his puppet to use him to get what he wants. Soon afterwards, Gold tasks Hook with using the Sorcerer's Hat to drain the Fairies' magic, in order to kill the cure for the Spell of Shattered Sight, and to obtain enough power to free himself from the Dagger of Kris. Hook reluctantly agrees to the task, since Gold has his heart, and traps the fairies in the hat after Gold convinces Belle to leave Granny's Diner.

When Emma and Elsa later arrive with Anna and Kristoff, Hook hides behind the counter, leading them to believe that the Fairies had been dealt with by the Snow Queen. With his job complete, Hook gives the hat to Gold, who tells him to enjoy the last day of his life wherever he wants, because when Gold completes his final preparations by the next morning, he will kill Hook. When the Spell of Shattered Sight was close to engulfing Storybrooke, Hook visits Emma one last time to say goodbye to her, before leaving to chain himself to a dock at the marina. When the Spell of Shattered Sight finally hits, Hook looks on as thunder rumbles and mirror shards rain from the sky. After the Spell of Shattered Sight was ended, Gold tried to kill Hook to free himself from his dagger, only to be stopped by Belle. Emma later restores Hook's heart to his body.
After Rumple is banished from Storybrooke, Killian works with Belle in the library to find a way to release the fairies from the hat for 6 weeks but can't, until Regina is able to enact a spell to release them. Meanwhile Gold returns to Storybrooke along with Urusla, Cruella De Vil and Maleficent, who reveals that Mr. Gold plans on turning Emma's heart dark. Killian becomes greatly concerned upon hearing this information, especially after she is avoiding her parents who kept a secret from her of something they did years ago, before Emma was born, but Killian helps Emma forgive her parents, after Mary Margret is almost killed by Lily Page.
Hook in the alternate reality.
When the author creates an alternate reality, Killian is still a pirate in this world, but is a lot more cowardly. He meets Henry Mills who introduces Killian to his mother, Emma, who Killian quickly falls for. Emma remembers her life, recongizing this man as an alternate version of her boyfriend. While on the Jolly Roger, Emma and Killian bond and he offers her a drink, although it is not rum, but milk as this version of Killian is allergic to rum. Killian is later killed by the queen's guards, who in this reality is Snow White instead of Regina. Emma is able to return to the real world, where she is reunited with Killian. The couple embrace and Emma almost tells Killian she loves him before stopping herself, but the darkness takes over the town and Emma sacrifices herself to the darkness so that Regina doesn't become a Dark One. Killian tries to stop Emma and she tells him she loves him as she becomes the new Dark One.
Before the Third Curse[]

Immediately after Emma becomes the Dark One to save Regina from the burden, Hook tries to summon her, but she does not appear, with the family realising this is because she is not in this realm. After tricking Zelena into summoning a cyclone, Regina uses it with Emma's family and some of the people in Granny's to find Emma, by using her baby blanket to locate her. They suddenly arrive in Camelot and stop Emma from crushing Merida's heart. Hook embraces Emma and he and the family tell Emma that they have arrived to try and find a way to free Emma from the darkness and destroy it.

After meeting King Arthur, Hook and the others are welcomed to a ball in their honor, as Regina claims to be the Savior now that Emma is the Dark One. Hook and Emma share a dance, but Robin is attacked and on the verge of death, so Regina begs Emma to use her magic to save him, despite her now having dark magic. Robin is saved and Emma kisses Hook, before feeling drained and needing rest. Shortly after this, Hook is in attendance when David is knighted as a member of the round table after saving Robin. After seeing Emma distressed as she is having visions of Rumplestiltskin manipulating her, Killian aids her and they notice Henry has taken a liking to a Camelot local, Violet Morgan, to which Killian teases his son-figure of having a crush. Upon seeing Violet take Henry horse riding, Hook decides to do the same with Emma and takes her to a meadow of flowers to try and get her to stop thinking of the demon in her head. Upon returning back, Emma starts feeling weak so Killian looks after her.
Killian learns that Emma is trying to get Merlin's help now that he has been freed from the tree, as Merlin should be able to help Emma destroy the darkness. Before Emma leaves, Killian gives her a ring that he claims is the reason he is alive, after she believes he is proposing, which he claims he isn't. While Emma and Merlin are on their adventure, Hook and Robin learn that King Arthur has been deceiving everyone and been working with Zelena. Later that night, Hook and Robin venture out into the woods and discuss that Arthur is a dishonourable king and that he has been tricking everyone into thinking he cares for his people.
Hook becomes a Dark One
The following morning, Hook and Emma reunite and discuss their future, to which is revealed that Hook and Henry have been looking for a house for him and Emma once they return to Storybrooke so they can have the future they want. Killian is worried Emma doesn't want a future with him, but she tells him she does and tells him she loves him. However, Hook is injured and starts to die from Excalibur stabbing him. He tries to tell Emma she can still have a future without him, but she is desperate to save the man she loves, so Emma turns Hook into a dark one, saving his life. As soon as the Darkness enters Hook, he suddenly appears from the Vault of the Dark One and like Emma, sees a vision of Rumplestiltskin, who tries to encourage Killian to embrace the darkness. Unfortunately even though Hook tries to not let the demon in his head persuade him, he quickly gives into the darkness and vows to get his revenge on the real Rumplestiltskin like he did all those years before.

Now having fully embraced the darkness, Killian confronts Emma who tries to persuade him she turned him into a dark one to save him. The two argue about his transition in the forest and she accidentally commands him to stop, which angers Killian even though Emma tells him she didn't mean to do that. Emma promises to never control Killian again as well as trying to find a way to get the darkness out of both of them, and tells him she loves him. Stunned upon hearing Emma's words, Killian tells her he loves her too and the couple kiss passionately. While Emma tries to find a way to save herself and Killian, he aquires Merlin's heart to enact a dark curse, and while Merlin tells him he wouldn't do it with Emma's heart, Killian reveals that he summoned Nimue's spirit to do it. Emma rushes in and tries to stop Killian from casting the curse but she is unable to stop him. Nimue grabs Merlin's heart and gives it to Hook, which enacts the dark curse.
Before the curse takes effect, everyone returns to Granny's and Emma puts him and everyone else to sleep. Unable to stop the curse, Emma erases everyone's memories of their time in Camelot, including Hook's. This allows Killian to be unaware that he ever became a dark one and cast the curse, reverting him back to the man Emma loves and who loves her, before he became a Dark One. The curse then takes Granny's diner and everyone inside, back to Storybrooke, without anyone knowing what really happened.
During the Third Curse[]
With his memories erased, Hook desperately tries to get through to Emma and find out exactly what happened in Camelot. However, Emma refused to give answers but instead tried to restart their relationship, stating they could still be together even if she is the Dark One. Hook refused to give into Emma's desires and broke off their relationship as he couldn't be with Emma when she is not herself. Sometime later, Hook, David, and Robin Hood went to confront King Arthur over his lies, Hook was nearly attacked by was saved by Emma's sudden appearance. Hook apologized to Emma for breaking off their relationship, stating he does still love her, but again wanted answers and finally Emma revealed to him that the reason why she was doing everything was for him. Taking action, Hook decided it was finally time to know the full story of what happened between them.
Hook with the other Dark Ones
Hook went off searching for Emma but was unable to find her. It wasn't until he put himself in danger, by jumping off the roof of the Storybrooke Library, did Emma finally reappear to him. Hook assured Emma that whatever she did in Camelot he already forgave her and finally seemed to have convinced her to tell him the truth. However, he was taken prisoner along with Zelena, where Emma finally revealed parts of her plan to destroy Dark magic, by putting it all into Zelena and destroy her along with the Darkness. Hook and Zelena worked together to escape, but Hook stayed behind to search for the squid ink to stop Emma for good. He eventually found the ink and used it on Emma and demanded that she finally tell him the truth. Zelena then reappeared to them, where she agreed with Hook about wanting answers and found a way to get them. Zelena attacked Hook with a knife, but much to his surprised, he was not killed. Zelena then finally gave Hook what he desired, by revealing she had acquired the dreamcatcher that contained his memories from Camelot.
Having finally learned the truth and feeling utterly betrayed that Emma did that to him, Hook once again embraced the Darkness.
Seeking revenge in everything that had happened, Hook had resurrected Nimue and all the previous Dark Ones and attempted to send Emma and her family to the Underworld. However, at the last second Hook changed his mind and instead absorbs all the previous Dark Ones into Excalibur and told Emma to kill him, thus destroying the Darkness for good. Although Emma didn't want to go through with it, both herself and Hook saw there was no other way and after sharing one last kiss and declaring their love, Emma did as Hook requested and killed him. With the Darkness gone, Emma was restored to normal and Hook's wound from Excalibur returned, where Hook died in Emma's arms, as the curse broke.
After the Third Curse[]

After Killian's death and the curse now broken, his soul travelled to the Underworld as Emma was absolutely heartbroken over losing her soul mate. Emma suddenly sensed the presence of the Dark One's Dagger and learnt that Gold had become the Dark One again and that Killian hadn't actually destroyed the darkness as he thought. Believing that Hook's death was unfair, Emma and her family travelled to the Underworld to rescue Hook. When they arrived, the family learnt that Hook had a grave and from help from Gold, Emma was given a potion that will allow her to communicate with Hook. However, the vision is not clear and Hook was shown to be in a bad state. Emma worried that Hook was unaware that she was there to save him, but Mary Margret assured her that they will find Killian.
While trapped in a prison with Megara, Hook lets her go free to inform Emma about his state and where he is, just as Cerberus comes nearer, Megara meets Emma and Regina and tells them where Hook is. Following Megara and Hercules' departure from the underworld, Hades confronts Hook about setting Megara free and tortures him. Meanwhile, Emma and Gold use his ex-wife, Milah,'s dead aura to enter Hades' domain to rescue Hook. Emma enters the room where Hook is being dangled to slowly fall into the river of lost souls. Emma rescues her boyfriend, who tells her she should have let him go. Emma and Killian embrace before returning to the boat, where they are informed that Milah was thrown into the river. Emma tells Hook that Milah helped her get to him and they all return to the underworld apartment. Emma tells Hook that she plans on her heart being split so they can share one heart, just like her parents, so he can be resurrected, but it backfires as Hades has put a block on Emma's heart. Hook then reveals to the family that he was forced by Hades to write 3 names on gravestones to make sure three people stay in the Underworld, as revenge for helping Hercules, Megara and Regina's father, Prince Henry Mills, leave the domain.

After returning to the apartment, Emma heals Hook's wounds and he tells her about giving into the darkness out of love, before plumeting head-first for revenge, not yet having forgiven himself. Killian is reunited with his late brother Liam Jones, who dislikes Emma and believes he too should move on, although Hook realises Emma was right about Liam lying as he tore out the pages for Hades and that he lied about making a deal with Hades back when Killian and Liam survived a horendious storm that killed their crew mates. The deceased crew members almost kill Killian and Liam, but Liam sacrifices himself by falling into the firery water, but is revealed to be okay when he is able to travel to Mount Olympus upon forgiving himself and that Killian has forgiven him.

Killian decides to stay in the underworld after he and Emma are declared each other true love, and she is struggling to grieve him. While in the Underworld, Hook works with King Arthur, who was just killed by Hades, to find the missing storybrooke pages that reveal how Hades can be destroyed. While Emma is back in Storybrooke, Killian adds the missing pages, revealing Hades can be killed by the Olympian Crystal, which Zelena uses on him after he kills Regina's soul mate, Robin Hood. After Hades' defeat, Killian is allowed to move on and walks into the white light, where he is greeted by the Greek God Zeus, Hades' younger brother. As thanks for defeating Hades, Zeus resurrects Hook and he is reunited with Emma. Following their reunion, Hook learns that Robin died and decides to stay outside of Granny's during the wake so that Emma can explain, but Hook runs in after hearing a loud sound, fearing Emma is in danger.
Following these events, Hook, Snow, David and Zelena are accidentally sent through a portal to the "Land of Untold Stories", where they are put in a cage as prisoners until Dr. Jekyll saves them, who is later revealed to be from a fairytale about Mr. Hyde. Everyone tries to find their way back home until Henry convinces New Yorkers to make a wish, which reunites Hook with Emma and the rest of their family, along with Jeykll who Snow and David promise to bring back to Storybrooke.
Upon Hook's return, Emma tells him she loves him and while they are having some private time together, they are interrupted when a ship from the Land of Untold Stories arrives along with Mr. Hyde. While this is going on, Emma starts having visions of her future where she dies, but keeps it from Killian and her parents, as Hook, Emma and Henry help Ashley with her step-sisters Emma asks Killian to move in with her which he accepts and allows Belle to stay on the Jolly Roger as she has awakened from her sleeping curse and is currently not with Rumplestiltskin.
Killian moves in with Emma and is by her side when Regina's evil counterpart, the Evil Queen, is after Snow and David's shared heart. Weeks after Snow and David are put under a special sleeping cure - where one sleeps while the other is awake - Killian has worked up the courage to propose to Emma but wants her father's blessing first. He is however worried that David still sees him as a pirate and the way he used to be. After getting advice from Archie, Killian learns that David is being haunted by the mystery of his father, Robert's death so Killian offers to help him, to the point where he prevents David from killing King George as revenge. Once David has accepted his father's death, Killian asks his permission to marry Emma, which he happily gives. However, Killian suddenly realises that he was the one who killed Emma's grandfather and keeps it a secret from her and David.
Not long after, Emma finds the engagement ring and Killian proposes to her, but is struggling with his secret. Emma learns of Killian's secret after witnessing him using a dreamcatcher that restores his memory of the event. Angry at Killian, Emma returns the ring and he leaves Storybrooke on an old friend, Nemo's submarine, where he learns Henry followed him. While this is happening, Emma tells David that Hook killed his father, and Emma and Hook's relationship is strained. Killian helps Henry leave despite Henry's outburst that Hook is not part of the family. When Hook is in trouble, Henry rescues him and comments that he does consider Killian as his family. However, Killian eventually finds himself in Agrabah and contacts Emma to inform her that he is trying to get home to her.

Killian comes across Black Beard and offers him his ship for magical beans that can open a portal. Black Beard agrees and uses the portal, but they find themselves in Neverland, surrounded by some of the Lost Boys who did not want to leave following Peter Pan's death. Hook is then knocked out by Tiger Lilly who eventually agrees to help him after learning he fell in love with the Savior. However, Killian is captured until Emma is able to open a portal in the form of a door, which brings them back home. Despite not being fully recovered, Killian proposes to Emma properly this time, who accepts. When Regina figures out a way to break David and Snow's joint curse, everyone in town drinks some of the curse, which awakens the prince and princess. When everyone else is awake, Killian learns that David knows his secret and is forgiven, as David comments that his father's death was a long time ago and that Hook is now a changed man.
Before and During the Fourth Curse[]

Hook and Emma are having some private time when they are interrupted by Snow's arrival at their home, who is excited about the wedding planning especially since missed most of Emma's life. Killian suggests getting married on the Jolly Roger, but the family decides against this after Henry mentions it might not be a good idea, saying that the guests may get sea sick, seeing his point, Killian agrees. He does ask Henry to be his best man and keep the rings safe which Henry accepts. Staying old fashioned Hook spends the night before the wedding somewhere else as it is bad luck to see the bride the night before. Meanwhile, the Black Fairy's curse is coming on the same day Emma and Hook are due to be married. The two do get married, and they celebrate together with the town Emma even tells him this is a happy beginning for them, but the curse comes just as they have finished the ceremony. While Killian asks where they're going, Emma assures him they're going to win no matter where they go, the two embrace as the curse takes them.
When the curse is cast, Killian and the fairytale characters are sent back to the Enchanted Forest while Emma is given fake memories that make her believe she is living in a mental hospital. Henry tries to get Emma to remember her life in Storybrooke, while Killian and the Charmings want to find their way home. Killian and David decide to climb the beanstalk that Hook climbed with Emma years earlier, to find a magical bean that could send everyone home to Emma. However, the realms start to disappear because the Black Fairy/Fiona is using the curse to make sure Emma loses hope in fairytales and to lose her belief. While the Evil Queen tries to save the realms, Henry is able to convince Emma that she married her true love, Captain Hook and her memories are restored as the curse is broken.
After the Fourth Curse[]
Hook and the fairytale characters return to Storybooke after the curse is broken and he is reunited with Emma. Gideon, Rumple and Belle's son from another realm, battles Emma on the main streets for the final battle and Emma allows him to kill her as everyone watches in shock. However, Henry is able to revive his birth-mother with a true loves kiss and Killian embraces his wife. Following the final battle, the heroes celebrate with a meal before Killian and Emma leave for their honeymoon and he is revealed to be her new deputy in the Storybrooke police force.
A few years into their marriage, Killian and Emma learn that Henry plans to leave home and its revealed that Killian and Emma are struggling to start a family. Emma becomes worried for Henry as he wants to leave as she is sad she missed so much of his upbringing. Killian comforts his wife by giving her a message in a bottle that Henry can use as a way to reach them if he is in trouble no matter where he is.

A few years later, Hook and Regina are contacted by a grown up Henry, who has been captured by Lady Tramaine, and they enter through a portal to save him. Killian unties Henry who embraces his father, and asks where Emma is. Killian lies to his step-son saying Emma is back in Storybrooke fighting dragons when she is actually just resting as she and Killian are keeping the real reason, a secret. While wondering this realm, Killian is confronted by his wish realm counterpart, who is older than him. The two fight and Killian is replaced by wish-Hook, who poses as him by having a potion that makes him look younger. While Killian is tied up, Wish-Hook learns that Emma is pregnant when she visits Henry to tell him herself. Wish-Hook starts to feel guilty and returns to the docs where Storybrooke-Killian has set himself free and stabs his wish-realm self. However, Killian learns that this other version of him came back to set him free and tells him that he was looking for his daughter. Killian starts to feel sorry for his alternate self and tries to calm him through his pain, when Emma arrives and is shocked to find another man who looks identical to her huband. Killian begs Emma to heal this other version of himself, but she is worried that her magic does not work in this realm. However, Emma is able to heal wish-Hook who thanks her.
Killian, Emma and Wish-Hook return to the forest where they are about to depart. Emma has a heart-to-heart with her grown up son and asks him if he wants to return home. Henry tells Emma he does, but feels the need to find his own happy ending by travelling the realms. After Emma suggests that Henry teams up with the wish-realm Killian, she and her Killian return to Storybrooke where she gives birth to their child months later.
After the Sixth Curse[]

After Regina unites all the realms, providing easy access to and from one land to another, Killian and Emma arrive late to her coronation at the Royal Castle, with their new daughter named Hope. The family watch on as Snow White crowns Regina as the Good Queen and the ruler of the newly created United Realms. Killian and Emma congratulate Regina as he calls her "Your Majistey", who gives a speech about hope and second chances. Killian and Emma watch on as she cradles their daughter.

- Killian and Liam were born in the 19th century.[1]
- This version of Captain Hook is loosely based off of Jack Sparrow, the protagonist of the Pirates of the Carabbean franchise. They are both womensizers, who love rum and treasure.
- When Killian first arrives in Storybrooke, he is shown from behind, standing on a yard while holding on to it with his left appendage, and looking at the town while the camera zooms in on him. The camera then zooms in on his face as his hair is blowing in the wind. Hook then grabs a rope that was next to the mast, hangs on to it and jumps to the deck below. This is exactly the same as Captain Jack Sparrow's introduction in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- Hook has a tattoo with Milah's name on his right wrist. It shows the Dark One Dagger going through a heart, as shown "Tallahassee"
- Hook understands Greek, which he learned in the Royal Navy. When he and Emma find the true love scale, he translates the Greek inscription with ease, as seen in "Firebird".
- Hook has managed to outrun a curse more than once:
- He avoided the first curse due to Cora's protection spell and was frozen in time for twenty-eight years, seen in "Queen of Hearts".
- When the second curse was cast, he immediately drove his ship out of the curse’s reach, which is shown in "There's No Place Like Home".

- Due to the Black Fairy's intentions, Hook, along with the heroes except Emma Swan, did not get cursed but was only transported back to the Enchanted Forest, seen in "The Final Battle Part 1"

- Like Regina Mills as the Evil Queen, Killian Jones is the first incarnation of Captain Hook to eventually turn good after previously being shown as a villain in other media.
- When Killian and Emma travelled back in time, he used the alias Prince Charles, which was a reference to the member of the British royal family, King Charles, who was a prince and the next in line for the throne when the episode and series aired.

- Not counting his wish realm counterpart, who shares the name Killian, this variant of Captain Hook is the only one whose first name is not James. Hook's name was likely changed in order not to confuse people with Prince Charming's twin brother, who is named James.
- This variation of Captain Hook is the first to have formerly been a villain, but later became a hero.
- Unlike his story book counterpart where Peter Pan cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile here his hand was taken by Rumplestiltskin as revenge for taking his wife:
- However he does refer to Rumplestiltskin as a Crocodile and when attacking him would make clock references.
- "Good Form" reveals that Killian was very much against drinking rum while being part of the royal navy as he described it as being "bad form". He changed drastically after the death of his brother, taking his position as captain, and became known as a pirate.
- The episode "Poor Unfortunate Soul" implies that Killian was the one who killed Ursula's mother (mirroring the death of Ariel's mother in The Little Mermaid).
- This version of Captain Hook does not lose his hand to Peter Pan, but instead to Rumplestiltskin but he still says that a crocodile took it.
- Killian is very old fashioned when it comes to traditions, established in "Murder Most Foul" when he insists asking for David's blessing to propose to Emma, or in "The Black Fairy", when he believes the superstition of it being bad luck for the groom to see the bride the night before the wedding. Killian backs this up in "Murder Most Foul" by saying that he is over 200 years old, therefore it is what he knows.
